According to this SA article on Mac's acl tear, Deliah Arrington also tore hers in the Power-Charge match on Saturday. http://www.socceramerica.com/article.asp?Art_ID=562133242 "Philadelphia rookie Deliah Arrington also suffered a torn ACL tear, ending her season, during the Charge's 2-1 win Saturday at New York. Arrington also collapsed while stretching for a ball; as with MacMillan's injury (and Carolina playmaker Hege Riise's ACL tear last month), there was no contact with an opposing player." What a huge shame. Arrington has looked really impressive in her few WUSA matches. She's probably the fastest player I've seen this year. Condolences to the Charge, and all wishes to Deliah for a speedy and thorough recovery.
well, seems like the team who gets to the end of the season healthy will be the last team standing... I wonder if the charge will pursue a new roster player??? I guess it all depends on the health of Scasna... if Scasna is out much longer, I wonder who gets the call?? would it be Spinelli...?? I assume Maso de Moya gets the call against San jose??
The Charge have put out an official release on Arrington: Arrington Tears ACL; Out for Season I feel really bad about this one. There aren't many up and coming young American strikers in WUSA, and Deliah looked like she had the stuff to make a splash. I truly hope the league sticks around so she can get another shot next year.
Here's the damage control we need to do: 1. Trade or waive Scasna. Now. You know how much Tullock was decimated in the middle of last season by plantar fascitis. Scasna is injury-prone and the time has come to cut our losses here; 2. Bring back Lihong. Now. We're going to get the WWC, barring the second coming. There is no logical reason not to at least try to get her the hell back here. If that doesn't work, then try to get Hoda Lattaf from the French NT. 3. Put Maso de Moya up top. Actually, you have no choice there. Who else is there? Who can you trade for? 4. Get Markovski involved in the mix; maybe he has Nordic contacts who can direct him toward another international. 5. Maybe reevaluate the training methods being used so our players stop going down like flies. I'm sorry, but this is a monumental indictment of the coaching staff's draft-day thinking. McVeigh the jury is still out on, Misaki's playing hurt, and now this. That's three of your first four draft picks, injured or otherwise. We let ourselves get g-damned snookered by Stone who kept feinting in the direction of drafting Arrington enough that we fell right into his trap. We panicked and took Solo, and the midgy ones screwed us good by taking Withers at 5. Solo would have been available at 7; yeah, it's beating a dead horse, but would you rather have had Withers, Orlandos and Solo or whom we eventually wound up taking? Oh, yeah - Withers is now officially in the fold down there and will be in playing shape in no time... Paul
I only agree with a couple of these ideas. The Trina upfront idea is one I've said before. I got two words on a possible forward replacement: Hanna Ljungberg. I know she has been tried before. If not her then her Swedish teammate, Victoria Svensson. Or try Martina Müller. We need someone but I would prefer it not be a foreigner because I don't want to let go of one of them. Now if we find out that Scasna won't be back this season then we can have her in mind(like the Freedom and Gregg) and get another player for the rest of the season. I thought we did fine with our picks. I mean after all, another team picked Susan Bush. "If that doesn't work, then try to get Hoda Lattaf from the French NT' Hoda would be a good choice. She would probably have more goals on the national team were it not for Pichon. That didn't come out right. Sandrine Bretigny is another player to look out for. But I really hope they don't let Pavlina go. I don't know if the Chinese are going to let the players back for the rest of the season. For sure, next season.
San Diego picked Bush and they were on their way until Mac tore her ACL. I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree (respectfully) on the draft. Look at Clemson's Women's College Cup record; from the elite 8 in '99 (Arrington's freshman year) then two sweet 16's after that and a first round exit last November. Withers has that much more of an upside; the Beat fans who are wailing about losing Burt don't realize or know what good they're going to get with Callie. Second, Scasna was banged up just 10 minutes into the 'Nova pre-season game. And just look at how long Tullock had to recover from her PF. Nothing against Scasna, but who's to say she won't be injured again whenever she gets cleared to play? That's why you try to trade her for a draft pick; if not, you waive her. Paul
Injuries are always tough. I say we can put her on reserves. There won't be any compensation like the Power had with the Whalen situation which was before the season anyway.
What about that? Maybe there's a flaw in how the team's been training, what with 2 new assistants. It's just that the injuries are way up from last year..are practices too long? Too short? Not enough emphasis on weight training? It's maddening... Paul
Women suffer from ACL injuries more so than men. There was a whole thing in SA about it. Don't know much about fitness to talk about how they could change training.
Females have a statistically greater likelihood for ACL problems over males. ask Riise and Macmillan and Smith and Arrington and Whalen and a host of others... fitness is NOT related to the chance... I do think Scasna tendonitis has been due to transitioning from BAyern to the Charge... whether it's the adaptation to the turf or over training, her woes are more likely to be due to not listening to the early signs of the tendonitis. charge don't have any more foreign allocations. since burt has been picked up, pichon, burt and maso de moya are the only real forwards, until scasna gets healthy... picking up burt probably means Scasna is not going to be ready for several weeks. sad to see little squirt go, a victim of a lack of forwards... for a player who's role last year was so prominent to being a player who was NO longer asked to play that role...who knows what Krikorian is thinking. Kruze and Misaki are the key players right now... their chances have come and the next two weeks are huge... gotta control midfield possession against sj... and with a weekend of rain being forecast, slippery field conditions will make skilled play more difficult
Tough hearing about Arrington. She has the tools to be an impact player in the WUSA. This could be the season where the FCIII is awarded based upon attrition.
"Women are more vulnerable to this kind of injury than men due to several reasons among them: A smaller femoral notch (Where the ACL passes) and wider hips after puberty resulting a different angle and greater shearing force and from this from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor: Why do female athletes experience more ACL injuries? Research conducted at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor suggests that the increased rate may have to do with a functional muscular imbalance between the quadriceps (the muscle group on the front of the upper leg) and the hamstrings. In this study, the female athletes tended to rely more on the quadriceps muscles to resist forward movement of the tibia on the femur, whereas the male athletes utilized the hamstring muscles more frequently for initial knee stabilization. Additionally, the researchers found that the hamstrings in some female athletes reacted less quickly to forces applied to the upper leg and knee area than those of male athletes. In short, the quadriceps were over-dominant in some female athletes. To adequately stabilize the knee, the two muscle groups need to respond at the right time and in the right order."
