OK so things were running smoothly with my google toolbar. It blocked pop ups like a dream. But a few days ago I started getting them again. I uninstalled and installed the toolbar and i still get popups.

I run ad-aware frequently but that still doesn't help.

Anybody have any idea as to why they get by the blocker?

I assume your're using IE. Get rid of it and install Mozilla (open source version of Netscape). Make it your default browser. It has a nice built in pop up blocker that works like a champ. Another nice feature is tab-browsing which lets you open multiple windows within the browser for different sites. You can then jump back and forth between them by simply hitting the appropriate tab.

    Download from here:
    http://www.mozilla.org

    Enjoy :)

Agreed, for PC's the best browsers are the Mozilla browsers. At work I have Firebird set up as my default browser. It blocks pop ups like a charm.

Here's what they have on their FAQ page.

Mozilla (Application Suite) is a complete suite of web related applications, such as a browser, a mail/news client, a chat client and much more. Mozilla Firebird is just a browser, which makes it a better choice if you already have a mail client for example. Also, since Mozilla Firebird is smaller than the whole Mozilla suite, it's faster and easier to use.

Note, though, that Mozilla Firebird is not just the standalone Mozilla browser. The user interface in Mozilla Firebird differs from Mozilla in many ways. For example, Mozilla Firebird has customizable toolbars.

I prefer the stand alone firebird browser because it's light, fast and has the extra features. If you want an integrated suite (mail client, newsreader, browser) go with the standard mozilla. Both are good. Enjoy :)

I would also recommend Firebird. Nice interface and customizable. It's a quick broswer too.

Don't forget that you'll have to reinstall Flash, Shockwave and maybe even Java.

Another vote for Firebird, for my money the best browser out there.

I use Mozilla at work, but still use MyIE2 at home (because I'm too lazy, and don't want to install Mozilla/reinstall Flash/Shockwave/Java/whatever else is necessary). I like Mozilla, but there are still issues with how it handles tabbed browsing that I don't like. There may be configuration settings to change that, but I haven't discovered them yet.

I use Opera and I love it. Never really get affected by pop-ups but I never really did anyways.

BTW, does anyone have a good site that outlines the differences in the CSS implementation on the major browsers? I'm getting really frustrated getting something looking dope in one browser, but having all the positioning and sh!+ break on another.

I realize it's probably mostly due to IE's funked up CSS model, but that's what most people use, and I still need things to look right in Mozilla...

Mozilla rocks! Particularily the latest version, 1.5

Thanks to Mozilla, I never use the piece of crap Internet Explorer any more, even when using Windows.

You'd be better off downloading it from the Sun website. They are the inventors and caretakers of Java and their Java Virtual Machine is more up to date and efficient and universally compatible. Due tot he legal spats between Sun and MS, the MS JVM is out of date and contains MS proprietary hooks.

I second that vote for Opera. I've never used a better browser.

The "mouse gestures" are what really hooked me. Makes navigating so much easier.

Only problem is that there are still some glitches with some javascript stuff... but they'll probably work it out eventually.

So. I've been using mozilla. Gotta say it's not faster. Love the tabed browsing. But its giving me issues with videos.
And with flash even though i reinstalled it. Installed it into the mozilla plugins folder. doesn't work
