Well this ain't the most complete press release: http://www.oursportscentral.com/release.cfm?releaseid=26112
OK, let's try to reverse-engineer the roster: GK(2): Beene, Greathouse D(5): Bryan, Alagich, Chastain, Lindsey, French M(6): Sissi, Pretinha, Venturini, Cook, Barr, Sanchez F(3): Katia, Clemens, Clark Reserves: Carter, Hendershot Does that sound about right?
Full release now up http://www.sjcyberrays.com/news/rel_20030324.html Nice job, Druid Squirrel. The official release lists the following 'Rays: Code: CYBERRAYS ACTIVE ROSTER NAME POS. NATIONALITY '02 COLLEGE/CLUB HOMETOWN Dianne Alagich D Australia CyberRays Adelaide, Australia Betsy Barr M USA Portland Granite Bay, Calif. LaKeysia Beene GK USA CyberRays Gold River, Calif. Thori Bryan D USA CyberRays Wake Forest, N.C. Brandi Chastain D/M USA CyberRays San Jose, Calif. Kim Clark F USA CyberRays Cupertino, Calif. Mandy Clemens F USA Phila. Charge San Diego, Calif. Ann Cook M USA Wash. Freedom Springfield, Mo. Michelle French D USA CyberRays Kent, Wash. Dawn Greathouse GK USA CyberRays Allen, Texas Katia F Brazil CyberRays São Paulo, Brazil Kelly Lindsey D USA CyberRays Omaha, Neb. Pretinha M Brazil CyberRays Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Keri Sanchez M/D USA Boston Breakers San Jose, Calif. Sissi M Brazil CyberRays São Paulo, Brazil Tisha Venturini-Hoch M USA CyberRays Newport Beach, Calif. RESERVE ROSTER Melinda Carter D USA South Carolina Plano, Texas Maren Hendershot F USA CyberRays Colorado Springs, Colo. No real surprises--pretty much how I called it in the other thread, except for flip-flopping Cook and Hendershot. I thought Carter might replace Nanez, but it was tough to tell from the one exhibition game I got to see. Now we get to see who our developmental players are going to be. That may be a really tough call. ---- On a semi-random note, it occurrs to me that the acquisition of Michelle French for what has turned out to be the loan of Ann Cook to the Freedom for one season has got to be one of the best "trades" ever...or at least it is in my book.
Re: Full release now up Plus Keri Sanchez gets to come home to the Bay Area, while Danielle Borgman gets a contract with her college hometown Courage. I'd say everyone pretty much landed on their feet now that the dust has settled. This means the developmental players will be Peters or Podhrasky and a field player. I'm guessing that will be Christina Bell or Megan Horvath, assuming they want the job.
No big surprises it seems. Some of the other teams pulled a few wth's on their rosters, but not us. I agree with leaving off Nanez, Bell and Horvath. Hendershot as a reserve works, also. Only 3 players completely new to the CyberRays, one is a rookie. That's got to be the lowest number in the league. Hopefully we will have chemistry as an early advantage over some of other teams.
Yeah, and that one rookie is a bomb. Betsy might be a starter, depending on the system they use this season. My choice for a line-up GK Beene D Sanchez, Bryan, Lindsey, French M Barr, Hoch, Sissi F Clemens, Katia, Brandi But I'm not the coach....
The competition has become fierce for spots, and this is the result. As noted, getting Cook means the deal for French has now become a "steal" for the Rays. Borgman isn't necessarily a loss, but having her released is a gain for the Courage. Net gain in Sanchez. With the exceptions of Nanez, Bell, Horvath, and the retired Dorn this is very much an intact team from 2002. Here's who should be projected for opening day: G: Beene D: Sanchez D: Bryan D: Lindsey D: French M: Chastain (please, please, please stick with the midfield/defense duties) M: Sissi M: Hoch M: Pretinha (or Barr) F: Katia F: Clemens Only Barr and Clemens are new so it looks like the team could compete, and mostly get back to the Founder's Cup game. Cheers!
