It's rare to see justice served so quickly. This scumbag drug dealer gunned down a female cop here in North Jersey on Thursday after a car chase, ran over her body and then fled to Florida with the aid of his family. He got the "death penalty" courtesy of some sharp-shooting Fla. cops when he drew several guns and started firing indiscriminately like a nut. In a way it's good he got his just desserts because NJ will never execute some of its losers on death row. They include "The Iceman" who's been made famous by HBO and a number of other miscreants. What good is the D.P. if it's never utilized? http://www.bergen.com/page.php?qstr...FeXk2MzY5MDE2JnlyaXJ5N2Y3MTdmN3ZxZWVFRXl5Mg==
If you truly believe in the death penalty, you should have said you wished this guy had gotten away, and that someone who kinda looked like him was put in the electric chair in his place. Because that's what happens with the death penalty, after all. If you're fine with innocent people being executed, support the death penalty. If you're not, then, you should rethink your stance.
Cascarino - Check This Out http://www.cnn.com/2000/US/01/31/illinois.executions.02/ "We have now freed more people than we have put to death under our system -- 13 people have been exonerated and 12 have been put to death," Ryan told CNN. "There is a flaw in the system, without question, and it needs to be studied." This isn't just an Illinois problem. Our former Republican(!) governor was just more honest than most about the problem. I know death penalty supporters support the DP primarily get a fleeting sense of justice done and therefore a cheap moment of emotional satisfaction when someone is executed, but I won't support the DP until you can guarantee me human perfection in determining the guilt or innocence of accused persons.
To paraphrase George Will, the death penalty is a government program; and what government program works in a fair, equitiable & efficient manner? A good way to cut down on executions is to cut down on the Market for them. When was the last time your local Anheuser Busch distributor shot up your local Coors' distributor's house? When was the last time Robert Mondavi burned down your local Albertsons because they didn't pay for their Merlot on time?
Yes Dan, this is what happens with the death penalty... well said.. I mean AFTER ALL!! About a month ago we had a discussion about this, and it ended up going in circles ... Where do you draw the line.. how serious is an offense to be punishable by death.. even if it is a clear cut case.. Who has the right to play god? Is it really a deterent? etc.... Really just ends up hard to argue for either side without spewing links and quotes from pundits. Luckily, I can rest knowing that the death penalty is currently punishing many of those who take the life of innocents, and those who oppose capital punishment are fighting an uphill battle...
What a stunning use of facts and reason to refute Dan's post. Truly, sir, you are a great intellect! Wang.
Dude, this isn't even a theoretical argument anymore. It's been proven. Innocent people are on death row. If you're in favor of the death penalty, you're in favor of flat-out murder. Why not just implement Shirley Jackson's lottery, for all the use the death penalty is? Oh, but it serves as a deterrent! Yeah, because, someone who's falsely accused and sent to death row won't make THAT mistake again.
Unless what Dan spouted has never happened, you've got even less point with this post than you normally do. Is it really a deterrent? Doesn't seem to be. Y'all could take a leaf out of the EU's book and largely dispose of it. Yes, yes, I know it's unAmerican, but we struggle on nonetheless.
You've obviously forgotten our previous thread on this topic, where Herr Boston likened innocent people put to death as collateral damage and acceptable.
how many Dan? give me a % of people who are found innocent, before or after the execution. Has it happened? I am sure it has. Is it something historically in the realm of 1/1,000 or 1/10,000? I admit the system is not perfect, but it isnt not flawed enough to drop it..
Yes, I remember you accused me with something along the lines of: "geez, you just love to see innocent people die dont you? You love playing god.." As if the issue is so cut and dried. If it makes you feel better SoFla, I'll play along as Hitler this time too..
Re: Cascarino - Check This Out And I'm sure that you oppose traffic lights because it can't be guaranteed that they won't malfunction and cause the death of some poor soul... And guns for police, and smallpox vaccinations, and just about everything else you can do in this world.
The fact that you don't mind seeing innocent people die ("I admit the system is not perfect, but it isnt not flawed enough to drop it.. ") in order to preserve the death penalty kinda backs that up, doncha think?
I am not even a registered Republican. I dont choose my views based on political parties guidelines, I actually disagree with some rep. policies as well as some dem's..
Re: Re: Cascarino - Check This Out If they malfunctioned 52% of the time, I'd think it would be a good idea to reassess their efficacy.
Re: Re: Cascarino - Check This Out Judging by your post, I'm sure that you oppose analogies that actually have some resemblance to the topic under discussion. Dismissed.
It never ceases to amaze me how normally intelligent people can just ignore all evidence to the contrary when it conflicts with their most deeply-held beliefs. Go google Illinois death penalty Ryan and get smart on what appears to be the upwards of 20% or more of Illinois death row inmates who are/were wrongly convicted and/or just plain innocent. Then check out the ongoing cases in Texas (Gringo, someone help me out with a name here) where the county prosecutors and underpaid PDs, basically set up a death-row assembly line for any two-time felon who was African-American. Hell, there's nothing wrong, per se with the death penalty as a concept. But its completely f***** over as it is implemented by a power-mad, overzealous, racist criminal justice bureacracy.
Re: Re: Cascarino - Check This Out Great idea, just as soon as we add a 3rd choice, "Really, really guilty, we really mean it, we're sure this time. Really" to our current paltry choices of "guilty" and "not guilty."
And I still stand by what I said. I DO mind innocent people dying, regardless of the circumstance, but unfortunatly, it is unavoidable, and not worth scrapping the system for..
Re: Re: Re: Cascarino - Check This Out Nope, no 3rd step Dave, that allows for wiggle room and OJ simpson theatrics. one free paid paddie wagon trip to the "waiting room."
