I think I just saw our season go down the tubes. United players were fighting with each other out there! Ugh ... my lord ... what a disaster of a game.
Geiger with a pathetically poor performance in DC. He allowed thuggish play the whole game, consistently telling players "No more" and then doing so repeatedly for mostly Philly (but also DC players). He completely lost control of the game after: 1. Calling back a DC goal calling a foul on DC, despite the fact that no DC player touched the goalkeeper. 2. Called back a PK on a bullshit encourachment call (both teams came into the box very slightly) and then lost control of a pushing match that ensued when a player grabbed the ball after he turned his back on the players, giving Boskovic a red card but choosing not to give a red card to the player who provoked the incident. 3. Then gave a straight red card to Dudar for a foul that he had seen 10 times this game and done nothing but said "no more". I am generally supportive of the refs on the board, but that was a performance that harkens back to the first few years of the league.
First reaction: The loss of Boskovic is particularly problematic. This ship needs righting before it self-destructs at a key point. My euphemisms don't really work, but I don't care right now.
that has to be the worst ref'd game I have ever seen in MLS. inconsistent calls blown calls (goal after ball was cleared by Union player and the PK redo) ... failing to control emotions after his blown calls ... you have two red cards on one team - one on the other (which was not a second yellow and therefore should not have been a red card) you have also coaches confused over what was going on ... you have simply have a ref that lost control - and he was our rep to the Olympics? God help us. Olson better get control of that locker room - McDonald going after Korb in an intimidating way and Pontius lecturing Dudar on losing his mind .... serious issues ... this game was primo evidence on why the reffing of the MLS needs a complete overhaul.
I'd assume McDonald was yelling at him about that shit back pass that luckily Hamid was able to clear. Not sure if it was for the backpass being so shit or the fact he didn't send ot forward with no time left.
they need to take back his D license (the sarcasm should be obvious to many) .... he needs to try a second career.
Mtl fan here and despite all the bitching I make about the referee regarding to my own team, I agree this is the worst MLS officiated game I've ever seen. That was really horrendous.
So here is an executive summary of the game as I saw it. DeRo was absent until Bosko came on the field and then he got taken off for Saragosa (kill me). Korb was not terrible but his own teammates refused to utilize him on even basic triangles (the announcers noticed this). He's obviously not trustworthy and I was kind of shocked he got a decent kick on goal (although easily saved). Najar dribbled past a few people and then did absolutely nothing at midfield. He played well at right back. Jakovic was pressing forward to get passes in to the forwards because Najar couldn't. DeLeon needs to sit, he just doesn't have "it." Pajoy looked "ok." He finds good spots on set pieces but looks and jogs like an old man (a literal old man). Boskovich was the hero of he day until he got kicked out :/ second best player out there beyond Pontius Salihi made better runs, got OK service, did enough to say he was decent/fine. We 'should' have won with the penalty kick, but in the end, we could have been scored on several times, especially in the first half, so who knows really. Pontius was Pontius, he did what he had to do except score. Kitchen gets his fourth (4th) or fifth (5th) own goal in 1.5 seasons. I really want to know when this experiment will pay off because quite frankly, I miss Simms. We start next match without Dudar, without Boskovich... welp. In sum, if this were a good team, we'd be down by far more, but we played fairy well in the last 30. Many many calls were obviously "special" so it doesn't bear repeating.
i'm glad i didn't get to watch that, i would have had a coronary. i'm coming up to dc for wednesday's game. been planning it all season, likely the only one i'll be able to attend. i hope to god those suspensions don't hurt us that bad and the team chemistry isn't completely blown after that clusterf*ck. after this result chicago is a must win.
look at the bright side about the team chemistry - they go on the field again in 72 hours ... probably two light days of stretching and jogging and some discussions. A win can really help their team chemistry. DeRo and Pontius and Kitchen will get to display some leadership skills. I worry a little about Dudar's absence but a whole lot more about the conflict between BMac and Korb. I was at the Open Cup match and saw BMac lose his temper there as well.
