According to Match Tracker, the US's 60th minute goal was Convey with an assist from Adu.

Tino in for Mapp in 73rd minute.

Adu subbed out in the 78th minute.

In the dying seconds of injury time (of which there were four minutes), Argentina scores to equalize. Full time is blown right after the restart. The Stars-and-Stripes head to Golden Goal.

Atouk, I see we are both confused. Match Tracker has a typo. The goal was in the 70th minute.

Yep, that's what I thought originally. Then I saw the FIFA site said 59th minute, so I didn't know what to believe!

Argentina's Fernando Cavenaghi scores a 100th minute Golden Goal. Ouch.

Heartbreaking loss IMO. No way should there have been four minutes of injury time, not do I think the PK call was legit. Anywho the DCU players-

Convey- MOTM. Easily the most creative force out there and also did a lot to calm his team down. Was everywhere. Scored too.

Adu- Started horribly but got better as the game went along. Hard to believe that he was subbed for Klass as he was a big help to Convey on a day where Johnson was off. (Johnson could easily have had 2 goals.)

Quaranta- A late sub for The Cartographer; he did well in his time. Served up a tasty cross right before the PK and was involved in all aspects of the game. Pitty that the US is out of the tournament as Tino seemed to be paying attention and maybe with more time he'd start to get back into a rhythm.

Wow, Convey is the class act of the team. He didn't deserve the let down his teammates produced.

Eddie Johnson, however, is the most overrated player in the US. I place the blame for the loss squarely upon his shoulders. His career is going backwards, and he showed it the whole tournament.

Convey should hold his head high though. I hope he stays in MLS. He has a great future ahead of him, and MLS needs him.

that was a heart breaker, (obvious) followed by matchtracker as well, and toward the end of stoppage time i was ready to sprawl across the floor of the cubicle shouting we won. now, im depressed. You guys that watched it , what happened at the end, w/ Q1's cross to Convey? could he just not pull the trigger or what?

How was the refereeing? Can't help but think about OT goals vs. US ....

    2000--WNT vs. Norway in Olympics

2003--MNT vs. Brazil in Gold Cup

2003--U20s vs. Argentina in U-20 World Cup

    Conspiracy theorists, have at it.

Man, I'd have to say that, as a DC United fan, I'm sick and tired of my team giving up a last second goal to send the game into overtime, and then lose it off of some sh!t call. When will it end?

From Matchtracker, Convey sounded as if he played a solid game. I hope he continues with that effort throughout the offseason and into '04 with United.

Adu is going to have a rough and frustrating season with DC United. He seems to excellent in open spaces, but he's just doesn't have the size yet to hold his own in the tight spaces.

Santino, I have no idea about. I guess we can take him off of our list of strikers and add him in as just another midfielder. He seems to be pretty damn good on the crosses. That's something that we, at DC United, seem to miss. Granted, United players could serve up crosses right and left. We just had no one to finish the crosses.

While I didn't watch this game, I think the comment that EJ is overrated and going downhill. The games I saw him in he was a threat all the time. Of course, I didn't "see" either of our losses.

    UUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHH

one minute less of injury time and Convey might be lookin at the Golden Ball for outstanding player of the tournament.

I'm rapidly beginning to hate overtime

This is nonsense -- pure and simple. Johnson will be one of the best forwards the US has produced to date within the next four years. There's at least a chance he'll be ready for Germany, though probably as a sub.

Convey was a stud in the whole tournament. Definitely a Best XI.

Adu is a good player at the U-20 level today. Which is hard to believe.

No way was there four minutes of added time in the second half.

I thought the PK was an ok call. Sometimes you wouldn't see it, but I thought Moor missed the ball and kicked the player. Close enough not to complain about in any event.

Damn! I wish my disappointment would go away. We should have won that f****** game. I'm so sick of coming so close to beating teams like Argentina and Brazil, only to lose it due to a PK call in overtime. They (Argentina) were luckly to win that game, pure and simple.

