DAN JAMES GOAL !!!! @Cymru pic.twitter.com/tpprPbAWp6— TheWelshDragon 🏴🐉 (@TheWelshDragon9) September 9, 2019 James on the scoreboard again, this time with Wales. Should only boost his confidence even more and would be most welcome if he can keep this up with United.
Daniel James, United's shining light in attack. https://www.skysports.com/football/...rying-manchester-uniteds-attack-at-the-moment
i know he was signed as a prospect and for £17.5 → £20m or whatever but he may already have been worth it. i expected him to get sub minutes against tired legs but he's proven quite useful thus far. long may it continue
He's definitely already worth it. I'm amazed how well he's adapted, he's been played in all kinds of positions and roles and he hasn't been found wanting. He's a LW but he's the only player we have who recognises how RW should be played as a right footer.
His winning free-kicks and pens will be a big asset, especially when we improve our options at set-piece delivery. Very hard player to defend against without giving away some free-kicks.
Been good so far but let's pump the brakes on that kind of claim. And let's see if he can remain consistent for the whole season. Hasn't been all that in the past 2 games already. Whether it's nothing but a short blip or a preview of what's to come remains to be seen. Certainly does not need that kind of pressure anyhow...

Who still wants Sancho ? James has done well and has potential to be a great winger and can play either side of wing and for me a left footed RWF should be our priority instead of Sancho.
Why? Sancho scores a lot of goals from the right, stretches the play because he is capable of going wide, and generates a lot of assists. AWB isn't going to be a creator, so we need to offset that with chances created for our striker and LW. The only real reason not to want Sancho is his price and concerns about his behaviour at BVB this season. Him being right footed is not in any way a disadvantage to us.
The right footed RW isn't an issue if they can score from there. Sancho's G+A from RW is excellent. He's also creative. There's very little chance we can get him, but if there's any chance at all, we have to go for it. James has done ok and he's a tidy player, but we have 3 front line options for 3 attacking positions and then kids as backup. We need more depth. Sancho starting at RW means James is first rotation player on the right and the left and an impact sub. If we don't get Greenwood minutes at 9 enough that he's useful in that area, then we need a 9 as well.
Ehhh.. not really. Output has been low for his minutes. He'd have a couple more assists, but he hasn't been above average given the opportunities he's had. I think he's surpassed expectations but that's not to say he's been good enough for what we require. Promising to be sure, but so far, just ok.
His output has been much better than ok given the side he's been playing in and the roles he has been playing within those sides. He has played as a LW, a striker in a 2 and a RW. He played several games with Rashford as a lone 9, who was demonstrably terrible in that role for us. There were several cases of James putting a great ball across the six yard box and Rashford being nowhere near it, having not made any sort of run, near post or far. Similarly for James making good supporting runs and not being used in favour of a very low xG shot. (You can see the impact of having Martial in the lineup when you look at his stats from the right compared to the left.) Since James made his debut, Utd have scored 12 non-penalty goals in the league. James has a league G+A of 5. And this is not to mention penalties / free kicks in dangerous areas won, defensive contribution, movement off the ball etc. I don't think anybody who has looked at the numbers and watched the games would say James has only been ok. That's unnecessarily harsh for the sake of being contrarian.
Output is output. He's been ok. 5 G+A in a quarter season means 20 g+a over a season. For an attacker, that's not "much better than ok!" However, it is more than I'd have pegged him for when the transfer was made, which is what I said. He's exceeded expectations, but that doesn't mean he's good enough to start for us week in week out.
Don’t focus on stats so much, they don’t always tell the whole story. It’s been mentioned on here that James has a knack for drawing pens or fouls in advantages positions. If we score from those situations but the foul is just as important as a pass to Rashford that he bangs in but he doesn’t get the assist for the foul.
And that's just one example of the huge gaps you have to account for when looking at stats. If you're taking an 'output is output' mindset then you're only doing a third of the job. Charles Reep had an 'output is output' mentality and look at the damage that did to English football.
