Allen Hopkins had this to say about Denilson: Brazilian BBQ Texas style? It appears FC Dallas' efforts to sign Brazil's Denilson have stalled. Although the 29-year-old received his P-1 work visa and was set to begin training with the team this week, he has yet to board a plane for Dallas. One source close to the negotiations was "pessimistic" the deal would get done after the delay. Originally, the tipping point for the winger, who erupted on the scene in 1997 with his memorable stepovers that were as smooth as jazz but sharp like scalpels, was Beckham mania. Denilson was visiting FC Dallas and watched the Beckham presentation July 13 and said, "I want to be a part of this." Apparently, his wants and FCD's are too different.
Does anyone have any solid inside info on what the hold up is? Too much money being asked? Playing time? Wanting to try Europe again?
Sounds like Denilson negotiations are still going on. http://www.americansoccerdaily.com/news/denilsontalks.htm
Hmmmm.... Definately keep Richetti, Saragosa and Serioux look like the obvious choices, but one has to wonder, would they just replace Ruiz since he may require DP money next year? Now, the way he's performing this year, that may not be the case, but it makes you wonder.
"Of course, we have spoken with other clubs, but the player prefers to play in Dallas." Ok, let me get this straight... Other clubs are interested, he wants to be in Dallas, his agent wants him in Dallas, every person interested in the MLS wants him to be in Dallas... GET IT DONE FO!!!
Damn, he's gone down in the world, after being one of the bright young things of the '98 WC. Apparently, that's what happens to flair players who never learn to pass.
I still have to wonder if the hold up is FCD's inability to trade Nunez for anything close to his value. To sign Denilson they need a SI spot AND cap space - correct?
Bingo. The Hunts aren't known for throwing it around and I'm sure their dad told them many tales about his own experience with "DP's" (although they weren't called that at the time) and my own feelings on the subject are well known.
as are mine, I suspect. and yet I can't resist commenting. those other clubs are more than welcome to him in my book. I had hoped this conversation was dead...
in no particular order 1) too old 2) too ineffective in recent years 3) we don't need his position/s 4) will put very few additional BIS 5) too expensive
1) maybe not 2) River Plate coaches would say the same about Toja 3) A player of his skill level can play what you need him to save defence 4) you didn't see the Brazilians show up for Paranaense (pretty impressive) 5) he may end up not too expensive
1) there's always a "maybe," but the odds are steeply in my favor 2) when you say it about a young player, there's a good chance he can go somewhere else and prove you wrong. when you say it about a has-been, there's a good chance he's done. 3) if there's a non-dmid midfield position we do need, it's right mid. why buy someone who would be out of position at the spot where we have a hole? Alvarez can play on the right or the left too, and he's a hell of a lot cheaper and a hell of a lot younger. 4) true, he may bring in the SA crowd for a year or two. that point I will grant. but I don't believe that DPs are the best or only way to do that. 5) what you would define as "too expensive" and what I would define as "too expensive" and what HSG would define as "too expensive" may all be different things.
If HSG pays him to play then he's not expensive. Maybe he sees this as his shot at the limelight and since he's already made his mint he is ready to play.
I don't know what this means. did rikker haxx0r your account? this seems like circular logic. since he was already famous on the world stage, now he's finally ready to get down to business?
One would think, although it's impossible to know, that if he was going to go somewhere just to play for the love of the game, he would stay in Brazil and play there. Just sayin'.
As you might have noticed, Alvarez plays on the right on this team as it is, so Denilson would not be out of position or stepping on toes if he were on the left (maybe Oduro's toes, but arguing for Oduro over Denilson ... really?). Ultimately, the midfield position we (and most of the world) are starved for is the attacking center mid, the Ronaldinho, the Riquelme ... the Blanco, if you will. Toja is sufficient for the time being, but he is not consistently creating plays or chances for the other attackers (leads the team in goals, 0 assists). It may be that, if Dax has usurped Saragosa's role, then Dax and Toja should be swapped. I'm looking anxiously to the Columbus game for a better view of this. I also don't think we need midfielders but rather right-sided defenders. For me, it's whatever on Denilson.
whatever the case in the middle, there is a lot of flexibility there and we are doing a good job as it is. but my point was that IF we were to get a midfielder, I'd want it to be a right-footed dead-ball specialist, not a left-sided goalscorer. denilson doesn't seem to address our needs, he seems to simply augment our strongest area. I agree with you that where we have a big hole is right back, and that is definitely not where you want to use a DP slot.
Can AWal play right back? He's got great upside on the LB but can he move over? I'd still like us to run a 4-3-3. AWal next to Drew on the right eventually. As far as Denilson goes you bring him in if he's going to be the best player on the team. If he's not going to be so good that he can't bump any attacking player out of their position then don't do the deal. I guess that would be my standard. A former Brazilian WC player should be that kind of a player.
