So the 2017-18 Superliga season has just started last week and though the transfer window is still open to the end of this month, the Europa cup games and transfers so far, do seem to give clues about who will be able to fight for the Championship, Silver and Bronze medals this season..

Starting with FC København that won the Championship no less that 22 points ahead of the Silver-medalists from Brøndby ... but I'm qute sure this is not going to happen this season, considering that FCK have lost the "spine" of their team, selling ther captain in defense, Matthias "Zanka" Jørgensen to newly promoted English PL side Huddersfield, just as they sold their key central midfielder Thomas Delaney to Werder Bremen at the end of last season and then also their key striker Andreas Cornelius to Italian side Atalanta ...

Obviously they also sold Nikolai Jørgensen to Feyenoord last season, where he became top-scorer of the Dutch league, but replacing him with Rasmus Falk, who has the same kind of creative skills in attack, but unfortunately has been long-term injured and is still not ready to play ... another long-term injured player is their key right-back Peter Ankersen who is out with a broken ankle ... so also considering that they have sold "Zanka" + their key left-back Ludwig Augustinsson to Werder Bremen, it adds to their defensive worries, though they have replaced Augustinsson with another Swedish LB, Pierre Bengtson who they signed from Mainz, just as they got Nikolaj Boilesen, who is now finally fit and able to make a difference. But as mentioned, thy seem weaker all over the pitch right now, both due to the key players they have sold and replaced, but also due to some misfortunate long-term injuries.

Brøndby seem in much better shape at the moment, beating FC Midtjylland by 4-0 in their first game and they have signed som players who seem to fit right in from day-one ... Especially the quick, solid and always hard working attacking midfielder Kasper Fisker, who was Randers absolute best player last season, in my opinion. But also Besar Halimi who is on a 1-year loan from Mainz, has already made his mark. So at least Brøndby seem to have a head start this season, in compare with FCK.

Obviously Brøndby do not have as much money for transfers or their wage budget as FCK, but they seem to have solved this problem by especially getting players on loan deals from coach Zorninger's former German club, Leipzig and other German clubs, which has been a success so far, last Leipzig addition being the left back Anthony Jung .... while also signing some Danish players on more permanent basis, like their latest signing, Danish U21 central midfielder Lasse Vigen, who they got from Fulham.... only real loss this summer is central midfielder Lebogang Phiri, who did not want to renew his contract but has moved to France and Guingamp ... and Kahlenberg who has retired.

FC Midtjylland lost 4-0 to Brøndby in the first round of this season, but they seem to be the only team really able to challenge Brøndby and FCK this season ... their moneyball approach to signing players, makes it it difficult for me to evaluate their signings, but the two Norwegians , Gustav Wikheim and Alexander Sørloth they have picked up from the Belgium and Dutch league, while the centre back Zsolt Korcsmár is an experienced international from Hungary, while Bozhidar Kraev is an only 20-yo Bulgarian international.... FCM rely very much on their experienced captain in midfield Jakob Poulsen, but he has turned 34 and could suffer injuries, so they will need other experienced players to support their many young players.

FC Nordsjælland, that finished 5th last season, with the youngest squad in the Superliga, could have been the big revelation this season, but they have been selling their young star players ... in fact much like FCK, they are losing the "spine" of their team, the Slovakian U21 international midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, sold for €5 million ($5.75 million) to Spanish side Celta Vigo and Danish U21 international and last season Superliga topscorer, Marcus Ingvartsen has likewise been sold for around the same €5 million figure, just as it would seem their Danish U21 international midfielder Emiliano Marcondes is on his way to Brentford in England ... and likely also their captain and centre back, the Danish U21 international Andreas Maxsø, could also be gone before the summer transfer window is closed... So no Championship for FCN I'm sure ... they still got some very talented young players, but they have not been signing replacements for the players they have lost... only a 19-yo Collins Tanor on loan from the Manchester City Academy.

