Hejduk and Glen are out due to the Gold Cup.

Martino is out due to a stupid red card.

Does Wingert finally get back his starting spot?

The fun and joys of Crew pre-games continue...

Nope. And we still gotz da All Star game to host.

Hejduk & Glen - Gold Cup
Kyle Martino - dunce cap, err red card suspension
    Szetela - probable, concussion
    Herdsman - questionable, groin
    Wingert - doghouse
Sutton & Gaudette - not ready for prime time
Barclay, Storey & Vasquez - in soccer's equivalent of Krypton's phantom zone

    Hmmm...

    Walk
    Kell - Chad - Fras - Shul
    Szet or Wing - Elli
    Loco - Hendo
    Budd - Woly
    ?

    Go with what barely works?

Danny is cleared and will be fine this weekend...

    ------------Walker------------
    Kelly--Fraser--Marshall--Schulte
    --------Elliott--Szetela--------
    Rodriquez------------Henderson
    -------Wolyniec--Buddle-------

    That'd be my guess...

Fid, you've got to ask Andrulis what the hell makes Schulte/Kelly a better option than Wingert at the outside back spots. I just don't get it.

It was one of the questions I had for post-game but he scooted...

I am hoping to get the question answered sometime this week, though who knows.

Look for an article on HPI soon.

Hey, I'm a SJ fan second. This will be a great game - SJ really moves the ball and should give the Crew fits in the back. OTOH, we look much stronger if we can get in the box and get some balls into Buddle and Wolly.

Speed vs. 3 yards and a cloud of dust - some great contrasts...(ref. Woody Hayes circa 1958).

Mark! SJ plays with a style that will FILL CCS. They're never really out of the game and the ball FLIES around. Good stuff

Don't forget that Danny O'Rourke, Worthington Kilbourne High School graduate, is on the Earthquakes roster.

A lot depends on the abilities of players we have rarely seen.

    Herdsman might be available.

Szetela was out of form at the beginning of the season, has concussion issues now, and hasn't done anything that I know of to show he's in form now.

I don't know much about Stephen Armstrong, he might play but I wouldn't know where.

Fidler doesn't think there is any reason Sutton should not start. Not having seen him, its hard to say. The fact we have barely seen him in 1 1/2 years doesn't say much for him (or the coach, take your pick). I would like to try someone other than Buddle up front. Maybe Dante Washington? Oh, sorry, he can't get minutes with RSL.

There are a lot of options:

    ------------ Wolyniec ---------- Sutton/Buddle/Testo ---------

    --------------------------- Elliott -----------------------------
    Wingert/Testo/Wingert ------------------------------ Henderson
    ------------------- Rodriguez/Wingert/Szetela ------------------

    Schulte ---- Marshall ---- Fraser ---- Herdsman/Rodriguez/Rodriguez

    -------------------------- Walker -------------------------------

    I suspect we'll see:

    ----------- Wolyniec ----------- Buddle ------------

    Henderson -------------------------------- Rodriguez

    ---------- Wingert ------------- Elliott -------------
    Schulte ---- Marshall ---- Fraser ---- Kelly/Herdsman

    -------------------- Walker ------------------------

I would at least like to see Wingert or Elliott or Armstrong in an attacking mid role, not just two d-mids in a 6-2-2. Using Testo or Wingert or Armstrong as a winger might be a stretch, so maybe Rodriguez has to stay at right wing. Wingert isn't fast but I thought he had some decent games at left wing last year. Testo was supposed to be the #1 at left wing.

Why would you play Wingert in an attacking midfield role? How many times has he played there?

It doesn't matter, SJ roasts us for three. I predict 3-0 smurfs.

He played for a compotent coach in the U-20s. Although, he's probably been back long enough now for Greg to tell him to forget anything the fat man told him in Holland.

At this point Szetela needs to start getting time.

Fiddy, any chance when you talk to Musab about Wingert you can get him to gauransheed victory?

Gallardo was released from the Panama Gold Cup squad and is expected back at Crew camp anyday.

Rejected? Nice... they must have been afraid he'd spread the Andrulis infection amongst their team.

Duncan Oughton did very well in five games up front last year, partnering with Martino. Who has played the position for the Crew besides Martino in recent years? Who plays it in the reserve games? I would prefer to see Elliott play a-mid, but having Wingert at d-mid is a gamble because I think his defense is weaker, and playing Wingert at a-mid would reduce changes in the formation. I think offensively both Elliott and Wingert could be very good, the biggest negative for both is their lack of speed, but good ball control trumps speed.

I wasn't aware that Szetela got much PT in Holland. He played against Egypt, but who else? Danny wasn't available as a sub last Saturday; Szetela, the Crew and the league obviously need to be careful about concussions. The comments Harkes made about Eskandarian were frightful. If he is fit and healthy I would consider playing him, but I wouldn't play him (or Armstrong) just to play him.

Harkes made another comment in the last game about how dangerous Martino was on the ball and that he couldn't be allowed to have space, I just laughed. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the comment again to quote it. It was the type of comment that has been made many times before by many people, but it was still a beaut.
