I'm not sure. I saw him on Comedy Central and he was O.K., but not rip-roaring funny. He seems to draw huge crowds.
When I first heard his act I thought it was kind of funny but it got old QUICK. Now I can't stand the guy. As opposed to Carlos Mencia, whom I've always hated. How he got a tv show is beyond me.
He's not as funny as Dave Atell and he's not as annoying as Gilbert Gottfried. He's the vanilla ice cream of comics.
To me Dane Cook has been a rollercoaster. I liked his first comedy central special. I thought it was funny and I taped it in my stand up collection. Then his Cd was big and I bough it. Though it was OK. But what I really appreciated was the fact that at the time, it was huge and the biggest selling comedy CD since Steve Martin. The reason was that a couple of weeks before the biggest thing in comedy was Larry the Cable Guy and his CD was at the time the biggest selling CD since Steve Martin and it was a threatening to be that way as he was getting coverage from Rolling Stones. I think Larry the Cable guy is total shit and to me this was just a tragedy. Plus he got into it with David Cross, which to me is the greatest comedian out there, and that just made it even worse. It was a weird parallel world. It was as if Messi or Kaka suddenly start feuding with Lucas Castroman on who is a better soccer player but with a majority of people thinking it was Castroman. To me it was a low point. Then Dane Cook came and it deflated the movement a lot becuase he took all that credit and until that point, it wasn't that bad. I rather had cook get the fame than larry (and still do eventhough I hate him now). Then of course came the backlash and the fact that all this fans that had bought cd's and become cook fans were really into him and he was becoming totally overrated. People really thought he was great and a genius and not just a tiny step above mediocre as he should have been considered. All those annoying fans came out in full force and showed that they were really big idiots about comedy. Then all the fame came and he was upshadowing performances. To me the biggest example was that Comedy Central had a show on the Comedians of Comedy tour which had this four comics (Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, Brian Posehn and Maria Bamford) which to me were geniuses to begin with and show their travels. To me it was beyond awesome. And the same time HBO did the same with Cook's Tourgasm (Dane Cook and 3 of his buddies). To me that was the whole point because by comparision, it really showed how mediocre it all was. It was like was comparing Champions league matches to Armenian 1st division. It just showed you that this people were getting a lot more fame for a lot more inferior product. Finally the Dane Cook movement was huge and based on nothing. There were a lot of fans and he was selling arenas on material that didn't deserve it. This all led up to his stand up special that was Vicious Circle. It was crap. It really was his worst work (and you have to considerate that it wasn't even that good to begin with) and he was getting the most fan acclaim for it. I just remembered how Bigger and Blacker from when Chris Rock was the most talked about comedian and how it delivered and now to see this crap, that really sucked. Plus then all the talks about how he stole material from Louis C.K, another comedian that shouldn't be muttered in the same sentence as Cook. It just made me really hate the guy. Now the backlash against him is pretty big and I'm glad and he apparently has been slowed down because he made some movies that were total crap. So I'm hopeful that he will be slowed down and now I have turned my attention to a thing that is worse for comedy than Cook is which is Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer. I mean I saw their movie Date Movie and it was utter shit. Then I saw the trailer for their Epic Movie and I seriously think it was the worst trailer I've ever seen. It made me think the whole movie was worst than Date movie and after seeing how it got like 2% in Rotten Tomatoes, I was apparently right. And now they released Meet the Spartans, which I haven't seen the trailers or anything about it but apparently is the worst of the three and only had 1 good review in RT. And it was number 1 in the box office instead of Rambo. Suddenly Dane Cook isn't enemy number one, its these 2 guys. And Carlos Mencia.
Two thoughts: (Both pure conjecture) 1. The sophomore jinx. When his popularity came, it cam big and fast. So now he has to follow it up with new material. But he doesn't have time to do it right. There are tours, interviews, shows to tape. And his label (or whatever) wants him to rush new material out there. In comedy, that doesn't work. 2. I heard a comedian say once, in regard to going on Carson, that going on Carson killed a lot of comics. They could come up with 10 minutes of material or maybe a one hour show, but that was it. When they needed to come up with something new, they weren't able come up with quality jokes again. Like someone said, when he first came out, I thought he was fine, I laughed some. He had some shtick but wasn't over the top. I liked the thought of Christ Chex. In fact, I think he made people think "Christ Chex? I could've come up with that." Almost like he was making comedy approachable.
Ditto. Some of his stand up is kinda funny (what I've seen anyway), but his wild popularity now is completely baffling.
I hate him with a passion. He's not funny. I dont get it, hes like one of those people you meet that tries too hard to get a laugh outta you. Dave Attell, that guy is hilarious with out even trying. His funniest stuff IMO is when he just roams the streets on his insomniac show, and rolls it off the tongue. Same goes with guys like Dave Chappelle. He's hilarious too without really trying or having to get all loud and dumb about it.
You know the all-time greats when you hear them. Carlin's like 70 yrs. old and the guy can still take everyday words and sayings and put entirely new spins on them. He just has that knack of looking at things in entirely unique ways. Dane Cook isn't a pimple on Carlin's rearend.
I watched "Waiting" last night. Thought it was a pretty funny movie. Cook didn't have a huge part but the scenes he was in were pretty good.
Its funny, cooke stinks. The spanish guy did it for me, the cook always playing that puerto rican role. LOL At him trying to get a handjob at his uncles funeral.
There's a repeat of a concert on Comedy Central tonight. Just inane mugging and run-of-the-mill observations. NF
I was a big fan of his at the beginning, but as his fame grew his talent seemed to diminish. I haven't watched much since, and Employee of the Month wasn't worth the film it was printed on. The Comedians of Comedy tour doesn't even belong in a comparison with Tourgasm. That's like comparing Manchester United and Scunthorpe United. CoC was amazing. Bear in a wheelchair: "I've been Bear-alyzed".
i'm pretty sure that i would hate anyone who likes dane cooks Tourgasim over Patton's/Brian's/Zach's/maria's Comedians of Comdey
