Cyprus Cup- Women´s internationals´tournament Group A: France England South Africa Scotland Group B Holland Russia Canada New Zealand Match-days: 5, 7, 10, 12. ---------------------------------------------- Canada is off to a good start in its first training camp under newly-appointed head coach Carolina Morace. The team is currently training in Los Angeles, CA, its first camp since last year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing, China. The team begins a new era next month when it takes part in the 2009 Cyprus Cup under coach Morace. “We are in the initial stages of training and introducing our new methodology of playing,” said Morace. “The players are excited, enthusiastic and they are responding well to the new training. The players have not played for many months, so we are working to form a team that will be looking to win.” Canada is the defending Cyprus Cup champion from last year’s event in March 2008. This time around, Canada faces New Zealand (5 March), Netherlands (7 March) and Russia (10 March) in group action. The final is set for 12 March against the top team from the opposite group (France, England, South Africa or Scotland). http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3504
Canada names roster for Rome camp pre-Cyprus Cup: http://canadasoccer.com/news/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3512 They heard about Corky Julien of James Madison after all. Wonder why she wasn't with the U-20s last year.
For those interested in that sort of thing there are journal entries from the Canadian camp from players Rhian Wilkinson (rhianwilkinsonsoccer.com), Amy Walsh (amywalsh.com) and Karina Leblanc (karinaleblanc.com).
Probably because she didn't embrace the "NTC" program and continued with hockey. She probably saw Bryan Poison-feld for what he is .... and besides, the Fury program is a quality program. I hear Morace will be introducing many new and talented players to the WNT program. Can't wait to watch the CSA cringe while these new players make the EP & Bridge flock look pedistrian and ordinary.
Does anyone know if the Canadian NCAA players will join the team in Cyprus, in particular S. Schmidt of Portland, K. Lang of UCLA, and J. Filigno of Rutgers?

Just out of curiosity then CAFAN, do you not find it at least slightly disturbing that a kid like Corky Julien was never even brought into camp at the youth team levels but all of a sudden appears out of nowhere and seems to be hanging with the full team? How many other kids were there out there during the Pellerud era that are long gone and moved on to other things that could have been a contributor? There isn't any excuse especially at the National Team level for not getting out there and holding mini camps in different parts of the country to get players looked at. Isn't that the coaches job? Scouting for the best possible talent and trying to cook up as competitive an environment as possible where no one's job is safe? If nothing else I already like Morace for getting out there, and getting new blood in and looked at. Take away the arguments over playing style, any time you have a situation where players at the national team level essentially have a free ticket on the team for 2 years, I don't think that is healthy in any way shape or form. I'll be interested to see how this Canadian team looks at this tournament.
CSA announces final roster for Cypress cup http://www.canadasoccer.com/news/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3528 On the list are 3 players not at the California camp. Christina Julien Alyssa Lagonia Shannon Woeller Add Kelly Parker, a player at the California camp but not previously associated with EP's kick ball team. That's 4 new players added to the program. I've seen Julien, Parker and Woeller play and they will make a valuable contribution to the program. Julien will compliment Sinclair, both are poachers. Parker can open up space, a good touch and sees/reads the game very quickly. Woeller has the u20 experience, a decent steady defender. A decent start with a new coach. Hopefully they'll push and pressure the vets for playing time.
Nothing wrong with being optimistic, but here's the thing - 4 new players and a new coach don't mean squat to me. The new players haven't even shown they can play at the senior international level, so it's way too early to get excited. As for the coach, Carolina's record with the Italian Women's team was underwhelming to say the least - not even remotely close to Pellerud's record with Canada, never mind his record with Norway. Ultimately, it's all just hype until I see Canada go farther in the WWC or Oly's than under EP - and that's a very tall order for an unproven coach in a backwater soccer nation like Canada.
I do understand your skepticism, though I'm curious to know what exactly Italy would be classified as in the world of women's soccer if you classify Canada as a backwater soccer nation. I'm not saying CM is going to be huge improvement to Canadian soccer--only time will tell that--but having seen the state of the women's game in Italy I would tend to be less critical of her based solely on her results there.
Half time results : Canada - New Zealand 1-1 England - South Africa 3-0 France - Scotland 0-0 Netherlands - Russia 1-2
Final scores: Canada - New Zealand 1-1 England - South Africa 6-0 France - Scotland 2-0 Russia - Netherlands 1-2
Surprising to see England put 6 past South Africa. England is not an attacking side at all. 2-0 vs Scotland is a good result apparently the Scots did play the British football way , I am flying tomorrow to Cyprus to see us trying to spank Hope Powell charges
Very direct with long balls flying over the midfielders...The good old British way that you still find in lower division of English football aka route 1 football.
CSA game report on New Zealand game: http://www.canadasoccer.com/tourney/FIFA_WWC/game_profile.asp?gameId=1711 I think these are the first full international caps for Julien, Lagonia and Stewart.
Is there any way of finding out the names of previous players of (Canada's senior women's team) scoring a goal on their first cap as Christina Julien did for team Canada today at the Cyprus Cup on their opening game against New Zealand ?
Funny, because I think of that as the American way, as most beautifully demonstrated in the U20 WWC: loooooooong ball => Leroux => goal. And the Swedish way, now that you mention it. And the Norwegian...
USA add skills and grace to the route 1 football, not the usual scramble for second balls. It has more to do with a tactical weapon than a lack or creativite ball on the floor footie.
^ +1 Optimism is all we've got..... 4 new players and a new coach IS a good start. Time will tell! After all, we are still talking about the CSA, where incompetency and ineptitude knows no boundaries. Backwater is generous.
