Yooooooooooooo. half a billion valuation? BREAKING: billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong near deal to buy into @dcunited at $500M valuation, source says. He and managing partner Jason Levien buying Erick Thohir’s stake, source says. Levien will continue to run the @MLS club. Soon-Shiong owns piece of @Lakers #sportsbiz— Scott Soshnick (@soshnick) April 10, 2018
So DCU has a higher value then Orlando? Of course DCU is opening their own building this season, plus a new training and academy facility next year. I wonder what the value of the Red Bull’s and LA Galaxy are now? Especially Red Bull’s value with all of their infrastructure.
I find that literally unbelievable. That would make DC 1/5 as valuable as th Carolina Panthers. Not the Sounders, not Atlanta...DC. No way. The article only cites one source. To me, it reeks of poor journalism and clickbait.
Moved this to its own thread. https://www.washingtonpost.com/amph...sell-stake-in-club/?__twitter_impression=true Little more information, turns out it is minority owner Jason Levien that is buying Thorir out and that he’s assembling an ownership group that includes Soon-Shiong. The WaPo article doesn’t mention the $500 million valuation tho.
Not hard to believe considering Orlando is valued at $490 mil and the market DC is in the DC/Balt market is the 4th biggest in the US. Haven't we learned anything from Pawn Stars? Remember value is what someone is willing to pay.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...onaire-is-said-to-be-close-to-d-c-united-deal No longer twitter fodder it's official Bloomberg confirming.
Lol I know we've been beaten as a once prowd franchise and I understand your pessimism but this is good news. It makes you wonder what the sponsorship revenue is coming is. MLS is notorious for not being forthcoming wise details of sponsorship money. The only reason we got the $117 mil Adidas value was because a source leaked it. Still no word on the value of the Canadian TV rights or the 10 multi year International TV rights deals signed. Right after they negotiated the CBA. Makes you wonder if they didn't get some good deals and just haven't been forth coming, because billionaires didn't become billionaires by throwing away money. see Orlando's Investor paying millions to buy just a 8% stock and now United's billionaire investor.
Maybe Levien is the "soccer brains" behind DC United and realizes he wont ever be able to construct an organization with paper billionaire Thohir as the lead investor. Levien asked "how much" it would take to rid the franchise of the tumor, and the number that came back was half a bill, give or take. No way United is worth that much. There's no real TV deal, no real sponsorship deal. They're not going to have crowds like SKC, let alone ATL. Sick joke when these guys are bailing out for pennies on the dollar two years from now. Thx, Jay!
How much did DCs stadium cost? 200 million? 250? 300? If you just lazily added the cost of the stadium + training facility to the franchise you could get close. I mean, Crew folk supposedly offered Precourt $75 mil for less than half & $160 for the whole shebang a year or so ago. Tack on a $300 mil stadium and lowly Columbus with our terrible metrics is in that ballpark (though you could build a stadium for half that here). OTOH, I saw Goff tweet that the franchise is NOT worth $500 million.
Funny how we have had two franchise valuation stories out in the last couple weeks. When is the last one? Precourt buying the Crew in 2013? All since the Modell lawsuit filed. Am I Fox Mulder here?
These crazy franchise valuations are not restricted to MLS. As a comparison with another league, the Memphis Grizzlies were just valued at $1.3-1.4 Billion and they are a pretty small market team. http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...valued-13-billion-14-billion-robert-pera-deal
Guess what folks, prices are relative. If every house on your block sell for a million and your house is being held together with duct tape, what's it worth ? That's why the Crooked Mayor of Columbus opted for a photo opportunity instead of making a real non contingency offer.
MLB allowed Jeter to overpay for the Marlins for 1.2 billion just so they can say they sold the team for 1.2 billion. Valuations are out of control.
But they are related. Even if your house is the one held together by duct tape, if the houses around you are selling for $1 million, then you're house is going to get a pretty significant bump. It won't be worth $1 million, but $600k-$700k is certainly a possibility.
