Dallas - San Jose (Saturday, 6/14) during-game/postgame thread [R] Instead of the usual commentary, I will go with ratings this week. Mullan: 8 MOTM, no question about it. Was a terror, absolutely gave Dallas fits. For those who questioned his ability to handle the ball, watch the first 10 minutes again, he had some wonderfull touches on the ball. If he ever becomes consistent with his ball striking, he would be something else. Lagos: 5 I found him hard to rate. He did some nice things, but did some awful things as well. Alvarez: 6 Showed some class plays, and a nice finish. Also points for slamming Suarez to the ground, showed toughness that I dont think enough "class" players do. Corrales: 6 Started to see him shake off the rust/injury bug this week, and started to show some really nice play. Russel: 5.5 Was involved in some nice combinations, and tracked back well, but nothing special. Mulrooney: 5.5 Quietly solid performance. Dunivant: 7 Best left back in MLS going forward, and he showed it this game. An almost goal and an assist, and always looking dangerous going forward. Played solid defensively Agoos: 4.5 Honestly, he scared the crap out of me back there. Twice he left the back seriously exposed. He is carrying an injury, so dont take this as an "Agoos is crap" comment. Just in this game, he was brutal. Hes fine when the back 4 is flat, but when the outside backs push up Waibel: 5.5 Average. Was partly at fault for the goal, but got back well on a couple of other occaisions. Overall I rate it solid if unspectacular. Roner: 5 He has a lot of potential, but I think this game showed that he needs to get better at reading the game. Onstad: 6.5 Made a critical save, and seemed to control his box well.
Incredible that we pulled off the win... all bow to Yallop. Mullan for MOTM. We desperately need this new Abbey referee for home games. That field is an offense against soccer, I wish the Burn a rapid reconstruction.
I am in awe (just as Arturo was) at the Alvarez goal. It was a great cross in from Mullan. It looked as though it was going to fall by Walker, and I think that may have caught the Burn defense's attention for just long enough, so Arturo could send home a beautiful goal. A great win for us. BTW, it was nice to hear portions of the game over the radio (in English.) It's good to know that the broadcasts will be on, when I'm not at home.

What I meant was that those kinds of incorrect calls happen, you have to figure they will even out over the long haul. Its not the kind of blatant obvious crap like the non-call against Chicago, which was just inexcusable.
I agree. He's got to be some coach to be able to take, like Albany said, a "walking wounded" team and motivate them enough to play with all their heart and pull off this win. It's amazing. How does he do it? But with apparently great coaching aside, of course the final credits go to the guys on the field. Only thing I didn't like about this game were the 3 yellow cards and not because I didn't think they were not deserved, but because I like a bit cleaner game. I hate to see reckless play no matter who's doing it. That was a beauty of a goal by Mullan and Alvarez! GO QUAKES!!
What can I say? That game was so satisfying, I forgot to notice the football lines after a while. What a game! Alvarez is crafty and a stud. 17? Scary. Waibel was solid....solid! Can't believe I just said that. Great comeback. So proud of the guys. But, hey, that was no yellow on Alvarez? Shoulder charge was totally legal and he legally rocked Suarez's world. That was the most enjoyable play of the game. I think Suarez has talent, but the thinks he's waaaaaay better than he really is. Althought I generally like him, Suarez is a punk sometimes. Anyway, looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say.
