So for those that went, what did you think? First Half we played a 4-4-2 ------------Busch------------ Herdsman-Fraser-Akwari-Frankie -----------Oughton----------- ------Sutton------Lagos------ -----------Traeger----------- -------Ritch----Barclay------- Second Half we played a 3-5-2 ----------Ueltschey---------- -Herdsman---Fraser---Akwari- ------Oughton----Paule------ ----Sutton--------Traeger---- -----------Martino----------- ----Cunningham----Buddle---- Sutton looked pretty good, Traeger looked out of place and Oughton didn't have the best of days. Fraser played solid and has a great long ball out of the back that will no doubt spring Cunningham on a few 1-v-1 this season. Herdsman played solid, nothing spectacular but solid. They won the game 4-0. Barclay scored in the 1st half. Buddle, Sutton & Martino all scored in the 2nd half. Some players were absent that were not announced as being absent; those included Mike Clark and Chad McCarty. Elliot and Denton were both in attendance but didn't play and Barclay came off in the first half injured as he was holding his hamstring. Attendance was probably around 700 or so.
Thanks for that, had no idea who some of the guys out there were. I guess it was Sutton (#27?) that looked alright out right. But he couldn't finnish a couple of good chances. Barclay looked ok, couple of decent headers. Anybody have #'s for the players also (especially the new ones)?
I think it was Cunningham, not Sutton that scored the 3rd goal. Sutton was really impressive, Oughton was pitiful, weird that Herdsman was wearing #5, that's McCarty's number. Players not playing: Testo, Wingert, Marshall(Vacation)--Clark, McCarty, Denton, Crew, Murriagui, Vercollone, Haefner, Elliott, Mais, and there were no trial players that I could see. All teams have to be salary cap compliant and be down to 18 SR and 6 DP by Monday March 1st.
I'll just cut and paste what I wrote on MN... All this is said with the fact that it was a scrimmage against a college team. No doom and gloom, just observations based on a meaningless scrimmage. No Mike Clark sightings at all. Some minor injuries were Barclay (came off with a hammie?), Herdsman nicked the top of his foot/ankle. He got taped and continued to play. Jake Trager looked to have injured his shoulder. He was doing the "swing the arm around in circles" drill for a lot of the game. But I never saw him get attention from the staff for it. I think the Crew played extremely right handed today. It seemed like everything went through Sutton. My opinion of Sutton is that he is fast, but he seemed just off from the other players on the team. To me he seemed to frustrate teammates with both his passes and his runs. But I also got the impression he might have been trying to impress, and therefore "tried too hard". Several people around me were commenting on his Dante like touches. Which I thought he had quite a few. Duncan Oughton did not look like he wanted to play. He looked bored and almost put out by being there. Gave up on a lot of things that he normally would have gone all gumby on last year. Dunno if it was a "didn't want to get hurt thing" or not but he looked bad. Herdsman had two good crosses out of the back, and one "shot" that literally left the stadium. Fraser was nothing spectacular. Got dispossed once by the little guy, and tried one move late in the game that he completely blew. Otherwise he did his job in a solid fashion. HeyDude played on the left while he played...and collected his yellow. Akwari played well w/ the rest of the back line. Made one huge mistake when he looked up field to where he thought Fraser was going to pass. So when the pass came to him, the UD player jumped on it. To Nelson's credit he recovered pretty quick. All in all, I thought the defense was nothing great, or nothing horrible. They were just there and mostly controlled a team they should have. Trager (does anyone else think he looks a bit like Convey?) played well I thought. He was everywhere making good plays, but nothing great. I certainly don't think he hurt his chances of making the squad. Ritch didn't do much in my opinion, but he wasn't bad either. Barclay played well while he was in there. Scored one that was called back for being offside, but I am not sure he was. He certainly didn't think so as he yelled at the AR for a bit afterwards. Lagos was the Lagos I remember. Big ol loping strides that seem to carry him faster than they should. I thought he did ok on the left. K-mart, Buddle, and Cunny were the same that I remember. Cunny was doing a lot of shirt pulling, but they all looked like they were at practice to me. Like they were doing things for fun and could turn it on when they wanted. TBAR
it was sutton. talked with him after the game, it went right through the goal mouth and smacked him right "little boys area" and went in to the goal...afterwards he joked that it was a "painful goal" but worth it. looks wise? a little. soccer wise? he couldn't even hold convey's jock-strap. i thought he was disappointing. he never seemed to take advantage of the opportunities given him out on the wing <just the opposite of suttong> and his passes were off all day long. the only reason he'll make the squad is b/c he is the one player who qualifies for the whole "senior DP" roster spot...if he didn't i don't think i would keep him in the roster. of course i don't think i would keep around oughton if i just looked at todays game as well...so take my somewhat pathetic opinions not so seriously. one game does not make a player, and especially a game against a college side where it seemed half the crew team was going about 65%

Only looks wise...soccer wise you are right he is no where near. I seem to be in the minority for Sutton and Trager. I thought Trager was much better in the 1st when he was more in the middle. He disrupted a lot, and made runs forward at pretty good times. I agree he lost a little something out wide. I still think Sutton had a BUNCH of bad touches, but that may be more apparent because how much they pushed the ball out to him. He also (to me) seemed to crowd his teammates when they tried to get into their triangles. TBAR
I see the Treager-Convey comparison, but a little taller. Oughton has never impressed me, hacks well but passes poorly. I hope that someone plays better then he did last year for us. If he improves his game and gets it done great. Sometimes I wondered if anyone was playing out wide on the left, nothing happened there.
so your saying they played the dayton flyers basketball team? I find it hard to believe they had time in their busy A-10 schedule.
Cut Oughton and keep Mike Clark. Even if Clark does not see a minute of time, his expierence and time with the team offers more to the team than what oughton can do on the field. ..and he does not "need one more year to prove himself or improve."
I was looking into the stands during the Bill Archer chant, almost expecting to see some guy standing and waving at us... but then I remembered, Bill Archer is a man of mystery As for the game, I thought we looked pretty pathetic in the first half. The second half looked a lot better. I do agree that Cunny was taking the game too lightly and slacked off at times. Oughton seemed to be trying not to pull a Hristo and cripple a college kid, I don't think he did particullarly good or bad. My last comment, the weather was too damn nice, and I got a fcuking sunburn on my face. I also got the raccoon mask from wearing my sunglasses, so this should be a riot when I go to work tomorrow.
Not that simple. If the revelation of the salary numbers made anything clear, it's that salary cap restrictions are a very real issue, and that's why Oughton stuck around longer than Bonseu. No doubt.

I'll echo the Cunningham thing, but I'll add that I thought the same of Buddle and Martino. The three of them looked disinterested at best. All three were walking around with their hands on their hips until the ball was played to them and they didn't make any runs off the ball to present themselves. I was really upset with Cunningham because I thought he pushed the ball wide too much and very often got in Traeger's and Sutton's space that kind of made them inoporable. Maybe in his defense he was thinking when he went wide they would push in and take his spot, but that never happened. Still even at the level they were playing, they were all able to stamp their name on the result, which tells you alot about how low UD is as competition. Still would like to see a level of intensity from the three players that this season hinges on.

I don't care whatt Martino and Buddle look like now or how hard they played. I just want to see them both out on the field playing hard in 25 games together that count this year. Anyway I was under the impression that niether were going to play on Saturday. Guess I was wrong. Why no Elliot? And I agree with those who were not impressed with Jefro. I still think it is a vacuum when he gets the ball, it ain't ever leaving.