Lyngby ... have not done much in this summer transfer window, except making a swap deal sending their keeper Jesper Hansen to Midtjylland, while getting the FCK keeper Mikkel Andersen in return, otherwise they have sold the only 18-yo striker Jens Odgaard to Inter Milan, surely a big talent, but still to young to be a key player for them, so it's not really making their Superliga team much weaker in compare with last season... or in other words .. Lyngby have neither signed or lost any players that will make much of a difference .. and in a league like the Superliga, where plenty of players move on to something bigger and are sold and replaced, it's only positive to be able to keep your team more or less intact two seasons in a row, which could be an advantage for lyngby this season, though they do not have much money and usually would be considered among the favorites for relegation.

But Lyngby did more than well last season, with their no nonsense style of play as newly promoted and so far they have also done well in the Europa League this season, by beating a much more experienced Slovan Bratislava both home and away... So I predict that they will do fairly well this season as well, so long as they keep working hard as a team, knowing their limits.

SønderjyskE is also a team that used to be in the relegation battle every season, but did well in their first season in Europe last year. Now they are trying to stay in top 6, which I think will be difficult for them having very little money to spend, just like Lyngby. Not that they have lost that many key players. Only the centre back Pierre Kanstrup and an aging Johan Absalonsen, but they were still key players that they can not really afford to replace, so they seem to copy Brøndby to a lesser extend by getting Niki Zimling from Mainz and signing the German keeper Sebastian Mielitz ... otherwise they have done a cheap calculated bet by signing the Cameroonian striker William Tchuameni from Portuguese top level side CD Feirense on a free transfer. But nothing spectacular .. and a young inexperienced Stefan Gartenmann signed from the Dutch Heerenveen reserves, will hardly be able to replace a highly experienced key centre back like Pierre Kanstrup.

Brøndby have just signed the Swedish U21 international Simon Tibbling on a 5-year contract. from Dutch side Groningen. The transfer fee is said to be only €500k + an unknown sell-on clause ...

Nice signing by Brøndby to further strengthen the midfield. Tibbling should be a good replacement for the departed Lebogang Phiri.

Randers finished just outside top 6 last season, but have lost their key attacking midfielder and best player Kasper Fisker to Brøndby this summer .. They have also lost their captain and key centre back Mads Fenger, who was offered a tax-free $500k sign-on fee by Swedish side Hammarby, which Randers was unable to match ... just as it's the case in Denmark, foreign players now also pay lower income taxes in Sweden, though especially regarding sign-on fees, which is why some Danish players move to Sweden. He also had an offer from Zulte Waregem, but they also were not able to match the offer from Hammarby. Randers have also said goodbye to their Swedish striker Viktor Lundberg, who has moved to Maritimo in Portugal and Edgar Babayan who has signed a permanent deal with Hobro.

Instead of signing one-to-one replacements for their captain in defense and the always hard working Kasper Fisker, they have signed the hardworking American defensive midfielder Perry Kitchen from Scottish side Hearts, but he is obviously neither a centre back or an attacking midfielder, though he could become a kind of hard working defensive captain in midfield, They have also signed the young Georgian international left winger Saba Lobzhanidze, to make up for some of the loss, but with these changes Randers probably need to adjust their game plan and do look weaker in attack than last season.

Silkeborg were one of last seasons relegation candidates, but in the end did better than expected. They have said goodbye to a few, but not any key players, except for Nicklas Helenius who was only on loan from AaB Aalborg ...and they have managed to sign som solid reinforcements. not least the still fairly young but former Danish International Casper Sloth who obviously has potential, but has not impressed since his failed stay at Leeds United. They have also signed the aging but still very fast winger Stephan Petersen and have managed to get the Swedish U21 international Gustaf Nilsson on loan from Brøndby. All in all some promesing reinforcements for a team with little money.

