Depth at the wings?

Discussion in 'USA Men: News & Analysis' started by passtheblizz, Nov 2, 2002.

  1. Personally I feel that this has been a weak area for us over the years. I would rate our current depth as such:

    Right:
    Sanneh
    Stewart
    Ralston
    Jones
    Mastroeini(maybe!)
    Thorrington
    West
    Donovan
    Cherundolo
    Quaranta
    Convey
    Klein
    Hedjuk

    Left:
    JOB
    Stewart
    DMB
    Convey
    Lewis
    Kamler
    Gray

Anyone I missed? Some of these guys have no chance in 2006.

What about DC United's Favorite Son, Bennie Olsen?

The new 'Can't do wrong kid of BigSoccer'. (nothing a couple of games won't change).

(not to be confused of course with Philadelphia's Favorite Son: S.D. "Special Delivery Jones.")

i think your depth chart needs a little tinkering so here's my stab at it...excluding players who will never play again-stewart...will never play midfield again-sanneh...or wing again-donovan

    right-wing
    olsen
    klein
    west
    thorington

    left-wing
    beasley
    lewis
    convey

in a pinch i believe o'brien will play some left wing for us in the future and reyna may do the same for the right wing...and then there's heydude...he may play there at some time in the future

  4. I knew I forgot someone, and I think that Bruce will obviously give Olsen, a DC player, more than a fair look... I was purposefully including a lot of extra players in the charts, and some personal preference as well. Sanneh is a great wing player when he has a good defender behind him. Bruce hamstringed him on the Nats when he played him there recently(pre-WC), but Sanneh can go forward really well and has a good cross. He is also a finisher, straight up. I don't know why he never played offense for the Nats. In college he was an awesome goal-scorer, and for the Rampage too. In the WC he was our best offense vs. Germany, and remember his little cross to McBride vs. Portugal?

I never want to see Hedjuk play for the Nats again, and Reyna will not be very good hoofing it up and down the sideline, IMO.

I am very impressed with Cobi Jones. He is no longer a one move player. He improved quite a bit. He is playing best soccer of his career and probably the best right winger we have at this point. He has many moves and very tricky in the wings. He usually requires double team or make first player miss. I wouldn't rule somebody out just because of age. He is going to be old, but a lot of players still got games at age 36.

I would also include Brad Davis for the left wing. He certainly has a future.

talk about your weak links on the Rightwing, think Spain would swap Joaquin for say Bobby Convey? In all seriousness I think we'll see Santino quaranta manning the righmidfield spot. No one else inspires much confidence.
