This is getting more ridiculous. The Knights Templar who supported Lumpy In ‘16, ‘20 and ‘24 (and who are rather right wing, what with being both anti-semitic and anti-islamic) have issued a strongly worded statement about his Jesus post.

A sitting US president gets into a slanging match with the Knights Templar? FFS, this is getting into Monty Python territory now.

    What a weekend!

    Liverpool win a game.
    Rory wins the Masters.
    Orban get das boot.

With respect to the third, is it possible we have passed peak populism?

To be fair, that is actually possible on the basis it is likely he has no idea of what a religious artwork might look like?

I was kinda wondering the same. The word will be made flesh of course if there’s a House and Senate Blue Wave in November. Looking that way, but no guarantees. But populism as politics certainly isn’t on the wane, but I will grant it might be halting.

You still have Meloni in Italy, Modi in India, Fico in Slovakia. There are local (read state) elections in the U.K. in May, let’s see how that f.ucking idiot Farage does. Le Pen is still lurking in France and AFD hasn’t gone away in Germany. So a few more dominoes will have to fall before we can call it a trend.

But I do think people are beginning to understand that bumper sticker slogans are no substitute for policy, nor a way to run a country.

Some hiccups with her relationship with Trump. Hard for an Italian PM to side with someone pretending to be Jesus and criticising the Pope.

I think it's still just anti-establishment. People aren't happy with the world currently and are taking it it out on the people in power. In Hungary the establishment is a right win populist so he gets the boot. But in France and Britain the governments are generally center left neo liberals which is the perfect breeding ground for the right wing populists so still expect big gains for Reform and the National Front.

Having said that Trump is a negative for them at the moment. He will make some populist curious types think twice It's less the policies themselves and more incompetency in implementing them. But I still think the primary emotion worldwide is "throw the bums out".

Yeah, I think that’s a huge part of it, throw the bums out. A huge part of that sentiment is fostered by the appearance and the reality that the powers that be are lining their own pockets and giving their mates and donors tax breaks, while the average Joe is a paycheck away from disaster and, in the US, an infection away from bankruptcy.

I would take issue however, with the notion that the U.K. has been run by center left neoliberals. Since 2010, the UK has been run for 14 of 16 years by Thatcherite right wing acolytes who have bent over backwards to endow as much money as possible on their people. They were the ones who brought us Brexit. The National Front have long since ceased to be a force in UK politics and the Reform Party is nothing more than a haven for Tories who feel the Tory Party is too soft. With the exception of Farage, every single mainliner in Reform is an ex-Tory. Every one of them.

If you don't do what we want, we are going to obliterate your navy.

We're not doing what you want.

OK, we just obliterated your navy.

No you haven't, we still have ships!

We will send them to the bottom of the sea.

No, we will send YOUR ships to the bottom of the sea.

Noooooo, YOUR ships are the ones going to the bottom of the sea.

Oh no they're not, WE are sending YOUR ships to the BOTTOM of the sea ..........

I see the Orange Jesus is manipulating oil stocks again today - claiming Iran called him wanting a deal.

I admit it has been a good couple of days on some fronts, but let's all not forget the fact that we are still in the middle of generational ********up in terms of strategic mistakes with Iran. Russia still hasn't gone anywhere, and China seems to be eating up favors from countries disillusioned with US leadership left and right. Orban being ousted, and his acceptance of those election results is a very good thing, but it isn't exactly clear who his replacement will turn out to be - let's hope a unified EU is a possibility now, but there is no guarantee.

It also hasn't changed that the US and most western democracies still have a sizable population of working middle class people who have suffered on the altar of free enterprise for the last 30-40 years, and largely had the consequences of these policies on their livelihoods ignored. They are rightfully angry, and we urgently need to find out how to address these concerns before they yet again fall to an authoritarian populist who is marginally more effective a leader than Trump.

There is still a lot of work we all need to do, in our own little ways, to make things better.

As usually happens at the WH, a McDonalds delivery lady knocked on the outside door of the Oval Office yesterday.

Trump as is normal practice, answered it himself and took the bag with his order from her.

Then in accordance with well-established protocols, he talked with her for a few minutes about his policies - in particular the no-tax-on-tips - and stood with her addressing the media. Who happened to be standing nearby.

Good to see normalcy returning to politics.

he then almost "forgot" to give her a $100 tip to help her with the medical bills for her husband with cancer treatment and no insurance - why she has no insurance he didn't delve too deeply into, me thinks.....
probably because he was wondering did he really have to part with the Franklin.....

Vance is now lecturing the Pope on needing to "be careful" when discussing theology. That'll impress US Catholics.

An awful lot of Republicans and MAGA types telling the Pope how to Pope. Who are either not Catholics or have not been a Catholic for more than a New York minute.

Wonder who the first (famous) asshat is going to be who decrees that Popey needs to remember he’s American first and Pope second?

You start to see this tendency (in the last 20-30 years more than previously) of politicized Catholicism - whereby a certain type - call it the equivalent type to the Born Again protestant/Baptist type, if you will - want a higher authority which reflects the thinking of their lower (outside influenced) authority insofar as they intersect with politics. Seemingly incredulous of the idea that Catholicism is based indubitably on the directives of clerical higher authority...

As our resident heterodox theologian, I'm begging to think Vance doesn't know what Pope means or what Catholicism teaches.

    (Sarcasm alert)
