D.C. United - 7,055 Season Tickets Sold (DCU Record)

CHANTILLY, VA - D.C. United announced today that the club’s season ticket sales for the 2003 season have surpassed the all-time record mark of 7,046, established in 2001. United has now sold 7,055 season tickets. The mark currently leads Major League Soccer and marks the sixth time in seven years that D.C. That's real good for D.C. Think if they started to win they would really sell some tickets. They have a good following.

It's actually an amazing number given they haven't made the playoffs in, what?, 3 seasons? Someone's still doing a great job in the sales office at DC despite the departure of Payne a year or two ago.

    Well done.

    7,055 season tix x 15 matches x $15 average = $1.6 million.

It's probably more like 18 games x $20 x 7055 (about $2.5 million) because full season tickets include three special games (the first being the Spurs game). I expect that most season tickets are along the side lines where season ticket prices range from $18-$27 per game. The cheapest season tickets in the house are $13 per game along the end line.

For a team that can't win at home, can't score at home, and hasn't made the playoffs in three years (where 8 of ten teams made the playoffs last year!), breaking a record is a real accomplishment. Chalk it up the the sales staff and the effort they've made to build an audience at the grass roots level.

DC United has become a fixture in the Post and Times, gets coverage of its games on the local sports (even for the Spurs exhibition), and now even has english language radio to go along with the spanish broadcasts. Off the field, DC United has done quite well. Now if they could only win some friggin' games.

    :)

There was a great atmosphere in the Tottenham Hotspur game (and that was a Wednesday night game).

Most likely STEs. I do wonder if this number includes sponsor comps and the like.

But a great show by the United sales team all the same. It's nice to see the core fanbase growing despite our minor *ha* dip in form.

The term "sponsor comps" is often a misnomer. Unless it's a straight trade for services, and the sponsor is actually providing cash, the value of the tickets is often included in the price of the sponsorship, making those tickets paid for, though not in the traditional way.

In other words, just because they go to a sponsor doesn't necessarily make them comps.

$2.5 million is more than the team's salary cap!

Now if you could just get away with not paying for anything else, you'd be fine.

It's still nice to see that a team's revenues from season ticket sales exceeds the team's salary cap.

I don't think DC is over the salary cap by $0.8 million.

I don't think the numbers are as simple as the basic algebra you're basing your assumption on.

DC has several levels of season tickets, you don't know how many of each (Mezzanine, VIP, Premium, Spectator, Adult/Youth) were sold, whether they're full Season Tickets or STE's (where two half-seasons equal a full Season Ticket) or Flex Plans. You don't have the numbers.

I'm sure DC United generates decent revenue from tickets, they always have had one of the best sales staffs in the league. But you don't have the numbers.

True. However, the consider the $20/ticket estimate (not mine) reasonable. In fact, I'm certain that $20 is within + or - 10% of the actual weighted average number (it has to be based on their rate card).

That assumes you have believed every word from MLS HQ about losses.

Also, I think the $20/seat average is perfectly reasonable. For fun, plug in a $15 average. See what that gets you.

So we've set season ticket records in KC / DC / and LA I imagine. Columbus doesn't do to badly.

Yet attendance is down, way down, even allowing for Dallas and Chicago. I know its early, but its been a bit disappointing.

I think its ludicrous that the US v Portugal game is being cancelled on account of a beer sign board. MLS could use the attendance boost. We only have 2 July 4th games this year.

I don't know if it will be possible, but I hope MLS and the WWC can set up some doubleheaders. They did it last time, right? MLS needs the attendance padding. MLS is courting investors and cities. Attendance is image. They will want to know the attendance. Hemming and hawing about Dragon stadium and Naperville will just be fast-talking.
