I've been checking out the ReAL Salt Lake board and there's been some talk about getting a Cup competition going between the two teams. This would be similar to the Brimstone Cup that Chicago and Dallas compete for. Some possible early names are the Alpine Cup or Highlanders Cup. As I don't live in Denver, I am not the person who should be the ultimate coordinator of this from the Rapids side, but I thought I'd at least get some talk going on our end about it.

I like Rocky Mountain Cup. I also believe this is where a Rapids staff member should pick up the reigns.

I always laugh when fans in this forum start talking about doing something, only to have a response from a "third party" (cough) state that the Rapids staff is "working on it." Or similar.

It's not that I don't believe the staff isn't working on these things beforehand, but geez, you'd think that they might want to involve fans or otherwise clue them in... especially for something that will pretty much be recognized only by the true fans. Or have we already forgotten the lesson of the Brimstone Cup and the Supporters' Shield?

I mean, we still haven't heard a single peep from Wright or any of the Rapids about what it means to have a team in Utah, whereas Checketts and company have already thrown a few glancing blows in our direction.

If the Rapids want to help, that's fine, but I'm all for this being a fan run thing, just like the Brimstone Cup. Look what happened when MLS/Metros/D.C. tried to start that Atlantic Cup idea, It died a quick death. This should be organized by the fans.

I'd be happy to, if everyone REALLY thinks the best way to do this is to send all your donations to Phoenix and have the guy in Phoenix coordinate with somebody in Denver to get the Cup made (assuming we do it instead of SLC), arrange any type of presentation that might need to be done at the stadium, and other local details that would have to be handled. Of course, this would be easier and cheaper if somebody in Denver (like you Bonji), would be willing to volunteer.

I agree with Greenie here. We need someone to come out and talk some smack about the new franchise. Something about how its nice to have some new kids on the block to beat up on. Maybe quote machine Bazoka Joe can say a few words when he gets back from the national team about how he didn't see any ReAL SLC players in camp.

Jasonma, forgot you weren't in Denver. I'm not voulenteering because I know I don't have the time and don't want to do a crap job.

It's such a natural it's hard to believe the Alpine Cup doesn't already exist.

Anyway, it's a good idea, and I won't worry too much if the Rapids get involved. Mind you, I may not actually notice, but...

    King of the Mountain(s)!

I like including "King" since SL has been given the royal seal of approval. It'd be nice to overthrow the Royalty/ReALity every year. Our reward could be turning their crown upside-down :)

The Atlantic cup is still alive and well...I was there to see it awarded to United this year at RFK..not sure where all this crap started about it being worthless or meaningless to us..sure, its not a 'real' trophy, but we'll take an award for beating up on the MetroScum any day of the week..

Last I checked D.C. United are the current 2004 Atlantic Cup Champs. I too was there and saw it awarded and raised right in front of me.

I hope you guys do get something similar going tho. I think its good for fostering heated rivalries/ derbys, and is good for the leage in general.

My apologies to United/Metros fans. We've heard so little about the Atlantic Cup since it started, and there were a number of people who scoffed at the idea when it was announced, I incorrectly assumed that the idea never caught on like the Brimstone Cup did.

I like this idea. It wouldn't limit the trophy design to a Cup either. If we wanted something different we could go with some royal object instead. Crown, sword, scepter, etc.

I think that would put it into the SLC theme too much. I'd rather see a mountain of metal with a river coming down it or something. Or a cup so it is neutral.

If we're going with King of the Mountain, why not make it an Ice Axe?? That would make for a cool, menacing trophy, methinks.

That would be cool. Or the ice axe idea. Mount it on a big wooden frame and have a bronze place to enscribe the winner after each year. This would be similar to the prize for the Stanford/Cal "Big Game" where they award an axe.

Spot on, as it were. This is a winner.

So's the ice axe. I mean, a "neutral" cup? Screw that. This is a rivalry, and if you can't axe your bestest new friend, who can ya axe?

Spot and Malaga CF Fan win for creating a cup name and icon that sound so natural together, it's like it already existed (perhaps in another universe where soccer became popular in the U.S. first).

Almost as good as putting chocolate in my peanut butter...massage oil.

    King of the Mountain

    Winner take all: Ice Pick

Maybe the mascot could be a cute little miner elf or crazy old coot...

Time for a poll! Let's let the fans decide how this one works out. Jasonma, you're familiar with the SLC boards, start a poll with some possible names and let's get them involved.

    Cheers,

    BilFish
