http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/postcurse1.html OCTOBER 17--It's not exactly "Dewey Defeats Truman," but the New York Post made a colossal error today on its editorial page. The paper somehow printed an editorial bemoaning last night's Yankees loss to the Boston Red Sox, noting that the "Curse of the Bambino boomeranged this year" and that the Bronx Bombers "couldn't get the job done at home." http://www.thesmokinggun.com/graphics/art3/postcurse1.gif I bought a paper at lunch. Sure enough. There it is. Amazing.
Not to completely excuse them, but if the Post is like most newspapers, there is an earlier deadline for the op-ed page than for news and sports. More than likely they had an editorial about the Yankees winning ready, but a decision probably had to have been made before the eighth-inning rally, which took place after 11 p.m. EDT and things probably having to be finalized on the layout. If the game was still going on, maybe they should have had something completely different run in that spot instead. Instead a lot of their readers have seen that and thought, "What the f*%#?"
Apparently the Associated Press caught the Post gaffe too... http://www.boston.com/dailynews/290/sports/NY_Post_prints_editorial_sayin:.shtml I was right about there being a "Yankees win" editorial just in case, but a bit wrong about the specific circumstances. Anyway it just validates my belief that the Daily News is king of the New York tabs.
"Struck the wrong button" Sure, pal. I got a button for ya. Right here. If there was a "Yankees win" version, where is it? Wouldn't it be on the online version of today's paper? Today's Post printed three editorials: * The St George Tragedy (which also appears on line) * Giff's 'Gift' to Gotham (which also appears on line) * A Curse of Their Own (which has been replaced on line not by a "Yankees win" version, but by a piece on Rodney King) I'll check the evening edition but I'll only believe it if I see it. This should make a great ad campaign for the Daily News though.
I would have thought that this would only affect the places that get the first edition of the paper (upstate, the Monday Post sometimes doesn't even have scores of the 4pm NFL games), but if people in NYC were seeing it, then it was a bit more of a goof than I thought.
Speaking of the Daily News... they don't miss a beat to crow about their rival's misstep. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/breaking_news/story/127847p-114400c.html Sure it was picked up off Bloomberg News, but it features prominently on the News' website.
