I find that mental. Nketiah, Sarr and Eze barely had a kick. It wasn't until Mateta came on did we struggle......that was nothing to do with the CBs. They were both dominant.
CP made life so easy for us in the first 45 the team kinda switched off and went into cruise mode - then some mental fatigue set in and we started to lose effectiveness as the 2nd 45 wore on. the CBs were involved in that but I wouldn't point at them any more than anyone else. Ali was the motm, by far.
Ali was forced into more saves that we needed him to but I think they were all saves he should be making....maybe except the shot they had in the box where their forward managed to free himself. Ali Virg and Grav for me were all top notch and I liked how the new starters in Kostas Jones and Gakpo all played too. & how about Endo at the end there with that crunching but clean slide tackle? That's something we've been missing for the last 9 games.
I actually thought Palace did well to block some of our final shots/passes. 4 in particular spring to mind. Kostas first half and Grav in the 2nd......both with powerful goal bound efforts blocked. Think it was Gakpo or Szobo who had 1 in the 2nd too.....and then the pass which Lacroix cut out when Jota and Diaz were 2v1 (also in the 2nd)
Possibly a good thing is that we haven't yet really put together a great game from start to finish, maybe aside from Man United. It's a shame that 3/4 of the team will be gone for the international break, but it would be a great time to implement some more of slots teachings and ideas.
Ughhh international break, did you have to remind us... At least Fede and Harv will be a step closer to returning.
So long as we can keep delivering these uninspiring, nervy wins against the top sides I'll be happy. That and avoiding injuries.
Neither were poor but they were not great either, especially in the 2nd half when the back four were all over the place.
If that's your assessment then fair enough. This is the great thing about the sport, it's brilliant at dividing opinions and delivering different perspectives. If you were to ask 20 people here who saw the game, you'd probably get 20 different bits of feedback on how they played.
Goals Against is now 2. next best in PL (after 7 games played) is Arse, 3x as many conceded. fun fact: After the first seven games of last season Liverpool had faced 101 shots on goal, compared to just 64 this season.
I wonder what’s gone wrong with Alisson? Until that stint last February-March where he missed 8?9?10? games, I’m not sure he ever had more than a game or two here and there out. Now in the spate of 8-9 months he’s had 3 serious hamstring injuries. Don’t know if they’re all the same leg. Also, his injuries have come with 2 different fitness teams, so it’s not like he was being mistreated or misdiagnosed under Klopp. Yet his hamstrings now seem to be made of wet twine that snap when he sneezes hard. Furthermore, with due respect to the goalkeeper’s union, it’s not as if a keeper puts in 10k running in a game like say Szoboszlai. The main strain he would put on those hamstrings would be pivoting to jump side to side or on long kick outs with the occasional run out of the area to deny an onrushing counter. There are obviously a lot of medical people and physical therapists waaaaay more qualified than me to explain all this but I’m at a loss to understand why the player in the position that puts the least stress on his hamstrings is now our most frequent visitor to the hamstring clinic.
he missed like 2 months to start the season after we won the CL I think. that same season he missed a couple of important games including the 2nd leg of the Atletico tie we lost right before Covid
Yes, I had forgotten those. So his attendance record is worst than I portrayed, but I do think my point holds about his hamstring issues in the last 8 months. I just don’t know from where they’ve sprung. It would appear that if he were an outfield player, his name would be Naby.
anyone have any idea what Ali's injury record - type of problem / time out - compares to other goalies?
Purely theoretical or academic, and his WBA goal notwithstanding, but with an injury record such as his, he would never make it as an outfield player, not at the elite level.
I'm guessing this is a reoccurrence of the same hamstring that just kept him out a few games. Does wet twine snap easier than dry twine?
Our next four league games are against the current #3, 4, 5, 6 That will bring us to 11 played out of 38 (29%). So we should have a fairly good idea of how things are slotting in by Nov 10th.
I really don't see any team in this league as unbeatable and if we're on our A game, I don't see why we can't win these games comfortably. Look at Villa today. Shit. Chelsea today. Shit Brighton first half today Shit. Arsenal last few games. Shit The challenge for me is how we can recover between all these "tough games on paper" consecutively.
3 out of those 4 are at home is a big help. however, we need to be aware that in that run we also have: Leipzig away CL BHA away League Cup Leverkusen home CL so on balance I'd say
