Dave Johnson describes four minutes of stoppage as "plenty of time for DC United to get something out of this game." Dave, they haven't scored a goal in the run of play in 90 minutes; why would 4 more be "plenty of time"?
If we don't make the playoffs, MLS should have the good sense to tell Chang that he needs to get new people to run his team.
Based on today I have to agree. They just didn't look dangerous most of the game and Tino, Davies and Burch were real liabilities. Yes, we were playing with major pieces missing, but so were they. With only two people (DeRo and Najar) capable of taking a credible shot or creating a chance, United is just too easy to defend. If someone else doesn't step up, I don't see post season, and that would be very bad for the franchise. Too many years without being in the playoffs...
Why would finishing in 10th place vs 11th mean firing the FO? PEOPLE: DC United has been a 11th-13th place team all year. It wasn't going to significantly change for the last 4 games. http://www.settingthetable.info/home/index.php/dc-united-2011/
Making the playoffs would be the only thing that should allow them to stay. Missing the playoffs year after year (especially since they expanded the playoffs) means you suck at your job and its time for actual leadership.
I'll post the numbers on the MLSN&A board later, and by the number's we're not doomed or anything like that. However, watching that game today -- well, if you're a playoff team and you're up a goal on the road against a playoff rival, you find a way to walk away with at lest one point. But we just blew it. There are a couple other teams that seem to want it more. I just don't see us making it.
Look, regardless of the position we end in the fact is we just don't have the personnel on this team to compete. The only real quality we have on this team based on recent performance is Najar, Pontius and DeRosario. That just doesn't get it done with teams like Seattle, LA, RSL and FC Dallas. All with much better teams than we have.
That's a flawed analysis. That's by points. We've been a couple games behind most of the year. So naturally we've been low on the points table. But I've been tracking the PPG table rankings all year. We've been in the playoff hunt for months.
And yet here they are. If this team was in anyway consistent, I would agree that ppg would be a useful predictor, but they're not, and in fact I would say at this point ppg has been misleading, in the sense that some think DC will increase their position from where they are in the table. They're not going to gain points per game the more games they play they're only going to lose them.
If we had more competent people involved, the team would be better. That, then, would be the league acting in favor of one team over others. Not exactly what people were expecting when they signed on the dotted line, kicked in their $40M to the league, and became investor/operators.
Without Pontius, DC has too few dangerous pieces to worry a defense. Opposing teams can really key in on DeRo, watch Najar (who, let's be honest, is dangerous but not in that DeRo or Gomez "take the game over" manner), and be content to force Davies, Quaranta and/or King (HA!) to beat them. Without DeRo, I'm actually worried about the Vancouver match. Us traveling across the country, missing our only consistent offensive piece and having some questions on our back line? We could easily draw or lose that match, which could be a pretty bad blow to the playoff chances. R.
2010 Goals 21 Goals Allowed 47 (30 game season) 2011 Goals 46 Goals Allowed 46 (30 games completed) I guess this team really could have used Pena as the Assistant Coach they attempted to but failed to hire.
I voted "no" in Goff's playoff poll. These last two games sealed the deal for me. Either these guys are physically or mentally not "good" enough to win in this league. Columbus was 0-5-1 in its last six games and DCU made them look like Cup contenders. Dave Kasper -- you worthless pile of crap -- I'm pointing my finger at you. You have sunk almost $400K into Ngenwenya, Quaranta and Burch. I'm giving you a pass on Simms, although only God knows why. Every year we see teams with Monteros, Renterias, etc. and we get the Brasescos, the Allsops and ********ing useless Uruguayan "forward" whose name I have mercifully forgotten -- except I can't forget HE DIDN'T SCORE IN ANY COMPETITIONS WHILE HE WAS HERE. Actually, I'm sorry Dave Kasper, you are not a worthless pile of crap, that is offensive to crap -- you are a waste of skin. My last credit card bill had my charge for next season's tickets, should I protest the charge, claiming that I was the victim of fraud?
I haven't had a lot of confidence in them for months but I've been tuning in every week hoping that they show me I'm wrong.
I was in the hinterlands and couldn't see the match vs. Columbus and am thankful. Before DeRosario DC United was close to unwatchable in my view, though I saw them plenty of times. I agree that the best trade would be Dave Kasper for a sack of potatos (and I'd be willing to give up the sack and the potatos after the trade). I'm pretty sure this team will squander the opportunity to make the playoff and that the games in hand are just a cruel taunt to us lifelong DC United fans. losing both games this week were killer.
