That's right of them to elevate Cromwell. Giving her regular-roster pay for starting for us is only fair.

Now I'm just going to hope Cookie clears waivers and we are able to re-sign her.

Makes sense, given the injury problems the Rays have -- particularly to defenders -- that they'd want to make sure that Cromwell is securely in the fold.

BTW, has there been any offical word on the injury status of either Alagich or Lindsey, or are we still dealing only in rumors?

Well, Cromwell was a reserve, so that's where we have an empty space right now. Therefore, if we re-sign Cookie, I'd assume we'd re-sign her as a reserve.

can't we "demote" her to a reserve spot? just like how we "promoted" Cromwell?

i realize "demote" wasn't exactly the best word to use but i can't think of a better one right now... :/

    ahh thanks tcma :)

so can we "relegate" cook to the reserve roster or does that not work as to the 'rays can only bump people or "promote" people from the reserve to the active roster?

Nope. Players removed from the active roster MUST be waived. This is actually good for the player in many cases, because it gives other teams an opportunity to pick that player up and sign her to an active roster position. Otherwise, the player would have to take a cut in pay without the opportunity to go elsewhere unless the team traded her, and that's not right.

I would think, when a player is waived, the coach/GM would tell her whether or not (s)he intends to re-sign her as a reserve once she clears waivers. I'm sure Cookie knows she can stay in San Jose if she wants, but she can now entertain offers from other teams also.

So, does anyone know the date when teams can no longer waive players? I believe last year it was around July 1?

I think I've figured out Ian's coaching philosophy now. Go out on the field, leave all your guts out there working your butt off, be the most offensive minded player on a horrible field, and get rewarded by being waived. What an idiot! Ann could help this team a lot!
