No, Crew 2 has gone without playing with u17 eligible players (05’s and younger) in every single game except 1 this season

Crew lose 2-3 to Philly in the final. Crew we’re up 2-0 and Philly scored 3 consecutive goals to win 2-3. This was the exact same thing that happened in December except Crew we’re the ones who scored three goals in a come back win. This is a really heartbreaking result for the group

    There is some good news:
Golden Ball (tournament MVP): Gio De Libera (2005)
    Golden Glove: Stas Lapkes (2006)

They also had players with their u17’s as well so they didn’t have enough players for Union 2

For those who are super focused on youth development across the United States there has been a really interesting trend starting to happen. Academy players are leaving MLS academies and moving to USL teams as a professional players. They are seeing a path to professional minutes outside of the MLS Pro system and feel like they are not getting tied down to some of the standard MLS contracts.

This combined with the new homegrown/territory system we are going to see even more youth player movement. Will be interesting to see how aggressive the Crew are since one of the consistent themes we hear is that there is not enough local talent.

It means that the academy will be able to occasionally pull more talent out of the major metro’s such as Chicago, LA, NYC, DC, and Dallas. However, because each club can protect 9 players from u15 and up (18 are protected in LA/NYC because they have two clubs), the majority of the top pro bound talent won’t be able to leave because they will be specifically named and protected by their local MLS club.

For talent in small markets very little changes, if anything it actually gets harder to move to an MLS club in another market. You can claim players from your territory at any time once they’re u15 and a freshman in high school. This means that for example, if Cinci has a kid from Columbus in their academy, we can protect that player and automatically demand compensation for their rights or for them to release the player if they aren’t willing to pay the new flat rate fee for the rights. The big markets will have to use all 9 spots to protect players not at their club within their markets, because all 9 players are potential pro’s, even players 10-15 could have pro potential. In a small market like Columbus, we aren’t even sure if there are 9 players from u15 and up not in the Crew academy going division one, let alone showing pro potential. This applies to the other small markets as well, your chances of getting out and going to another club will be hampered. USL clubs are likely to take advantage of this because if a player with pro potential is protected but doesn’t want to play for their local MLS club, really their only option is going to be to go to Europe (if they have an EU passport) or a USL academy. Because you specifically have to name 9 players for your list, MLS clubs are not going to let those 9 players walk without a serious battle, but USL clubs can get those kids for free

So for the Crew this means we have a big opportunity to poach talent from the large markets that aren’t protected while at the same time ensuring that we get all of the top talent in Ohio (excluding Cinci and Dayton which are FCC’s exclusive territory) either to play for the Crew academy or become a source for revenue for the club from their rights being purchased. However not being able to go after players from small market territories is an inconvenience because it will be a fight for their rights every time

I havent seen any leak around what the compensation will be but depending on what that standardized number is, teams will be able to make more informed decisions because they will know what exactly they will have to pay to get a youth player. I also think it should "clear the field" a little so that you can look at say the top couple players in the Dallas area on protected and know they are free game with out dealing with any issues. I would imagine you get that list of top unprotected players from the top 10 markets and try and target a couple of them.

We will have the list of the players every club are protecting just like we do with the current lists of players clubs claim rights to within their academies

If a player is on the list, you have to ask yourself if you would pay money for them, if it’s only a role player on an academy team then probably not and that will be most protected players because by u15 most of the top players around the country have been identified and recruited to MLS academies

This is ridiculous. How can an MLS "protect" players not in their academy and hamper their ability to go wherever they want? Someone (I hope) is going to challenge this nonsense in court. What if a player and academy coach/director don't get along or just have different views on things but the kid is a stud? Can the MLS team begrudgingly or greedily write his name down on some list and prevent him from going to another MLS academy - with/without some form of compensation to the local MLS team? If the kid isn't in their academy either by players choice or even team's choice, how can the local club profit off the kid?

MLS would probably say that as a single entity, they can't restrain trade within the league. Kids are as free as ever to go overseas or sign with USL teams.
