Around 7.7 maybe? United wasn't as dominant as in the other seasons. Alexis Sanchez 16 goals (0PK) + 8 opta assists in 2953 minutes 3.3 dribbles per match 2.3 chances created per 90 34.1 accurate passes per 90. Rating 7.81 Arsenal 7.15 (+66) United 2009/10 7.19 https://1xbet.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/1849/England-Premier-League They very close in numbers, 0 PK balanced the higher number of G+A per 90 of CR7s, the higher number of key passes and dribbles of Alexis in 14/15 balance the better defensive contribution of Cristiano Ronaldo... arguably. Probably Sanchez won a little here (Cristiano still over 0.6-0.65 the average United squad). I think United in 06/07 and 07/08 was more on the 7.25-7.3 territory than 7.15-7.19 tho. My prediction is around 7.9 rating for Ronaldo in 2006/7. Probably 7.7 in 2008/09 (as well as 15/16) A bit less than his 2009-10 season (less key passes, shots, key passes, a bit more takles but not enough to balance things) Guess 8.3 Guess around 8 (and United as 7.2), But it depends, probably he had a similar run to Salah (17/18 - 19/20) or Sanchez (14/15 - 16/17) or Suarez (11/12 - 13-14), but I guess it to be lower than Henry at Arsenal (99-00 - 05-06, specially 02-03 till 05/06).
I think Cristiano Ronaldo was a world class dribbler and dribbler threat (but not legendary all-timer) until his 2010-2011 season, tier 2, then he lost a bit his athleticism (mobility specially), but even nowadays he is still a good dribbler, better than average just not world class more. Cristiano from the start until 06-07 was a flashier dribbler and a bit more technical in the way he dribbled (more creativity and better ball-handling), between 07-08 to 10-11 (4 seasons) he was a mix between skills with a more dominant athleticism, probably just as good.
8.3 is too low IMO Whoscored rewards efficiency above high volume actions and C.Ronaldo 07/08 was ultimately a more efficient player than he was in 2009/10 Superior goals per 90 rate(1.01 vs 0.94) Better pass accuracy(81.3% vs 80%) Better shot accuracy(58.8% vs 55.6%) Better freekick accuracy(10.5% vs 8.3%) Chance conversion(23.7% vs 16.8%) I'd wager although I can't prove it They had roughly the same touches with as much offensive burden shouldered Better defensive stats(07/08 > 09/10) Arguably equal/marginally superior crossing stats also C.Ronaldo averaged 3.86 attempted crosses per 90 in 2007/08 In 2009/10 it was 3.91 attempted crosses per 90 When mourinho switched him to WF in 2010/11 It dropped down to 2.81 attempted crosses per 90 I have no data on his cross completion rate in PL 2007/08 but in 2008/09 PL It was 15% and in 2004/05 PL It was 19% More relevant than this is his cross completion rate in the 2007/08 champions league was 19% https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/c...Cristiano-Ronaldos-simply-the-best-claim.html This was pre champions league final If Ronaldo completed 19% of his 118 crosses in the 2007/08 PL that would give him 0.73 accurate crosses per 90 In la liga 2009/10 it was 0.61 accurate crosses per 90 The balance as a complete player/offensive force was achieved in 2007/08 and 2009/10 and id think they'd be very comparable on whoscored 8.45-8.55 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/f...hreat-shown-by-his-remarkable-statistics.html Clearances 0.78 clearances per 90 I couldn't find accurate data for stuff like throughballs, big chances created etc This stuff wasn't recorded in any great detail back then Overall we can say C.Ronaldo 07/08 had a identical goals tally as suarez 13/14 with a better goals per 90 rate Better shooting accuracy Better passing accuracy and pass completion rate (per 90) Better defensive contribution (although Suarez has a slight edge in tackles Ronaldo more than balances it out in interceptions, clearances, blocks etc) Question is not who is better or not(although we can use the data to.draw our own conclusions) it is who produced the most high value actions And that is c.Ronaldo Accurate Passing per 90 ,dribbling per 90,scoring per 90,defensively actions per 90 he leads in all categories (albeit marginally) on a per 90 basis Suarez leads in assists and key passes Is that enough to outweigh the other categories Suarez had almost double the amount of key passes as Ronaldo(87 vs 46) But his passing was generally average/mediocre(74.8% pass completion rate is nowhere near being elite) someone like Didier Drogba 2009/10 a 'boring striker' or at least not the most eye catching technical CF can score so highly on their algorithm(8.32) 29 league goals at a rate of 0.94 gp90(with 10 assists) And great defensive work Something I think you overlook which is accounted for significantly Drogba had well below 20 accurate passes per 90 http://lfcstats.co.uk/suarezopta20132014.html https://www.theguardian.com/football/2009/jun/11/cristiano-ronaldo-manchester-united. 2007/08 Ronaldo merged efficiency and magic at rate never seen in the English top flight The freekicks were deadly The interplay with his teammates crisp and precise The vision was world class even if he never used it as much as your typical AM And literally no forward in the world(then or now)ran without the ball as much as Ronaldo Those off the balls runs and the way opposition teams would routinely double up on him or even triple up on him freeing up tevez,Rooney and co And there is the unquantifiable magic he produced 1344693698643316738 is not a valid tweet id Be it those exquisite backheel passes, tempo setting one touch passes ( and he was a capable crosser too) some of the ball controls he pulled off that season at full pelt were completely ridiculous Just generally unplayable Maybe 5 times in a 50 game season(including league,FA cup,CL)was he successfully marked out and neutralized The rest were performances ranging from spectacular to fairly good You'd have to watch matches( or take my word for it) You have the data for his ball carrying statistics in la liga 2009/10 (I posted them already) No doubt in my mind(upon further inspection)that 2007/08 PL performance was objectively on par with 2009/10 If not better(when weighing things like the strength of the league and record vs top sides in particular)
I think whoscored values non-PK goals more than PK goals (1 point for non-PK goals and 0.5 for PK goals) and they value more assists and key passes than passes completed, maybe way more... that would put Suarez higher than Cristiano. But it is just a guess.
