Which one do you think is better for MLS and MLS fans?

    Current Offside Rule:
The law states that a player is in an offside position if any of their body parts, except the hands and arms, are in the opponents' half of the pitch, and closer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent (the last opponent is usually, but not necessarily, the goalkeeper)

New offside Rule (Wenger offside rule) that FIFA is trialing: You're onside if any part of your body you can play the ball with is inline with the defender.

    This is currently offside.

But under the new offside rule, it would be onside

FIFA knows that more scoring is better for the game than less scoring. The game has competition from other sports as well as video games. A potential fan might play Call of Duty or Fornite instead of watching football due to the few number of goals per game. A more exciting product will bring more fans into the games...whether it is FIFA, MLS, Mexico Liga MX or Premier League.

There used to be a lot more scoring in the past.

The 3 highest scoring World Cup:

1954 WC: 5.38 goals per match
    1938 WC: 4.67
    1934 WC: 4.12

The 3 lowest scoring World Cup:

Italy 1990: 2.21 goals per match
    South Africa 2010: 2.23
    Germany 2006: 2.3

FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed the trial on Friday and spoke optimistically about the rollout.

He stated per Evening Standard: "When it comes to the offside law, with the change in the game, with the speed in the game, with also the introduction of VAR - which makes it clear when there is an offside and when there is not - without VAR, the referees were having the instructions in case of doubt, you let go.

"We have been seeing that maybe we can think about a new law which allows a bit more attack in football.

"And Arsene Wenger presented to us today as well what this could look like and obviously, in summary, it is if the attacking player is ahead of the last defender, or second-last player, but still with one part of the body that can score inline with the defender.

"So it is giving the attacking player a bit more room and so favouring attacking football. Obviously such a change would need to be tested. We have to see what kind of impact this will have on the game - if positive, if negative.

"If it is positive, we might go ahead. If it is negative, we step back. But we are always here, like we did for VAR, to be open to new ideas and if we can make football even more attacking, even more passionate, then we certainly look into that.

"From there to say what is going to happen in a few years from now, we will see."

Of course attackers love this new offside rule. They will be able to score more.

This would have to be trialled at some stage, but Collina also explaining how ex players have been asked about it.

Shock - attackers like the idea, but defenders and goalkeepers not so much.

The only purpose of the offside rule was to prevent goal hanging when it was invented back in the day.

Offside rules intend to prevent players from “goal-hanging” – staying near the opponent's goal and waiting for the ball to be passed to then directly score a goal. This was considered to be unsportsmanlike and make the game boring. In contrast, the offside rules force players not to get ahead of the ball, and thus favour dribbling the ball and short passes over few long passes.

I imagine that when the game was invented, there was no offside rule back then, A few players "goal hanging." Other players deem that to be unfair. Offside rule was invented to prevent goal hanging.

This new offside rule will still serve that very purpose (prevent goal hanging).

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has presented his plans to change the offside law to football’s lawmakers, and Fifa president Gianni Infantino believes it would create more attacking games.

Wenger, who is Fifa's Chief of Global Football Development, has come with a new law that would change that.

Wenger presented his plans to football’s lawmakers, International Football Association Board (Ifab), at their AGM on Friday and the new interpretation of the rule will be trialled in the lower leagues of Chinese football.

“Our aim as Ifab, and I am speaking under the control of my colleagues from Ifab, is always to see if we can make football more attractive - without changing the nature, obviously, of football,” said Infantino.

    ------------------------

It will be trialed in lower leagues of Chinese football this year.

Could MLS use this new offside rule next year? MLS (Don Garber) needs to contact FIFA and ask for the result from the trial. Then request FIFA permission to try it for MLS in 2022.

In return, MLS get a better and more exciting product due to this new offside rules that favor attackers. Allowing attackers to score more goals.