    For those not following the tournament, Convey played in the center and was team captain. Some highlights;

Game 1 v. Paraguay: Goal in the final minutes to ice a 3-1 victory. Upper 90 on the run from 20 yards

Game 2 v. Germany: Assist off set piece in 3-1 loss. Passed to teammates about 4 times to set 'em up 1 v. 1 w/keeper. None converted, not even by Freddy (I'm willing to accept that as the exception that proves the rule)

Game 3 v. South Korea: Brought down in box to earn 2nd PK in 2-0 victory.

Game 4 v. Ivory Coast: Assist on Mapp goal (back to goal, Convey plays high ball on one touch over his head and directly into the path of an overlapping Justin Mapp), through pass to streaking Adu that earns penalty for second goal in 2-0 win.

Game 5 v. Argentina: Convey scores in the 60th minute, assist to Freddy. Springs Johnson for a 1 v. 1 with keeper (after EJ deeks defender) in the 90th minute, EJ hits side netting.

5 games, 2 goals, 2 assists (could easily have had 5 or 6), 1 PK earned, 1 PK created

Playing like a man among boys for the entire tournament (U-20 does lack a lot of players eligible but with their club teams at the moment - MLS just happens to be in their off-season).

One of the top 1 or 2 players on the field in EVERY game

Bobby and Freddy seem to know how to play together...

    Missed opportunities

the loss can be blamed squarely on missed opportunities to put the game away and unfortunately for EJ he had the two clearest of those opportunities. I don't agree that his talent is diminishing, in fact I believe he will play a role in the future of the US National team, but this wasn't his game and shame on Rongen for not realizing it when he made the substitution for Adu. Clearly Adu should have stayed and EJ should have left the game. It clearly cost us the game.

An Argentine defender read the cross and got to the ball just as Convey did.

The ref wasn't friendly toward the US. That's all I'll say.

Johnson and Ryan Cochrane were the principle culprits in the loss. How Johnson missed his open header and his 1v1 with the keeper is completely beyond me. In the run up to Argentina's tying goal, you can see Whitbread shouting and pointing at Cochrane to pay attention. Cochrane had his head up his butt. Rather than marking the Argentine or stepping forward to put him offside, he just stood there. But I guess that's what you get when you put a collegiate player in that position.

At the same time, the team as a whole must shoulder the blame. In the last 15 minutes, the US kept allowing Argentina time and space just 20-30 yards from goal. They made no effort to waste time by possessing the ball either. Eddie Johnson's carelessness with the ball during the last 10 minutes was particularly infuriating.

Agree 100%. About EJ, if he had played more for the Burn, instead of riding the pine, he might have finished a couple more of those 1-v-1's. I think he will only improve, with experience.

Bobby and Cronin were the two best men on the pitch. Period.

It is exciting to think that Bobby and Freddy will be together at some point in DC's attack.

Cronin was a monster. He stoned Cavenaghi on two free kicks that would have been goals with a lesser player.

I only hope that Tino gets that desire to play back again. Wake up son, you've got too much talent to waste!

So does this accelerate Bobby's move to Europe?

Not if he's set on England because it's a year wait on reapplication for the work permit. However, I'm sure he was noticed for future consideration.

By the way, remember what the British Home Office said about Bobby -- not of the highest caliber, not able to have an impact on the English game. Seems to me that the English game, as represented by their U-20s, needs some help and can use someone like Bobby. England went 0-2-1 and was the only team to SCORE NOT ONE SINGLE GOAL before being sent home.

[Yes, I know English clubs don't necessarily release the best young talent that England has to offer.]

Only if Bobby wants to give up his dream (for the moment) of playing in England. He can't go back there until next summer becasue of the work permit rules. If he wanted to go to Germany or Holland, he might go in January, if its England or bust, it might be a few more years.

I don't know if it "accelerated" it or not, but it sure as hell "guaranteed" it if he's so inclined.

Next summer when twelve months have elapsed since the work permit denial, won't he likely have enough senior US caps over the previous 24 month-period to qualify for a permit automatically?

I would think a number of EPL teams will be interested.

I think it's better for his development that he leave once he finds a good situation, preferably in the EPL, where he will get consistent playing time.