I'm glad they're playing again in 3 days so they don't stew over this abortion. I wouldn't make too much about Korb-McD at the end; just emotions bubbling over. Still, Coach Olsen should close the locker rooms to the media and let everyone vent their spleen. Then go back to work tomorrow and take out our frustrations on the Fire.
Lahoud had three hard fouls after he recieved his yellow for dragging down the player by the shorts at midfield in the first half. Each time he was "warned" by Geiger. I was just wondering what it would take to get sent off in this match... Also, Salihi did encroach in the D. Much more than the two Philly players did inside the box. But if he calls it tonight, he better damn well sure call it on every PK the rest of his MLS career. https://twitter.com/BrianStraus/status/237334110585114624/photo/1 Thx, Jay!
I think the only game I've seen worse for DCUnited juju was that playoff game vs Chicago when Bobby Convey took on Stoikov.
I am usually pretty neutral about the impact of a ref on a game. The more games you watch, the more you realize most of the controversy is related to whether the ref had a good angle to see what happened. OK. But in this game the calls were so consistently bad and against United, for the first time, I wonder what was going on. If the ref was so often out of position to make the right call, why is he calling this game. United had 2 good goals called back. The ref also got in the way of 2 balls that took away dangerous United attacks and one was on a break. Michael Lahoud had one bad foul or "professional" foul after another and gets a yellow. In the second half he has at least 3 additional fouls that should have warranted a yellow and there is no 2nd yellow. I am at a loss how in comparison to the deference provided Union players time and time again, United players get 2 straight reds for their respective infractions. They get no warning, no discussion just red. This team is imploding. Olsen is losing control. I don't understand the trade. I don't understand keeping Boskovic on the bench. I don't understand how McDonald is preferred over Jakovic. I don't understand why we are keeping 2 DPs on the bench. I don't understand why DeRo is playing when he is so far out of form. What has happened to Santos? I don't know if United or the Ref had more to do with throwing this game.
Dudar EARNED a straight red. Everything else is spot on. Was Korb and McDonald fighting over Korb's poor pass to the keeper? This game got real stupid real quickly at the end. Smart move to take DeRo out after missing the PK; he is still thinking about that kick and would not have been that focused.
If that game were played in any other country, they would have burnt the stadium down.. Pathetic, tragic.. I was expecting people to start ripping the chairs out after wittnessing that. I dont care about we had two/possibly a third goal not allowed, the complete and utter lack and total loss of control on the pitch by the ref was inexcusable. I am actually embarrased, to have watched that, it was practically WWE out there.
Same as the others, I don't usually complain about refs, and Geiger usually does okay, but that was the biggest ref disaster that I've seen in a long time.
Lahoud should have been gone early in the second half. I'm just mad our offense can't get anything going. Our weakness is long balls into the box and that is what other teams give us. This might be a scary second half of the season.
So, obviously Geiger had one of the worst games of his career, and obviously the first PK going in should have given DC a 2-1 win, and obviously if Dudar gets a red for that challenge then several defenders in this league should be suspended 5-10x per season. That being said: We have a grand total of one attacking player in anything resembling decent form right now (Pontius), we have no depth at outside anything (D or MF), and we've got defenders screaming at and pushing each other at the end of matches. If we collapse from where we are to not making the playoffs - and that's not out of the realm of possibility - there needs to be a lot of pink slips this off-season.
I was yelling at the television trying to convince DeRo not to retake the penalty. Unless you're Jaime Moreno, the odds are against your converting it. Should've let Chris try the retake.
He wasn't keeping possession with the ball and the midfeild looked like crap the last 2 or 3 games. I understand throwing DeRo there, but the midfield play was the same for the first 15mins of the game compared to the previous three games. Yes that back line was terrible. It didn't work.
