Anyone else watching the two 'World' Championship Darts tournaments at the moment? F'ing brilliant!!! Every year for two weeks after christmas the sport finally gets some seriously deserved airtime. How can something as boring as snooker be so beloved by the media yet they consistently ignore darts??? Maybe the sport hasn't recovered from the 1980's image of fat bastards with their darts in one hand and two cigarettes in the other swigging pints of Tenent's Super Strength lager in between shots. I think now it's starting to recover and people will watch again 'cause it's a wicked atmosphere. I've got my tickets for Lakeside next year and cannot wait!! P.S. Apologies to any American and Canadian readers as you've probably got your own weird rules and tournaments.
P.P.S. Actually one of the players through to the quarter-finals at Purfleet is Canadian John Part. He actually seems quite a nice bloke and I wouldn't mind him winning it. P.P.P.S All the Americans are long gone as they're bloody hopeless. Ha! Ha! Still, I don't suppose they care as it's a sport they didn't invent.
The most emotion I have ever heard an English announcer give in a broadcast was for darts. Question, do the "athletes" get more points if they are drunk?
When does the one on the BBC start or have I missed it. I have watched some of the Darts on sky, only for the mad comentating from that geordie guy, but i enjoy the World championships from the Lakeside better.
No, you're in luck. The Embassy World Darts from Lakeside starts tomorrow (4/1). I also prefer this one as Sky's coverage is a little tacky but you have to admit that showing every match is impressive. With the BBC you are lucky to get a 30 minute highlight programme at some godforesaken hour of the morning. P.P.P.P.S John Part update.......'Darth Maple' (possibly the worst nickname in all darts) is through to the semi-finals at Purfleet after annhilating Chris 'The Bristol Bumpkin' Mason 5-0. Good on yer Johnny!!!!!
The commentary of Sid Waddell is one of the fixtures of darts on British TV. Basically he's a complete crackpot. His over the top shouting and broad Geordie accent either piss you off or you love him. Personally I tolerate him as I love to watch the darts. As for the second part of your quote, this is the sort of attitude that many people seem to have about darts since the halcyon days of the 80's when people tuned in to see just how many pints players could quaff during the games. Players these days take much better care of themselves and whilst might not be the prototype 'athletes' they have had to slim down and keep themselves in shape. It ain't easy playing for 90 minutes on a baking stage you know. (not that I have of course)
You know what the problem with darts is? Too much scoring. Now, if they start using goalies, then I'll watch it more often.
Latest quarter final results from the PDC World Darts Championships in Purfleet, Essex. John 'Darth Maple' Part v Chris 'The Bristol Bumpkin' Mason 5-0 Kevin 'The Artist' Painter v Richie 'The Prince of Wales' Burnett 5-2 Tonight, Alan 'The Iceman' Warriner takes on Roland 'The Tripod' Scholten and No.1 seed Phil 'The Power' Taylor beats Dennis 'Too boring to have a nickname' Smith 5-0. Will post the results later if anyone cares. (doubt it).
who was that guy who had a blast at Phil " the power " taylor? will they be squaring off in a match? I'll watch it if they are.
The player who has had a dig at 'The Power' was Alan 'The Iceman' Warriner and they do indeed clash in tonights semi-finals. It wasn't exactly a scathing attack by Iceman, all he said was that Taylor had had it all his own way for far too long and a lot of people would like too see him get his arse kicked by someone. The media has blown it out of all proportion as usual. I wouldn't fancy Iceman's chances at the best of times without giving Taylor any extra motivation, look for him to melt quickly. Semi final lineup...........Alan 'The Iceman' Warriner v Phil 'The Power' Taylor John ' Darth Maple ' Part v Kevin 'The Artist' Painter. Also, today sees the start of the BBC's coverage of the Embassy World Darts from the Lakeside, Frimley Green at 6:40. Make the most of it as after this finishes darts dissapears of our TV screens 'til at least July.
