great post hubba. I'd like to say I share your cautious positivity about how this will all play out, but I really fear that the negative forces will push more and more "decent people" out of positions of positive influence through threats of violence.

not everyone in key government positions have the fortitude of a Kinzinger or a Liz Cheney, and the verbal violence and threats against them and their families is being seen at all levels of government these days (not just referring to the US, btw).

.... is what rises to the top of my worry list. using Ukraine as an example - that country will cease to exists as an independent entity a long time before the disinformation tide is corrected (if it ever is) and that won't be reversable.

 

Yup generally agree with hubba's analysis. The distorted social and corporate media landscape has led to the current level of polarization. Don't think it can be sustained - because so much of what is being put out there - by Trump and others - cannot be supported by facts (that is, its utter bullshit).

I think Canada, Mexico and Denmark could trump Trump with some counter-proposals. How about Canada takes New England, New York, the Great Lakes and Michigan for instance? And add in Florida for all the snow birds, Trump can lease back Mar-a-Lago. Sheinbaum was clever with the map play, but could follow it up with announcing plans to annex Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California and re-name it all Greater New Mexico. Fredericksen should simply suggest a territory swap - Greenland for Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.

Been listening to a podcast about the rise of the Franks and Charlemenge during the Early Middle Ages (Dark Ages), and the echo's are disturbing. No long term planning or sense of what is best for the whole. If you get power it's all about rewarding your faction and destroying the other.

And that's fair enough, that's the reality of the world, but we had a system that wasn't that for a little while. And for some reason I still can't grasp people threw it away because egg's cost too much.

 

I think you are right that humans tend to course correct eventually. But usually after periods of instability and violence. After the printing press we had a sustained period of religious wars throughout Europe. As you pointed out yellow Journalism helped create the conditions for the two World Wars. My concern is with Nuclear Weapons will we survive this current period of increased instability and violence that seems to be ahead of us?

I suspect if you like that, you’ll love Mike Duncan’s The History Of Rome. It’s a long ‘un, 193 episodes. But on many occasions there are so many direct correlations to modern day life and politics. When I wrapped, I felt I’d lost a friend.

 

it's difficult to grasp in one sense -

and not that difficult in the other. (If the powers that be in the 50s thru the 90s had seen the problems with the weaponized internet they would (maybe) have curtailed it into a Commerce with no Comment landscape. But, who can predict the future? - particularly when the future is devolved in stone madness.

Read some stupid bitch's comment on X recently about executing Gen. Milley as a traitor. These people's idiot minds have been poisoned. Actually poisoned. By the normal methodology of poisoning. Too much of any X (pun intended) substance. The word-vomit of Trump, bannon, or Alex Jones can poison just like arsenic

In the one sense-
The sense that we grew up in - which was moored in the rather stabilizing idea that intelligent analysis was of more importance than the gibbering of the massed rabble - and that there were informed intelligent people and reasonably working (maybe a bit too distorted by top-end power interests in the US compared to the rest of the media world) who would get things reasonably right and disseminate valid information and opinions (even ones in direct ideological conflict with one another) into the sub-strata which isn't equipped to correctly/sanely formulate these things as selectively for themselves. That "sense" is unfortunately gone into oxygen starvation under the overwhelming flood of stupidity that mobile social media has gifted us.
Thus, the recession that is not a recession, and the price of eggs and bananas masks the truth of the faces of people who have gone bananas

As I type - Pete Hegseth (could a figure be more ridiculously insulting to the population....ffs) sits, or was just sitting before a Senate panel to become leader of the Military. These republican senators from these backwaters are the real scum leading us to the Dark Ages

 

The podcast about the dark ages was from the a general history series called "The Rest is History" . It's part of Goalhanger productions which was actually founded by Gary Lineker.

And I love Mike Duncan's podcasts. I found the History of Rome during lockdown when my normal diet of football content disappeared. Plowed through the whole series during many a dog walk. Also like his "Revolutions" series.

 

So THAT's what people are listening to when they walk past you with earbuds on, and blank stares on their faces? And I thought they were just trying blot out society while listening to loud music...not educating themselves.
