hey i am going to a party with several czech foreign exchange students, i woudl lke to be able to have conversations on football----could you give me some conversation starters, maybe, famous teams, famous moments, star players, etc. in czech football past and present...thank you.
Just say that Sigma Olomouc is the best team in the Czech Republic and see if they have an reactions. The most famous team is Sparta Prague (or Praha in Czech) and then Slavia in my opinion. Jan Koller is a decent Czech player who is currently with Dortmund. Milan Baros is an up and coming player with Liverpool. Petr Cech <sp> is the best young keeper in the Czech Republic. Before the season he was transferred from Sparta Praha to Rennes in France. There are currently four teams in the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup (Liberec, Sparta Praha, Viktoria Zizkov, and Slavia Praha). Just go to uefa.com to see how they are doing after the first leg. In my opinion a problem with the Czech league is that many of the top players leave the Czech Republic to go play in a foreign league. This wasn't the case before the 1996 Euro finals (Czech vs Germany). After this the rest of Europe really started to take notice of young Czech players. However, with this being said, Karl Poborsky came back to the Czech Republic this year to play with Sparta Praha. He is one of the top players in the league. I don't know too much about Czech football in the past, because I have only been following it for the last five years or so. To say hello in Czech just say 'dobry den'. You could always break the ice by attempting to say some thing in Czech. They should appreciate the effort. Just search for a site about the Czech language to learn how to say a few basic words.
