More details now on who is currently in the developmental draft (and criteria for being in and how it might change).

Of course we have Brian Ching (who Steve Goff tapped to be chosen first, Connolly says the same and SJ is taking with them to Spain for their tournament). Seems like that is what is going to happen (unless someone else joins we don't know about).

You also have Ian Joy (who was ineligible b/c he didn't pass his physical for the superdraft). Young american who played in the 3rd division in England.

The rest of the list so far (according to Connelly)...
"Former Werder Bremen defender Phil Sayler, who has trained with D.C. United and the Dallas Burn this winter, isn’t on the supplemental list. Same goes for McKinley Tennyson, the former UCLA star who had stints with both Columbus and L.A., who has been with San Jose throughout their preseason training camp before not getting a spot on their trip to Spain. Both players could be picked up as discovery players if they are not requested by a team, and therefore added to the supplemental list. Names on the supplemental list right now that you may know: Olstykke (Denmark) forward Derk Droze, former Revs midfielder Leighton O’Brien and Canadian goalkeeper Pat Onstad, who was recently on the roster for the friendly against the U.S. last month in Fort Lauderdale."

Remember, this list can be added to (and I wouldn't be shocked if we saw one or two more names). I thought there were two U20 players working out with Dallas who had signed with MLS. I can't claim to have seen most of these guys play (or any of them play recently for that matter). Given that caveat, getting Devin Barclay (who is cap exempt) seems like quite the steal--is there anyone on this list you'd rather have over Barclay?

    Thanks for the info.

Sorry for my ignorance, but it there going to be a supplemental draft? If so when? Does it differ from this developmental draft?

MLS does not post this information so it is a bit tad confusing.

No, Joe is I believe talking about the supplemental draft which is to be held around the end of the month in a house on Burlington Place, between 45th and 46th, NW. Noonish. Reports on the draft will appear in dribs and drabs before the end of the MLS season.

Actually Ursula, I think you have the draft confused with what's on tap!

And Jose, my understanding is that there will be a supplemental draft on Feb. 28. The list of players currently available (and more may be added) has been distributed to coaches. I heard there are 11 on the list at present. Basically, the supplemental draft is ONLY for players currently under contract to MLS. Thus, no Johnny Walker.

Also, there should be a waiver draft at some point. And there will also be a weighted lottery for Joey Digiamarino.

Egg on Yallops face...the rumor now is that Yallop has said he wants Pat Onstad (who's name is publicly listed as being on the supplemental list). He was a GK for Rochester last year, reserve for Canada (and was with Yallop when both were CNT members). Yallop has also publicly said he wants him. Except....Rochester's GM filed (or is threatening to file) tampering charges against Yallop/MLS. He says that Rochester has a 2 year contract with Onstad, the 2nd year is for 2003, that he can't sign with MLS, that MLS must pay a transfer fee for Onstad if they want him.

The rumors of who else is on the list (in addition to what I posted from Connelly)...not very impressive in the least! It gets a little better if guys who have been renounced (Zarco, Balboa) are included--but I think they'll be part of a waiver draft (especially since they aren't under contract to MLS in most cases--and the supplemental draft "supplements" the superdraft b/c the superdraft contains either college grads or rookies who have signed with MLS).

Wow. Hadn't seen that gaffe by Yallop. This is one bad offseason for the Quakes.

I agree that so far this supplemental draft is just that- suppllemental to most teams' needs.