That would be stupid if they did that A penalty scored in a 2-1 win against 4th place arsenal is worth more than a open play goal in a 5-1 win vs 18th place Norwich city Especially if that goal is the 3rd,4th or 5th A penalty scored in the 90th minute to win 2-1 vs 5th place Everton is worth more than 2 stat padded open play goals in a 4-0 win against 19th place Fulham https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/2332083 https://www.transfermarkt.us/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/81657 These are pressure goals with greater significance I think whoscored and wider football fans in this statistical driven age have a unhealthy obsession with penalty vs non penalty goals If a pressure penalty was so easy than maybe Italy would win world cup 1994 Maybe Baggio would win the 1994 ballon dor Maybe Brazil would progress beyond the WC QF 1986 in normal time with Zicos penalty kick Maybe Zico would've had an ultimate showdown in a WC final vs Maradonas Argentina(assuming they also defeat West Germany) Maybe Zico would've won the 1986 world cup adding that extra gloss to his resume and raising his historical profile See how scoring pressure penalties opens a door of possibilities with no end I cannot tell you how many titles/championships were lost or decided by crucial penalties in decisive moments But how many championships were won on goal difference in the history of top flight football? Probably none Its not as simple as open play goal > non open play goal There is a context that has to be explored Otherwise without the correct context and proper weighting of offensive actions we get Gerd Muller > Cruyff That is a very easy argument to make with goal involvement statistics and shallow analysis

Yes that moment is under more pressure, but the thing with penalties vs open play goals in general is that you dont have to create a oportunity or be in a position to score to begin with to get a goal. In extreme cases you can play like crap (not directly related to CR7) and the team get a penalty in the 90th minute when you lead with 4-0 and he has a "good game" just beeing the teams pk-taker. So it kinda inflates the totals vs other who may not take them or not taking them as much/often, look at last season when Imobile won the Golden boot over Lewandowski while obviously Lewa is the better goalscorer. Much as a product of the penalty rain in the Serie A that season.
I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I would be willing to bet money that those stats are way understated, especially the 06-07 season. If he had 4+ dribbles per 90 between 2004-2006, there's no way he suddenly dropped to 2.7 in 06/07, when his playstyle was still pretty much the same (with more end product) and which might've been the best dribbling season of his career. Even 1.8 in 08/09 sounds too low. According to Whoscored, he completed 3.1 dribbles per game in 09/10 La Liga. He probably dribbled less in 08/09 (as he was coming back from a pretty severe injury in mid-2008, I think) than in 09/10, but that much less? Seems unlikely. I mean, this season in Serie A (at 35 and having considerably changed his playstyle over the years) he's averaging 2 dribbles per 90. More than in his 08/09 season at 23-24? Not impossible but, again, unlikely. Dribbling stats before 2009 don't seem to be reliable.