For AaB Aalborg last season was a bit of a disappointment not finishing in top 6 and they have rid themselves of some of the expensive players who did not impressed, not least the ageing Swedish centre back Markus Holgersson, former Danish International Casper Sloth and also their former key players Thomas Enevoldsen and Nicklas Helenius ... but they have also sold their highly promesing 20-yo right back Joakim Mæhle to Genk for €2 million.

In return they have signed the Danish international Jores Okore from FC København and the Viborg right back Kristoffer Pallesen and the very young Slovakian defensive midfielder Filip Lesniak on loan from Tottenham ... still, on paper AaB look weaker than last season..

OB Odense were also a disappointment last season, but have done next to nothing on the transfer market except for signing the AaB striker Nicklas Helenius, and replacing their keeper, so they are apparently hoping that by keeping the players they alredy got and not making any real changes will add to their consistency and give them bettter results this season.

AGF Aarhus is the club with the 4th largest salary and transfer budget in the Superliga, so having to play relegation play-off's last season was a huge disappointment, even though AGF are still in the process of implementing a new (4-1-4-1) system and getting the right players who will fit the style of play, after the relegation and promotion a few years back.

So the main problem for AGF last season was the need of getting rid of lots of players who no longer fit in and also were not good enough for a top-6 team, but perhaps were the right kind of players for a promotion and first season in the Superliga ... This transition has been a bit longer than expected, also because they both had to wait for contracts to expire, while also being able to attract the right kind of players to specific positions in the team, which is more easily said than done.

But AGF have been fairly active on the transfer market this summer,... saying goodbye to the fairly expensive and aging attacking midfielder Danny Olsen and winger Stephan Petersen, while the likewise aging Icelandic international Elmar Bjarnason has moved to Turkey after his contract expired. .. and then centre back Thomas Juel-Nielsen has moved to Israel after his short term deal with AGF had expired.

This obviously made room in the budget for some replacements and reinforcements, which is the now former SønderjyskE captain in defense Pierre Kanstrup, the AC Horsens left back Frederik Møller, the quick right winger Jakob Ankersen (twin brother of FCK right back Peter Ankersen) signed from Belgium side Zulte Waregem and the Swedish former Ajax attacking midfielder Tobias Sana, who perhaps lack the ability to score all that many goals which is why he did not make it to a bigger stage, but is the kind of creative attacking midfielder who will do the unexpected, which very much is what AGF are in need of, to assist their captain and all-time Superliga goal-machine Morten Duncan ... AGF have also signed central midfielder Adama Guira from French side Lens, who used to be a key player for SønderjyskE before moving abroad... So AGF clearly should be quite stronger than last season.

AC Horsens performed as could be expected last season, being part of the relegation battle, but being just good enough to escape ...They have said goodbye to their two American players, keeper Steve Clark who did fairly well and defensive midfielder Conor O'Brien, who has actually been quite popular among the fans, but do not really fit their style of play, mainly defending and hoofing the ball upfield ...I think that O'Brien's main problem is that he is too good a ball-player for the kind of relegation-troubled teams that pick him up, while the top-teams do not really look his way, because they are looking to sign foreigns midfielders with experience from bigger leagues abroad.

Horsens have also said goodbye to an aging Martin Albrechtsen and Kim Aabech who are both now past their prime. But they are still highly experienced players difficult to replace if you have little money to spend, so they have mainly been looking for players in the Danish 1. Division, though also picking up the Finnish keeper Jesse Joronen from Fulham and the Filipino left back Daisuke Sato from the Romanian league .... the young centre back Alexander Ludwig could seem to be a real scoop, just as Danish-German Simon Okosun has been excellent in central midfield for Vendsyssel in the Danish 1. Division, but obviously they now need to adjust to playing Superliga. So though they may be talented, they lack the experience to make a real difference for Horsens from day one ... the now former Viborg right back Jonas Thorsen, has superliga experience and is an ok defender, But I don't think Horsens will do much better in the league this season, with the kind of signings they have made.

