Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. Exactly. As someone stated in the comments below the article, sex sells better than everything. I just really don't like the fact that a soccer fans in the media has decided to write such a story. We get enough stories like this from the people who hate soccer. He makes it appear that MLS overpaid for Beckham and that they should have gotten the players who are better than him on the field. But he fails to point out that Beckham is costing MLS half of what the top players in the world are getting from their clubs right now. His problem seems to lie with the advertisers that thow money at Beckham but his story takes it out on MLS. Unfair but sadly not unexpected.
Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. sex sells better than NBA, NFL, NHL as well.
Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. LIES!!! I refuse to believe this. Or do I...
Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. What's shocking is that he was able to pull away from his computer porn long enough to find time to write the article.
Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. Sex sells better than Soccer all over the world... it's not just the U.S.
Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. Relax, people. Do you know what a hook is? The writer is using the "Sex sells better than soccer in America" line as a hook to draw in unsuspecting non-soccer types to read the story that they otherwise wouldn't read.
I'm not sure whether this guy is really a soccer fan, but he strikes me as pretty clueless. He states that Kroenke would have been smart to invest in "higher salaries" for Convey, Dempsey, and Beasley (to keep them at home) rather than his share in Arsenal. But what he apparently doesn't realize is that there is more than just salary that draws those players to Europe. Clint would have headed to England for less than he could've made here, I'm convinced. It's not simply the salary, it's the level of the league as well. Anyone that claims to write about soccer should realized that, but this guy apparently does not.
Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. This from the coach that traded FOR Clint Mathis. FOR Jovan kirovski and traded away Joe Cannon. Forgive me if I don't tattoo your player evaluation skills on my back. And again, what is your lifetime coaching record? And I saw you game last night coach. Way to raise the game for a national prime time audience. But its true. Beckham is not being signed ONLY for his goal scoring skills. And despite the fact that he is playing well in one of the Top 3 leagues in the world for one of the Top 5 teams in the world, he is also being signed for his charisma, his leadership, the fact that he actually has a personality in a league blander than white bread not to mention he has not been arrested for spousal abuse, weapons charges, assault or holding dog-fights on his property. In a league where we play 6 months to eliminate 5 out of 13 teams - Beckham will be an interesting addition to the league. And that is what all leagues try to do - add interest to the league. So - again, Clavijo is saying he doesn't want this guy on his team: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yz0Vk0WJQ8 He can be on my team.
Re: Denver Post: Sex sells better than (MLS) soccer in America. The "experts" have all latched on to this line of thinking. I heard friggin Dan Patrick, of all people, opining about how Beckham is not a great player and that what he was is not past him. Does anyone actually watch the games? Does anyone see the drop off in the midfield play of Manchester United, England and Real Madrid when he is removed from the line up? He has always been a tremendously hard worker and great team mate and he will be that in LA. He will also be the best player in the league. On a couple of specific points. Yes, I would take Cristiano Ronaldo right now over Beckham. No, that is not like comparing John Elway to Jake Plummer. But to compare their "fame" is a little ridiculous. How many Americans knew who Beckham was when he was 21 and a starting midfielder with United? Second, Clavijo said there are 30 better players in the world, and he wouldn't have taken Beckham. Considering there are 1000s of professional soccer players and dozens of top leagues, 30 might be about right. Does anyone in MLS currently crack the top 100? That is NOT a knock on MLS. There are roughly 500 rostered players in each top league in the world. Do the math. Our best go over to europe and are solid players, but no one would argue that McBride, Convey, Beasley etc. are in the top 30 players in the world. Hell, McBride "might" qualify as one of the top 30 in his league which is quite an accomplishment. As to Clavijo not taking Beckham, I'll let his record speak for itself. He has had the job for awhile, and he is just now starting to put together a solid, balanced roster. If he doesn't think that Beckham would slide in nicely for Kirovski, then there is mor than a mile that is high in Denver.
umm... salary is by far the biggest factor. Level of the league is a minor consideration. In fact, the chance to play in your homeland easily outweighs the level of the league factor.
What's sex? How do I invest in it? If sells better than soccer, well, we could have just found a gold-mine...
