Those darn French Canadians are going to steal one of the talents from the Crew. Draft is November 23rd (before the final, strange) Teams can protect 11 players. GA and Home Grown are exempt. I did not see anything about DPs. L'Impact choose 10. (no more than 1 from each team) Enjoy trying to pick your 11 this year. I'll go on record to say that if Tchani's graduates from GA he will be chosen. If not, Mr Meram may be going north of the border.
If it looks likely that our out of contract guys will re-sign, I protect: Mendoza Renteria Ekpo Rogers Gaven O'Rourke Marshall James Hesmer 1 of: Gardner, Francis (I think either is worth protecting and am not scared to lose Miranda 1 of: Tchani, Duka (Duka if Tchani is Gen Adidas, if not, Tchani)
I, for one, would not be willing to lose Miranda. I would protect Gardner since he seems more all around than Francis, who is pretty much just speed.
Crew Union needs to update their Google Calendar. It shows it as the 27th. Thx for the correction. https://www.google.com/calendar/htm...gle.com&gsessionid=OK&dates=20111101/20111201
In no particular order:1 Mendoza 2 Renteria 3 Marshall 4 Miranda 5 Ekpo 6 Rogers 7 Hesmer 8 Gaven 9 James 10 O'Rourke 11 Balchan
Gotta go with opening whistle. The 2nd half subs are fair game. I hope we protect the best players without taking stupid risks this year (see Brian Carroll). Could we offer Burns if they don't draft from us?
1. Marshall 2. Hesmer 3. Gaven 4. Trr 5. Ekpo 6. Renteria 7. Miranda 8. James 9. Danny O 10. Hammer 11. Gardner Leave Mendoza and his hefty hefty contract on the line. They wont eat that.
1. Balchan 2. Hesmer 3. Ekpo 4. Francis 5. Gaven 6. James 7. Marshall 8. Miranda 9. Renteria 10. O' Rourke 11. Gardner Assumptions. tRR will not be here next season - no idea how the contract thing works and whether when his contract runs out he becomes a free agent MLS wide, or world wide etc. tchani is protected by GA as is Duka. Tempted to protect Anor, but I don't think he has quite played enough to impress. I agree that Meram would probably be taken of who is left or maybe Burns if all they have seen of him is a highlight reel on youtube.
I would say you can almost leave Hesmer unprotected and cover another field player instead. Montreal has on their Roster: Wild Bill Gaudette Greg Sutton ("on loan" from RBNY) Evan Bush Maxime "Holy" Crepeau (okay, the "Holy" part I just made up) Bill had a fairly severe injury over the summer after starting in goal for them. When that injury happened, Greg Sutton was brought in "on loan" but sat on the bench mostly while Evan Bush took over. Evan Bush (25 yr old from Concord Township, Ohio) had .755 GAA in 19 games for them. Now, Montreal could upgrade to "the big time" but they seem pretty strong at GK already keeping what they have around. I don't think Greg Sutton sticks around and Maxime looks like 17 year old academy-type player, but Gaudette is an experienced former MLS keeper and Evan Bush was one of the better keepers in NASL this year.
Very true. After 15 years of constant expansion drafts, you would think I would remember that this year like in years past...
I say we make everyone on the team change their name to Kevin Burns, leave everyone unprotected, that way they have no choice but to select him.