Hobro IK, won the Danish 1. Division last season to earn a quick return to the Superliga and obviously they are now full-time professionals and will be able to use their past experince at this level ... and they are actually trying play some fairly nice short-passing and are not the kind of highly defensive physical kick-and-rush minded team you perhaps would expect fighting to escape relegation at the bottom of the league. They got the kind of experienced players who are not going to panic and hoofing the ball upfield.

They have not lost any key players and if you look at the good experienced players they already got, they got Quincy Antipas who has plenty of Superliga experience from his years at Sønderjyske and Brøndby, The French winger Wilfried Domoraud has experience from playing in the Austrian Bundesliga, just as the German right back Björn Kopplin has experince playing for VfL Bochum ... they also have a few Norwegian players with Tippeliga experience and now they have signed the above average attacking midifelder Danny Olsen from AGF, who is a bit past his prime, but still a highly experienced Superliga player..

... and then Hobro have made the clever move of signing two of the very best Helsingør players, the Danish.American creative midfielder Vito Hammershøy-Mistrati and their key centre back, Rasmus Minor Petersen, though they have no Superliga experience, it will cripple Helsingør in midfield and defense, while adding to the quality of their own team... By the look of their first two league games against Helsingør and AGF, they already seem to have adjusted to being back in the Superliga, but I doubt they will escape being among the teams in the relegation battle this season.

It seemed like more than a miracle when the part-timers FC Helsingør from the city of Elsinore, known abroad from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, managed to finish 3rd in the 1. Division and then also managed to eliminate Viborg in the Superliga play-off's, through a 1-1 draw at home and a 2-2 AET away result , scoring the decisive goal in the 112th minute ... a promotion, that according to their club management came much to soon for them to be able to adapt or become full-time professionals ...

Like Hobro, FC Helsingør also insist on playing some fairly nice short-passing and they have pledged not to change their style of play in the Superliga, though as part-time professionals with no money to sign experienced Superliga players, they are bound to get absolutely squashed if they do not take on a more physical and defensive minded approach .. but we will have to see...

As written, they have lost two of their very best players to Hobro and their former FCK and SønderjyskE defensive midfielder, Morten Bertolt, has retired, while they have not been able to sign a single Superliga player to reinforce their team..... Instead they have been picking up players on free transfers from the Danish 1. Division and the young winger Adnan Mohammad from a 2nd level Norwegian club, though he also has a bit of Superliga experience .. it will be more than a miracle if Helsingør do not finish dead last in the Superliga, with no chance of escaping relegation ...

It's funny to see how the Danish Superliga clubs seem to follow the same path when signing foreign players ... it used to manly be players from Sweden, Norway, Brazil, Nigeria and Ghana ... but now the tide and trend has turned, though Swedish players are still the most popular signing... but we suddenly see more players from Iceland, Eastern Europe, but also Germany (from 3 last season to 8 this season so far) .. actually there are now only a few less Germans than there are Swedish players in the Superliga .. Sweden and Norway have more players in the Superliga so far this season, Germany is 3rd while Serbia, Iceland and Finland share the 4th place... and then comes The Czech Republic, Ghana and Nigeria.

Brøndby's coach, Alex Zorniger has been an important factor towards the movement of German and also previously Bundesliga based players towards the Superliga. He's been taking advantage of past experience and connections at Stuttgart and RB Leipzig to recruit players like Jan Kliment, Zsolt Kalmar and Anthony Jung on a manageable budget and who should be able to contribute nicely. Someone else like Besar Halimi is a small but skilled player and could also be a positive addition

København might still have an advantage due to their greater financial ability. But I think this is a season where Brøndby has worked to close the gap between clubs. Although, defence might be an area where they can still improve. Competition should be quite close to watch.