The 2008/09 stats are defintely açcurate and well recorded https://eplindex.com/34338/gareth-bale-80-million-pound-man-bale-1213-vs-ronaldo-0809.html For 2006/07 there are varying numbers Actim puts the number much higher as this Between PL matchday 1(20th August 2006) and PL matchday 24(20th January 2007) he played 1970 minutes Scoring 13 goals 0.60 goals per 90 Making 59 crosses 2.7 accurate crosses per 90 Completing 87 dribbles 3.99 completed dribbles per 90 Making 38 tackles 1.74 tackles per 90 And completing 461 passes 21.1 passes per 90 https://www.redcafe.net/threads/cristiano-ronaldo-top-dog.141376/ Actim was the official player rating system of the English Premier League and Coca-Cola Championship. They are derived from all the actions that take place during a match, including goals, shots on target, corners, fouls, offsides, passes, tackles, blocks and clearances. The raw data can be used to generate a wide range of tables and statistics such as player profiles, team and player head-to-heads and form guides. Fair enough. I thought it was a bit low but in a way it makes sense since it's close to his 10/11 numbers (2.2 in La Liga) and he wasn't always in his best physical form in 08/09. That seems more accurate for 06/07. It's close to his 04/05 and 05/06 numbers. I expect his first four seasons at United (from 03/04 to 06/07) to be all pretty similar in terms of dribbling stats (probably around 4 per 90). 07/08 is when he started changing his playstyle. He started dribbling less (even though he was still a world-class dribbler) and focusing more on scoring, he didn't start his plays from as deep as in 06/07 and started spending more time in the box (which is why he scored plenty of headers in 07/08). So the above stats for that season, around 3 dribbles per 90 (similar to his 09/10 numbers), are probably pretty accurate. As to the thread's main question, I would say that, all things considered, he was a fantastic but not legendary dribbler from 2007-2010. Although, if you take end product of dribbles into account and not just the raw amount of dribbles per game, you could argue that his 09-10 season was borderline legendary since there aren't many players in history who would be able to score some of the solo goals he scored that season. I would, however, classify him as a legendary dribbler from 03/04 to 06/07 (especially 06/07, if you take end product of dribbles into account). And as above average from 10/11 to 13/14 (maybe 20/21 as well, if he keeps playing the way he did in the last few games). On a separate note, I would say my favorite seasons of his, aesthetically, are (in no specific order, and for different reasons) 06-07, 09-10, and 13-14: I think 09-10 was his peak as an all-round attacking threat. He dribbled, scored, created chances. The whole package. Too bad Real Madrid didn't win any trophies that year. His speed, power, and agility combined with his skills and close control made him an absolute beast when running at defenders.
Just posted 2005/06 Age 20/21 @Gregoire1 @sohel_bashar @Tropeiro A living nightmare for fullbacks Around January/February 2006 he became completely unplayable Opta look at the upturn in fortunes for Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo. 68% dribble completion rate!! https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11667/2370690/rip-roaring-ronaldo-in-form Contrary to what is commonly said Cristiano Ronaldo did not magically become more consistent after the 2006 world cup It was probably the premature death of his father at the end of 2005 where we saw him develop into a indomitable player
Di Maria was never a dribble heavy winger (more of a playmaking winger), and in any case in 2013/14 he played predominantly as a left sided center midfielder in a 4-3-3, a shuttler.
Those are very interesting numbers. However, his father died in September 2005. I think a more likely explanation for his jump in performance in early 2006 is what Ferguson told him during a 2-1 defeat versus Benfica (I think it's actually the game in that video's thumbnail) in December 2005, which got Man.United eliminated in the first round of the 05-06 UCL: https://bleacherreport.com/articles...guson-once-reduced-cristiano-ronaldo-to-tears
Nice graphic. Where do you find it??? Anyway, both OPTA and Statsbomb have their own way to calculate stats.
https://www.espn.com/soccer/blog-ma...-to-madrid-and-juve-goal-machine?platform=amp Only 2.5 completed dribble per 90 during his peak years (2006-12). Much worse later. Overall good dribbler at his absolute peak but not elite. Zaha probably has better dribbling stats than him.

Ill be posting something here before the end of this month His all round game without goals Im just making some finishing touches (editing) Im modelling it on some comps ive seen of Rivaldo and Zico by youtuber R9godmagic (touch, runs, dribbling, passing, vision, ball carrying) He is even better than i remembered in many of those aspects
Hey @carlito86 you seem to have a good knowledge of Ronaldo’s dribbling at Manchester United. So I wanted to know what was his best ever dribbling performance (preferably not after 2006). Not necessarily in term of number of take-ons but overall dribbling like ball carrying for example. I want to make an action map about it, if you could give me 2-3 games it would be perfect, thank you

I looked on these various websites (whoscored, opta, statsbomb, etc) and I still have not found a comprehensive definition of a dribble/take on (terms that are apparently interchangeable). It doesn’t even matter if I agree with their definition, I just want to know if they have one that takes account of every situation and counts events consistently and fairly for every player. Two ambiguities that are left open by the definitions I’ve seen: 1. The direction of play. Do they count all takes on, moving towards goal, moving sideways, moving back even, as dribbles? 2. How much spaces can there be between dribbler and defender as the dribbler moves past defender? What if there is 5 yards between dribbler and defender as the dribbler moves across the defender? 4 yards? 3 yards? I want to know these statistical organisations have these matters controlled for. What I don’t want is for these things to be left at the individual discretion of opta employees so that favouritism or incompetence can compromise the results. Because all the definitions they have given publicly that I have seen so far leave these ambiguities open in which discrimination can flourish.
