Did a little inquiry into MLS season statistics so far: Team GP GF/GA SJ 6 10/5 MET 6 7/3 CLB 7 11/9 NE 7 10/7 KC 7 13/11 CHI 5 4/6 LA 6 4/7 DC 6 4/6 DAL 5 4/7 COL 5 3/9 Metro has given up 3 goals in 6 matches (.500 GAA). The next best defensive performance has been by San Jose, who have given up 5 goals in 6 matches (.833 GAA). Every other team has given up at least one goal per match played. Now, consider that of the 3 goals allowed so far this year, one was the late-game defensive lapse against Columbus, and another was Timmy's unthinkable flub vs. Colorado, and it becomes clear exactly how much defense is the reason for Metro's success so far. We don't give up good chances to our opponents. Pope is the MVP of the league so far, in my opinion, for his singular contribution has to this team and its success. He has almost single-handedly (with the help of Bradley) brought organization and toughness to what was a mediocre-at-best defense last season.
i couldnt agree more, but he does have a partner in defense who is also playingMVP calibur, and thats Steve Jolley.
True dat... How many of us, MetroStars fan, had been hoping for an organized defense, let alone team, for so many years, huh????? Aren't we happy !
Re: Re: Defense I agree, Pope has been getting much of the recognition while Steve has been quietly doing just as well in the back.
