So, the cynic in me says: is it one of the NY or one of the LA teams that is behind this because they want to sign someone?

I never thought Holstad had even the slightest shot at the first team. Among other things he only started two games his senior year at Kentucky. Surely he has always been destined for Crew II.

They saw something in him and good, but as for competing for midfield time with Nagbe, Morris, et al, he would never have seen the light of day.

Also interesting about Quinton. He was on a Crew II contract last year and was brought up on a short term deal for the US Open cup, but was cut at the end of the year.

You'd think that there wasn't a whole lot they need to learn about the guy; they've seen him plenty.

I wonder if Quinton is there in part because they just need the bodies, plus, it’s a favor to the kid to help him keep fit and give a little something to put on his resume for 2023 while he looks for another club (maybe in USL).

That, and this coaching staff doesn’t really know much about him, even if Bez and Courtois do.

And isn’t “unsigned trialist” kind of redundant?

Sometimes trialists in some sports are signed to a short-term contract. The NBA has those 10 day contracts, for example. I think the NHL has something like that as well. Allows things like medical etc. to be covered. I forget what those are called... Jackets had a couple in preseason

Not sure what they were called then, I think they call them “Starters”, now.

Also, baseball spring invitees have to sign a minor league contract with the team.

Because, with Matan back from being on loan, we may already be over the int'l player limit???

These slots used to cost $50K in GAM. Times have changed.

And some of our guys who've been around for a few years need to get green cards.

I would have to think so. Hes probably had it for a while.

Nancy may be playing with 2 strikers often. We could probably use more than just Cucho, Ramirez, JRR. What happens when Cucho gets injured, Ramirez cant find the net, and JRR still isnt completely ready for the spotlight?? Kei is in preseason with Montreal now. Wanting out. Making 94k a year.

    Bring our boy home!

OK fine; he wants out because he feels 94k (I thought it was 84k but no matter) is not enough, so presumably he won't take a salary in that neighborhood to come to Columbus.

So the question is, how much are you willing to pay him, and for how long?

What type of transportation was Kei? Kick the tires, change the oil, the old boy has a few more miles in that tank.

Its hard to watch Philly making moves and we have basically done nothing thus far. Give me something to get excited about other than not being coached by Caleb Porter.

I thought Kei was a US citizen? He's been in the US for a long time and probably doesn't want to go back to Africa after his playing days.

    No. No no no no.

In addition to being a head case who burned some bridges during STC, Kei Kamara is 38 years old. We’re in something of a re-build. We need to sign someone who has a chance of being here for longer than one or two years. Especially when that guy is going to be a backup, and probably demand more money than a backup normally would.

This team should be in win now mode. It’s still one of the older teams in the league and we have 3 DPs. If we’re not trying to win now, or go deep in the playoffs, then what are we doing?

    Win now mode? Really?

We just made a coaching change, and we have basically the same roster that just missed the playoffs two seasons running. Signing a 38-year-old head case backup striker isn’t going to fast-forward us into the Conference Final.

I know people didn’t like Porter’s tactics, but even if Nancy turns out to be a huge improvement, we still don’t know if the pieces we have are going to fit into his ideas, and some of that increased effectiveness (if it happens) could still be lessened by the fact that our older players are a year older.

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’m NOT under the impression that we’re equipped for a playoff run at this point. To me, we’re a team that is going to battle just to get in and then hope for the best.
