VS. FCZ Perspective Depending on the result against Thun, FC Zurich might still have a shot at the Uefa Cup. Even if they don't, I'm sure FCZ is highly motivated for this one. They would love nothing more than to ruin the championship for their city rivals. GC Perspective A win would bring GC very close to the championship. They could seal the title in the very next game at home against lowly Wil. A loss could be devastating, as it almost certainly would bring Basel back into the race.
Well, they did beat Thun 2:1 (although just barely). They will definitely be motivated for this one. History is against FC Zurich in this match. FCZ hasn't beaten Grasshoppers at home in 19 years.
Re: Re: Derby: FC Zürich vs. Grasshoppers, 5/21 [R] That is an insane amout of matches not to have beaten a team. Looks like GCZ gets two games in a row against desperate competition. FCZ will do just as FCB did, play as if there was nothing to loose. If they have any hope of a UEFA Cup spot they have to get something from this game. Three points is almost essential. But that bring in the further question. If FCZ does win, that could leave Basel level with GCZ on points, if Basel were to win the championship, there would be one less spot for FCZ to make the UEFA Cup. That makes things a little more testy for FCZ, but they are problaty not thinking about that, just win, win, win.
That's what I'm afraid of. 19 years is a very long time, and that streak is just begging to be broken. I went to first derby of the season at the Letzigrund this past summer, and FCZ nearly won that one (GC staged a late comeback to win 2:1). FCZ has absolutely nothing to loose, while GC has the championship on the line. I found this on FCZ's website:
I guess that picutre tells us the true feeling of the FCZ supporters. It is amazing that you found that I FCZ official website. Usually things like that are on the unofficial ones. Wow they really do want to beat GCZ. What does "mithwoch" mean? It is on the card.
Well this one is about to start. I will listen to it on Radio Z, at least until the Uefa Cup final starts. (It sure sucks to put up with the pop music in between, especially for a metal head like me)
Nevermind Current scores: HT Wil 1 - 1 Neuchatel Xamax HT Young Boys Bern 1 - 1 Servette 15' Basel 1 - 0 Thun 15' Zurich 0 - 0 Grasshoppers
Re: RE: Derby: FC Zürich vs. Grasshoppers, 5/21 [R] The Basel result has a direct impact on the GCZ game. It was Hakin Yakin in the 3rd minute. I will go on posting on the other thread. The scores and updates.
It is, but like Rob said. The Championship could be decided today if GC wins and Basel loses... 23' GC dominating so far. Nunez with a big chance.
It is not like any of us could be watching the games. I understand the necessity for keeping scores out of indivudual gme threads when the league is accessable on TV, but I don't think that applies in this case.
Crap! 1:1 (35' Tarone) Ok. Time for me to watch the Uefa Cup final, but I will def. keep an eye on the matchtracker.
It was a hard fought game with 2 shots that hit the post (43' Petric & 78' Iodice). Eduardo had a huge chance to win the game in injury time... *sigh* Is the season over yet? I can't take this suspense anymore.
The picture shows empty seats, can that be true at this match? I think that a tie was a good result for GCZ. Having not seen the match, and with FCZ being so motivated, one point is better than none.
The attendance was 15,500 - not quite a sellout, but pretty full. With more on the line for FCZ, it probably would've sold out. I'm sure some FCZ fans stayed at home, in fear that they would have to witness the crowning of GC as champion in their own stadium
I was in Thun all week but did catch most of this match on TV. FCZ played their hearts out and took the game to GC very well. Too bad they could not play like that every week. The FCZ goal was a nice hard shot but was deflected off a defender...bad luck. Both sides managed to hit the woodwork later in what was a faily even matched game. Not having Cabanas seemed to hurt and all of GC looked a little lethargic after last week's emotional game against FCB. I hate to say it but this week they do not look like a team hungry for the championship. Now they need to get it done against FC Wil. I just hope they don't choke like they have a few other times this year.
Thanks for the match summary Chris. Yeah, FCZ can play outstanding one day, then play like a NLB team the next week. Good thing GC will have Cabanas back for the last game against Young Boys.