Well ... the problem is that when Brøndby are able to sign a Swedish U21 international like Simon Tibbling and AGF the former Ajax attacking midfielder Tobias Sana, it's because they are not playing much because they are in dispute with their club and coach, so that they can be signed fairly cheaply, while FCK just sign the Cypriot 2016-17 'Player of the Year' Pieros Sotiriou from APOEL Nicosia, because they have the money and are able attract a player in top shape due to playing CL or EL group stage every season ... and so, even if FCK are in terrible shape, Pieros Sotiriou score twice against Randers, while it will take time for Brøndby and AGF to get Tibbling and Sana in top shape again.

@Ceres, what's up with aalborg? i thought they were one of the usual contenders in the superliga, but they've struggled for the last couple seasons. they've made a slow start again this year. i don't have time to invest in watching them, but i follow their results very casually. it seems they've been stinking it up for the last few years.

Two main reasons ... first and most importantly, just as Alex Ferguson was irreplaceable at United, you could say exactly the same about the now retired AaB director of sport Lynge Jakobsen ... as highly respected in Denmark for his tireless work at AaB since the mid 90's as Ferguson was in England ... All-powerful in his position, nothing would happen at AaB unless Lynge Jakobsen made it happen, but he retired at the end of the 2013 season (at the very same time Ferguson retired at United btw) ..

Secondly ... AaB is not a rich club by Danish standards ... their budget is average at best and as you may have noticed, they have been selling players for more than $9 million the past few seasons, while only spending around $1 million of this money to buy replacements, so their new Director of sport Allan Gaarde is neither as all-powerful or too popular among the fans, because they think he is too cheap, spending much too little on replacements and also far from as good at his job as Lynge was.

While it's no surprise that FCK is nowhere near as strong this year as they were last (although even in the spring they were more coasting to the championship on the point deficit and the fact that others wasn't chaining winning streaks, more so than they playing brilliantly) I'm still surprised just how poorly they've gotten out into this years season ... as it looks now they'll be at a measly 5 points for 5 matches after todays match

Yes ... FCK went from being the strongest and most defensively solid team they have ever had, to now only being slightly above average ... they are a victim of their own success last season, forcing them to keep promises they had made to their key players, that they would sell and let them go, if there were good offers from the bigger leagues.

In reality FCK do not need to sell any players, but to keep or find very good players, FCK are forced to make promises and also keep their promises... usually they try not to sell more than one key player at a time, but the loss of Delaney in central midfield, Matthias "Zanka" in central defense, left-back Ludwig Augustinsson and Cornelius, was too much and has really crippled them .. not least because key right-back Peter Ankersen also has been long-term injured, so that they have more or less changed the entire defense, the loss of an experienced midfield-engine like Delaney is also obvious and the lack of creative skills in attack is also showing with Rasmus Falk being long-term injured. He was sigened to replace Nikolai Jørgensen when he was sold to Feyenoord, but now that Falk is out, they simply lack the needed creative skill to create opportunities and really open up a defense....

It's not that they do not have the right players, except perhaps for a better Delaney and Matthias "Zanka" replacement, but they are either injured or newly signed and still trying to adapt...

With so many core players either transferred to foreign leauges or having signed up on the long-time injury list, I'm at a point where I'm legit not convinced that FCK is the primary contender for the title this year. Sure I'd still be surprised if they won't be able to fight for medals, but I don't think gold is theirs to lose

Ståle Solbakken has said that they were just about to sign their former Icelandic centre back Ragnar Sigurðsson from Fulham and he was all ready to sign, but then Rubin Kazan suddenly made him an offer that was around 4 times better after taxes than FCK was able to offer ( I suspect $2.5 million income-tax-free a year) ... but he has also said that they are going shopping, if they qualify for the CL group stage ... not only because they then are going to have more money to spend, but just as importantly because playing CL makes it much easier to attract the kind of players who otherwise would rather move to one the big leagues.

The Danish Superliga table after match day 11. Nordsjælland, Midtjylland, and Brøndby are in the Top 3 at the moment in those respective places.

After FCK's slow start, they have gradually caught up and are now only within 5 points of first place.
