Well would you look at that, the 2025 MLS Regular Season is at an end. Just like that, before you can say Bob’s you’re Uncle, the offseason is staring you right in the face. RSL has had a lot of chances in the last 9 games to make decision day anticlimactic but in true RSL form decided to make that last game more than interesting. Only 3 wins in the last 9 games and nothing else. RSL has only 4 draws all season. Surprisingly that is not least amount in MLS this season. Charlotte only had two but they have 18 wins compared to 12 for RSL. So what will it look like when the final whistle blows to end the regular season for RSL? Will they be in the playoffs because the went out and grabbed the three points? Will they be in the playoffs because they walk away with a point and Colorado and San Jose end the season with a draw as well and FCD loses? Will they be in the playoffs because all 3, Colorado, RSL, and San Jose all lose and they get in to the last spot with an unremarkable and rather embarrassing 40 points? FCD 41 points on 10 wins 11 draws 12 loses Away to Vancouver RSL 40 points on 12 wins 4 draws 17 loses Away to St. Louis City Colorado 40 points on 11 wins 7 draws 15 loses Home against LAFC San Jose 38 points on 10 wins 8 draws 15 loses Home against Austin The way that this season has gone I would absolutely not stop laughing if all four get boat raced on the last day of the season. So damn weird. So here is my first guess on the line-up Cabral-the only reason that we can even have a conversation about RSL and the playoffs Yedlin, Glad, Vera, Katranis Caliskan, Ojeda Gozo, Diogo, Luna Olatunji if healthy Some questions for sure. Ojeda or Eneli, Cruz or Olatunji? Tough to drop Diogo even though I think he sucks balls but he was, by the lowest bar ever set for a DP, involved in the second half. Is the injury an issue with Olatunji? Pablo seemed to pressure the medical staff to clear him for the game on Saturday. Found that interesting. Eneli played better in the second half but if Ojeda is good to go I can’t see him yanking Caliskan, can you? I was more confident that RSL would get a result and even a win in Seattle but I was punished for that optimism. I am less optimistic heading in to St. Louis so a stellar outing and 3 points? Let’s see what the week holds.
Katranis is out due to yellow card suspension. He was our only player one yellow away from sitting out, so his yellow against Seattle looms large. Junqua in that spot.
let's do something fun and start Ruiz at LB. Also, I think I want to like Cruz, but I'm not sure he is any good... So, yeah, Luna, Diogo, Gozo, and Olatunji up top.
Don’t let St Louis position in the table lead you to believe this is a probable 3 or 1 point game. St Louis have won 3 of their last 4, that lone loss coming to a rampant LAFC. Outside that they beat Austin, Montreal, and San Jose. Not exactly amazing teams, but wins nonetheless
They've got an interim coach trying to get the job full time and a roster full of players that are playing hard to make sure they have a job next season. It won't be easy, but RSL has enough talent to win. I just don't know what team will decide to show up.
You are correct. I could see all 4 of FCD, COL, RSL, and SJ crapping the bed and losing which would be apropos for this season. I don't know what would have anyone believe the Pablo can get these guys ready to go at the whistle on Saturday. They got boat raced early in Seattle and if St. Louis is smart they will do the same thing. Getting up on RSL is the key to beating them considering that they have 3 whole points from a losing position all season. An early goal on the RSL with their best starting lineup out there could be devastating to this club. I wouldn't underestimate St. Louis in the slightest.
Anyone going? I'm crossing my fingers for decent weather. Initial forecast isn't looking so great. How late will they play due to delays? They have to complete the match ASAP, right?
Well there's going to be a fair bit of rain at this point, before and during the match (barring lightning delays). I don't know what the field will look like. I definitely need to bring my rain gear. Boo
Treys podcast leading into this one is the same decision day episode of most years recently outside 2024. Not sure how this guy continues to believe in something when he has so much evidence against it working. that and he bitches about officiating for a good chunk. Rather exhausting
Glad I'm not the only one coming to that conclusion. He is paid to be an optimist (or delusional fan, take your pick). At least he wasn't putting the same episode every week. I think he at least realized he has no content this year.
My bet is we lose but so do the crapids while San Jose only draw Austin. Any takers? also, not sure if we’ve talked about here much: the line to get in on in the East is (at least) 51 points while the line in the west could very well just be 40. wtf
It’s truly amazing the separation between the two tables. If Miami, Philly, or Cincy, were in the west they would have 100 points. lol Vancouver and LAFC might be the best to back in the west and just might be the favorites but don’t count out MLS going all NFL for Messi.
RSL comes away with another magical late goal to tie St Louis 1-1. End on 41 points. Dallas lose at Vancouver. End on 41 points. Colorado get run off the pitch by LAFC. End on 40 points San Jose get a late Chicho goal to beat Austin. End on 41 points. Final regular season standings 8 RSL 41 points 12 wins (win tiebreaker) 9 San Jose 41 points 11 wins (wins tiebreakers against Dallas) 10 Dallas 41 points (only 10 wins on season) 11 Colorado 40 points. RSL to host play in game on 10/22. Field looks like shit after boys state cup finals (2 per night) are played at AFF on 10/20 and 10/21. RSL forgets to show up on Wednesday and get run off the pitch in the play in match. Trey calls the season a success because RSL made the playoffs. Owners decide to run it back for another year and we get to experience the suck for another year.
I think that's a great way to finish the season, but I was thinking the poor result at home would result in wholesale changes.
I would love to see wholesale changes, but I don't expect them. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Pablo's contract expired at the end of the season. I'm hearing rumors from trusted sources that his contract has already been extended, just not announced.
Heard something similar awhile back. Not that it’s done but that it was the plan. I wonder if not making the playoffs might be the deal breaker and why nothing has been announced.
League website suggests 4-2-3-1: Cabral Yedlin Vera Glad Junqua Caliskan Ojeda Gozo Luna Diogo Olutanji Bench: Stajduhar and Kerkvliet; Quinton; Eneli, Ruiz, Wolff, Berea; Agada, Cruz Two goalkeepers is some kind of statement.
Injuries: OUT: Matthew Bell (hamstring) OUT: Javain Brown (knee) OUT: Zac MacMath (shoulder) QUESTIONABLE: Pablo Ruiz (knee) QUESTIONABLE: Mason Stajduhar (knee) Russell and Piol both healthy but not on the bench. I get Piol; he seemed to have burned his chance last week. But Russell would be very nice to have late if needed.
Cruz is behind Diogo now? Also, the evolution of Pablo and his love of some rando like Caliskan… over it
Coming back to this: 2025 has been incredibly underwhelming from Katranis. Only beaten out by the Eneli slide
We could be in Dallas' shoes: both forwards and another attacker out suspended and playing Vancouver on the road. That's a brutal way to go into Decision Day.
