    From Soccer America's MLS Confidential:

    4. DWAYNE'S DILEMMA: Quakes forward Dwayne DeRosario is training in Florida with the Canadian national team in preparation for its game against the U.S. Jan. 18. He could be headed to England -- two clubs are reportedly interested -- on a three-month loan, but the loan could hinge on the CONCACAF Champions' Cup first-round dates which are scheduled to be released Friday.

San Jose is reluctant to allow DeRosario to leave until the dates are known for the initial phase of the 16-team tournament that will be played on a two-leg knockout basis. The dates initially proposed, Feb. 26 and March 10, drew criticism from several teams.

Columbus allowed Brian McBride to go on loan until the end of March partially on the assumption CONCACAF would schedule Champions Cup games for the four MLS participants in April. The Crew, Quakes, Revs and Galaxy are competing in the tournament that also includes four Mexican teams.

DeRosario qualifies for an British work permit on the 75-percent benchmark for international caps and impressed a few folks in Britain when he played for Canada against Scotland in a 3-1 defeat Oct. 15. DeRosario scored Canada's only goal on a penalty kick.

    5. MORE QUAKES: Two other San Jose players are in contract talks that could be affected by interest from overseas.

Defender Wade Barrett and keeper Joe Cannon are out of contract and have yet to agree on new deals. Barrett has been offered a trial by Danish club AGF Aarhus and he might be asked to leave the U.S. national team training camp in Florida prior to the game against Canada. Cannon, the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year last season, is also training with the U.S. team and is waiting for possible offers to go on trial. He has gone to Europe several times on training stints."

"There is certainly interest in both players abroad," said agent Ron Waxman, who confirmed Aarhus had offered Barrett a trial.

Not neccessarily. If I was just beginning to get looked at closely by the national team, I wouldn't leave early for a trial.

Actually, the big news for me is this part:

Does this mean that we might be able to see the Quakes in a real game as soon as seven weeks from now? Sweet!

This may seem like a no-brainer but if DeRo goes on loan and impresses enough to bring an offer, might this mean Graz will be back in SJ?

Apologies. I'm a day behind on the news. I just saw where Graziani is gone for the season. Is there any chance DeRo won't play for SJ this season? (Assuming serious Euro interest)Losing Ariel & DeRo would leave Landon and...Barclay.

Bad news: half of our team is gone or going (Lucci, DeRo, Graz, Cannon, Barrett) [IMG]

Good news: Yallop is apparently interested in kicking some a$$ in the Champion's Cup. :)

looks like both Cannon and Barrett are skipping out of the Nats training camp to go on trial in Europe. Good for them, good for Quakes wannabees (more openings), bad for our shot at MLS Cup '03

Of the three, I'm most concerned about Barrett. A good left back is hard to find and he has been in good form for over a year. At 26, it's the right time for him to move.

Cannon has more reason to stay unless the money and team are just right. Otherwise, he would be wasting any chances of playing for the USMNT.

DeRo is for a loan. With the uncertainity in our schedule, it's doubtful that it will fall in place.

    Eating my words.

But come on! Cannon at Feyenoord? He'd have to be backup, right? I mean. They won the UEFA Cup last year, right? Cannon isn't there! No disrespect to the guy.

Could we get a translation for the Cannon article on the Feyenoord website?

Would not happen, at least not directly, since the Quakes relinquished their rights to Graziani to the league, who in turn sent him on loan to Barcelona in Ecuador.

    So I would say not.

Chances are good now, IMO, that the Quakes will be looking for strikers as their top draft priority, to increase their striking depth... no doubt in my mind about that (although this is nothing more than an educated hunch).

    Cheers,
    William

    Hi Guys,

I am from the Netherlands and a supporter of Feyenoord Rotterdam.
Indeed Cannon is here at Feyenoord and joined the team today who is preparing for the second half of the season.
It is the winterbreak right now.
The team is on Gran Canaria and Cannon will be tested during the The Las Palomas tournament.
Cannon is the second goalkeeper from the States who is tested.Tim Howard from NJ MetroStars was here back in Oktober I think. He didn't get a contract but I am sure Feyenoord is still following him.
When Feyenoord is back in The Netherlands a decision will be made if Cannon gets a contract or not.

Feyenoord is scouting on the US market for players while talented goalkeepers here are too young and unexperienced and it would take too much time and effort to train them for the first squad.
This season Feyenoord had 4 goalkeepers injured and the fifth goalkeeper only 17 years old defended the goal.
If Feyenoord contract Cannon, he might as well play for Excelsior Rotterdam, Feyenoord's affiliated soccerclub also playing in the Dutch premier league.

You can also check out www.feyenoord.com
It is not as updated as Feyenoord.nl but at least it is in English. The Cannon item cannot be found there unfortunately.
I will keep you posted if there is any news.

Greetings from Western Europe, The Netherlands.

You could be right. We already lost our leading goal scorer in Graziani, which is bad enough, but if we lose Cannon and Barrett to the European clubs we will be truly screwed. That would leave us with Robinson,a slow Agoos and a fragile Dayak in front of "wrong way" Conway and Donovan and DeRo up front. This situation does not inspire confidence in me or others i'm sure. The fact that our team has not made any moves, other than to free up some salary cap room by letting our best offensive player go, has me second guessing the head office as to their sanity. I would hate to think that i just spent good money to renew my season tickets just to watch a team in a rebuilding year. That would suck as much as mike seegrove's life.
