We will be signing him to a 6 year contract on what seems to be very reasonable wages. That means that he will be almost 29 before we have to pay him big time money. The big transfer fee is worth it when you are signing up a 22 year old for their next six years. The big transfer fee also indicates that this was the only striker that the club wanted. They surely had a list of alternatives, but Darwin was the man Klopp had to have. The only other times the club acted this way was to sign Van Dijk and Alisson, and those worked out okay.
I think this gives us flexibility to extend him in year 3 or 4 (which means he is doing well) and keep him happy, plus protect value should we want to sell later on too.
OK. So 77M fee is probably the baseline, considering he will be playing... and if things go really well, no one is going to care about sending an extra 9-10M if LFC go to/win the CL or win a league or whatever the "success" criteria are. Happy about the business being done. I think the long 5/6 yr deal on reasonable wages is excellent work... and if he is an absolute star, he will be able to negotiate a raise after a couple years. Which again, don't think anyone is going to argue him getting near the 200k/week club if he's bagging bunches of goals.
"I'll wait till I see him in the tunnel, wearing the shirt." (or something to that effect) Welcome Darwin Nunez!
Squawka on Twitter: "Who is going to score more Premier League goals next season? " / Twitter You can see why teams are excited about Nunez.
Noticed an interesting little legerdemain by some in print, but more prominently on social media. This transfer does look like being our biggest ever, but it’s certainly not the biggest ever PL transfer. Normally when discussing transfers ins and outs in the PL, figures are quoted in £. However I’ve seen more than a few articles, tweets, FB posts etc. that quote the figure in € and $ which is a bit unusual. Therefore making the figure seem higher.
haha - totally! the 100m (euros) number makes it flashy! it's not as exciting to say 65m (pounds) + 20m add-ons (pounds) or even just 85m (pounds). especially when Grealish went for 100m pounds last summer.
Also being used somewhat as a stick to beat Klopp and Liverpool, trying to insinuate that they really are the elite equals of City and Qatar.
David Maddock @MaddockMirror Darwin Nunez medical got underway at 11am. Expected to take best part of the afternoon, with results confirmed in morning. So no unveiling today, and technically not until July 1 when Portuguese transfer window opens. But #LFC anticipate a formal signing announcement tomorrow.
Doesn't really mean anything - but interesting: Darwin Núñez: a rampaging bull who should be an ideal fit for Liverpool | Liverpool | The Guardian Good article overall.
As with a lot of continental clubs, Benfica has an elected chairman model. Think Barca/Real. Hard to know, but I suspect it is, an ex-chairman who wants his job back. I’m just surprised, like the French counting fake tickets, that he didn’t claim he would have sold only for eleventy billion space doubloons.
I think we are starting to see pattern developing with our forwards. Sadio Mane spent 6 seasons at Liverpool. If Mo Salah leaves on a free next summer he will have spent 6 seasons at Liverpool. Darwin Nunez is about to sign a 6 year contract with Liverpool.