a key 3 points to back atop the West.... Alvarez showed alot more confidence...maybe he should go overseas and beat up on the French kids a few more times.... the down side is Lagos....that can simply cannot shoot....two of the weakest attempts on goal by a prefessional I have ever seen....almost laughable.... now on to LA and stop their run of dodgy penalties in their new shed....... First, many thanks to Yallop for being such a damn fine coach. Only Bradley could pull off something like this with all the injuries (in fact he has), and this has probably been Frank's greatest test since he's been coach. We all doubted before the season started but he has this team (even when at its lowest point yet) motivated, playing together, and hustling when there seemed to be no point. Fantastic job! Second, alot of players really impressed and a couple did not. Certainly, Alvarez, Mullan, and Dunivant really impressed. Dunivant's only major gaff was when he failed to mark Kreis (or was it Martinez/Vaca?) properly when Jason took that shot off the post. But Mullan and Alvarez played their hearts out, and what a cross and finish on that last goal! On the other hand, Mulrooney and Agoos looked like they were playing hurt. Both played relatively solid, but their injuries really exposed them. The same goes for Ramiro. Manny does not impress at all. He's winded, and I've been saying this for three weeks, but he needs to be rested. Third, the win was great, but alot of us seem to overlook the fact that for large stretches the team just looked flat tonight. Mullan was working his butt off but the rest of the team really seemed to struggle on both sides of the ball for many stretches of the game (and this includes everybody sans Mullan really - and maybe even him too.) There's work to be done still but this is a great result; it gets the team's confidence back going into next Wednesday's match at Victoria Street, and it must give Yallop a little more breathing room. P.S. Did anyone else laugh when they saw Dallas' available substitution list, and about ten guys all warming up at once?
...with our one good leg!!!!! Wahoo!!!!! What a great f***ing win!!! We may have harped on Mullan for some poor shots on goal earlier in the season but he sure earned the MOTM tonight. What a terrific testimonial that good things happen if you just HUSTLE! My only disappointment about this game was that most of the match our guys didn't seem to WANT the ball on most 50/50s. Seemed like every time there was a free ball at midfield, we'd peel off it and fall back. Still, don't want to tarnish a great result on a fine evening. Alvarez.....remarkable! He exceded my wildest expectations tonight. Superbly talented young man. Sure glad he's on our side. IMO, if he keeps getting minutes and opportunities to mature his game, he's got a great chance to become our franchise in a few years (assuming that Landon does eventually decide to pursue Europe. If he doesn't, we are REALLY sitting pretty!!!) After the display of effort by the rookies I have seen the last few weeks, I officially retract ANY disparaging remarks I may have made about Yallop's drafting ability. Alvarez, Dunivant, Walker...all have shone brightly under some intense pressure--the team really is counting on them to contribute and they have. HUGE 3 points tonight. Now, it's on to Carson to visit our water and try to reclaim first place!! G0 QUAKES!!!
BTW.... Upon further review by the TiVo replay official in the booth... Kreis was offside on the Dallas goal. A great angle of that replay of the goal reveals that Kreis was ahead of the defenders from the time Pareja pushed the pass to Gbandi and never got back on. He was close, but still half a man ahead of Waibel the whole time. Thank the good Lord it didn't cost us.
Exactly! And don't forget that we all bemoaned Frank's decision to pass on one Second Round choice to pick up Mullan...
I believe that was Agoos. Dunivant was pushed up field on the attack prior to that play, as Dallas played a quick ball forward. That means Kreis has a lot of space to work on Agoos, and he almost made Agoos pay.
Okay thanks for the clarification. I remember Onstad yelling at someone and I thought it was Agoos, but when I checked again I could have sworn it was Dunivant who had been hustling back and got burned. Either way, there were two defenders involved on that play and both got burned by Kreis.
I was L'ing MAO when they played the theme from M*A*S*H when the Dallas trainer came on the field in the second half. That should be our team song.

The biggest positive I'll take away from this match is that for the first time from 8 appearances Onstad showed a little fire in directing the backline. I thought he'd been a bit too passive in the early going, but I think he's getting more comfortable with his surroundings and is beginning to take charge.
We were screaming about that when it happened, and, yep, you're right it's great it didn't cost the Quakes. Onstad scared me a couple times, but the chances he took worked out, lucky for SJ. Sucks LA won their match, but then again I guess in this case it's okay since SJ was trailing KC.
I noticed that too, especially when Dunivant and Goose failed to pick up Kreis, boy was he pissed! And that was a pretty sight to behold. Finally. Goosport, always the self-promoter huh?