Full details here: http://pressbox.mlssoccer.com/content/2012-expansion-draft-rules Per usual, MLS isn't entirely clear. What was clear: 1) Teams can only lose 1 player each (where was this last year?). 2) Teams can protect 11 3) GA players who don't graduate (we have 2 GA's: Duka and Tchani) are auto-protected. 4) Homegrown players are auto-protected (Horton). 5) DP's are not auto protected, but MUST be protected if they have a no-trade clause. 6) Clubs may not make available more than three fewer (x-3) the number of internationals they have on the roster. What wasn't clear. 1) What is considered an international. MLS says: "For purposes of this expansion process, for US-based clubs, any non-domestic US player would count as an International and, for Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps, any non-domestic US player or non-domestic Canadian players would count as an International." So, do green-card holders count (as they are non-domestic), or not? Hmmm. Anyway, assuming we think everyone intends to re-sign, and GC players don't count as internationals. 1) Marshall 2) Gaven 3) James 4) Rogers 5) Ekpo 6) O'Rourke 7) Balchan 8) Renteria -------------I'm hoping almost everyone would agree on those 8------------ 9) Miranda 10) Mendoza 11) Gardner GA: Tchani: he hasn't played, why would he graduate? GA: Duka: I fear he may graduate. If he does, then bump Gardner. HG: Horton ----------------------------------------------------- I leave Will off. I don't think they'll take him, and I think Andy G is just as good anyway. Temped to leave Viva off as well. But guys who score 13 goals, and 5 game winners, and a reliable from the spot, don't grow on trees.
How does it work with tRR and the contract situation? or is there no situation and I made it up in my mind?
(Note: Because we have 7 International players, we must protect at least 3) 1. Marshall 2. Gaven 3. O'Rourke 4. Renteria (Int'l) 5. Ekpo (chance he tests the waters overseas) 6. Rogers (chance he tests the waters overseas) 7. James 8. Miranda (Int'l) 9. Francis (Int'l) 10. Hesmer 11. Gardner GA (unsure of status)- Duka (chance he tests the waters overseas if he isn't GA), Tchani HG- Horton Last Man Out- Balchan (I protected both Gardner and Francis because finding left backs is so difficult and if we left Francis unprotected, we'd have to protect Mendoza. Plus we already have James, Marshall, Miranda, and O'Rourke defensively.) Unprotected- Balchan, Mendoza, Meram, Anor, Veeder, Gehrig, Heinemann, Gruenebaum, Rusmir, Williams, Grossman, Burns, Cunningham, Prim, Riggs, Sippola I'd expect Balchan to be picked. Anor, Meram, Mendoza, and Heinemann could potentially be picked. We pray that Burns gets picked (like Moffat last year). And don't forget we potentially (probably) add playmaker Ben Speas (UNC) and defender Chad Barson (Akron) to our roster next year as Home-Grown players.
Im just hoping LA loses someone this year. Part of their success this year can be contributed to the fact that their roster remained intact this past off-season.
We got plenty of D-Mids cant we send Burns and Rusmir to Montreal in a deal to avoid any of our other players being taken. I hate the thought of losing Meram, Balchan, or Anor among others. Marshall and Gaven are the 2 we cannot afford to lose.
I believe we're obligated to make no more that 4 available, which would mean that we need to protect at least 3.
Unlike the NHL, I do not think this kind of deal is permitted in MLS (though I am not sure how might be enforced). Odd how LA and NYRB "avoided" the draft last season. In regard to only losing one player this season and then being exempt--well last year there were two expanasion teams and if you were to have been exempt after losing one player, there would not have been enough players to go around. That's why you could lose two--though I still think it would have been fairer to require all teams to lose a player before you could take a second player from any team, as some teams lost no players (see above).
I'm working on arranging to get to LA for the Cup, for two reasons: 1) To watch the Crew win their second 2) I want to stand up and ask Commissioner Garber a question: "In the 2011 MLS Superdraft, three teams lost two players each. In fact those teams all lost two players before any other team lost even one, and several teams lost no players at all. This year, with 18 rosters from which to choose ten total players, it's possible - even likely - that some teams who lost two players last year will lose one more this year while eight teams, including in all probability some who lost no players in 2011, will lose none again in 2012. Thus we'll be presented with a situation where, over two years, some teams will have lost three players to other teams while some teams will have given up none at all. In view of how patently unfair this is, particularly in a league with rather minimal rosters and artificially low salary budgets, wouldn't it be muc more equitable to have the three teams that lost two players last year be exempted from the 2012 draft or, at the very least, be given two extra spots on their protected players list?
