Well, we are out. It is officially off-season. And the MLS Player's Union site just put out it's updated salary report, so I thought it would be a good time for an update. We can start there for the off-season. We have an expansion draft happening soon as well. I still have some confusion over HG and INT status for some guys, so any light anyone can shed would be great. I. Senior Roster (1-20). 20 of 20. Salary Cap = $4,900,000. Don't have to use spots 19, 20. Min Budget charged imputed to cap if use less than 18. Max budget charge is $612,500. Both guys and Hurtado are senior min players ($84k) and any could be either Senior or Supplemental 21-24. I went with the 2 guys who play more/make the 18 more. -------------------- II. Supplemental Roster (21-30) (9 of 10) Do not count towards salary cap. Max of 10 players, subject to Season Ending Injured List, Injured List, and Loan Exceptions. All Generation adidas players are Supplemental for their initial contract. A. Spots 21-24. (Supplemental). 3 of 4. Must earn at least the Senior Min salary of $84,000. Can be: a) Senior Min players, b) Generation Adidas players, c) designated Super dtaft eligible players, or d) HGs/HGs earning more than the Sen Min subject to HG Player Subsidy (up to $125 k more than Senior Min salary of $84k). All three make the Senior Minimum of $84k. Schulte was both Super draft eligible and GA. It makes no sense for him, or any of the HGs making a bigger salary (Etienne, Morris), to take a Senior spot. The rest of the roster is all HGs (though J. Morris is not listed as one), so any of them could be on any of the Supplemental Rosters. Except that Etienne is too old to be 25-28 or lower. He was born in '96. 25-28 guys have to be 24 or younger at some point of the league year (2022). He's been 25 all year and turns 26 later. Of all the HGs, he has to be the 21-24 guy, no age limit. IDK what JRR makes, but he counts as a domestic player, like Fraser, via HG rule. MLS/Crew list him as a 21-24 guy, but I think this is wrong, as stated above. ----------------------------- B. Slots 25-28. (Reserve). 4 of 4. Must make at least the Reserve Min salary of $65,500. Can be: a) Reserve Min Players (24 or younger during league year), b) Homegrown Players earning more than Reserve Min subject to HG Player subsidy, or C) GA players earning the Res Min Salary. And if MLS/Crew are correct that J. Morris is NOT a HG, he has to be 25-28 due to his salary/non-HG status. ---------------------------------- C. Slots 29-30. (Homegrown Reserve). Must be filled with HGs earning the Reserve Min salary or HGs earning more than the Reserve Min ($65,500) subject to HG Player Subsidy. Rank, Player, Pos, Age,DOB, HT, WT, Nat, Desig(s), Base $$/Guar $$ 29. Zawadzki, M, 22, 4/21/00, 6'0", 160, USA, HG, $84k/$89k. Th '23/O '24, '25. 30. Young DP 21-23 = $200,000. 20 & under = $150k. Sec Window = $150k. DP = Zelarayan, Nagbe. Young DP = Cucho. Max Budget Charge = $622,500 (DP). Can be bought down with TAM if under $1.6125 mil. No mention of GAM buy down-ceiling. Charge if joins after 2nd window opens = $312,250. Young DP Budget Charge (23 or under) = $200,000. If 20 or under: $150,000. --------------------------- VI. U22 Initiative Players (1 of 3) Matan. You get 3 slots if 3rd DP unused or is under TAM buy-down threshold. Player can continue to occupy a U22 slot until age 25 as long as on 1st contract. MLS has Yeboah incorrectly here, as he is 24. Or at least I think it is incorrect. ------------------- VII. Green Card Holders = 3 (4, +2 more) Mensah, de Lima (Artur), Molino. (Santos + 2?) Santos rumored to get his soon. There has to be 2 more, as we have 11 guys who are/were internationals. -------- IX. International Roster Spots: 11 of 8. Cucho, Zelarayan, Santos, Room, Moreira, Degenek, Yeboah, Diaz, Matan, Igbekeme, Farsi. MLS not currently counting Santos, Diaz, Moreira, or Igbekeme (not even on roster). ------------ X. HomeGrowns: 7. A. Morris, Etienne Jr., Parente, Zawadzki, Sands, J. Morris. ---------------- MLS/Crew do not list J. Morris as a HG, but it was reported he acquired his HG rights when he signed. Russell-Rowe is also a HG, and thus counts as a domestic player, even though he is from Canada. ------------------------------ https://www.massivereport.com/2022/...der-jake-morris-from-seattle-sounders-academy https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/columbus-crew-sign-crew-2-forward-jacen-russell-rowe XI. Crew 2 1. Aidan Wolf, AM, Crew Academy, USA. 2. Michael Vang, M, 21, 5/13/00, 5'8", USA (Forward Madison). 3. Hopefully I will get off my butt and do it soon.
Well if Cucho is a young DP technically we can add another . Just imagine if Nagbe wasn’t a DP we could get dos ! It was originally stated teams could sign up to three U-22 players, but it’s dependent on the clubs current DP situation. If a club has one “young DP” or a DP that is a TAM level player (max salary $1,612,500 for 2021), they can sign three U-22 players. If they have three “true” DPs, they can only sign one U-22 player. The math just got more complicated. If Bez is a wizard then make it happen don’t double down on the roster is good enough bullshit. We need a DP winger and let Diaz come off the bench ass a dangerous substitute
No. A Young DP counts as one of the 3 DPs you can have on an MLS roster. Assuming Nagbe, Lucas and Cucho are on the roster next year, we’ll already have 3 DPs, and presumably all will make beyond the threshold allowed to potentially buy them down to below DP status.
Remember the off-season where we let go of most of the 2008 cup winning roster...I hope for something along those lines. Taking the place of Guillermo will be Nagbe.
I don't see us paying him $1.8M to go away. Unless we can trade him to someone, likely having to pick up some of his salary in order to do so, I think he's on our roster for 2023. We have a lot of expensive over 30 players. I agree with @Bill Archer that it is very likely time to really turn the roster over. I'm just not sure how feasible it will be with the contract situations for these guys on the back side of their careers.
Expensive older players, true. But on the other end of the spectrum, our attempts to take advantage of the U22 rule have been an effing train wreck. Matan and Yeboah? Players like that allow you to splash some money on acquisition fees, but barely dent the roster budget. And (assuming our DPs stay the same) we can only have one U22 player on the roster next year, right? Honestly, I haven't paid attention to the rest of the league's U22 signings. How well did other teams do?
One of the many reasons that this thread in particular continues to be the best source of as accurate as it can be info on our roster.
https://www.massivereport.com/2022/...t=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter Roster update is out. Lot of deadweight still on the roster for next year
Here's the official team announcement: https://www.columbuscrew.com/news/columbus-crew-announces-end-of-2022-roster-decisions
Alright I'm on the fire bez train now They said they are still in negotiations with some contract declined players, but that tweet.
The thing to keep in mind re: Santos, is that he is a free agent. He may have asked to leave. Why stay, with no coach and no sense of the position you'll play next year? Other than Santos, there are no real surprises in that list for me. I assume we'll be looking to trade some of these players over the off-season (like a keeper). I'm sure we're working to sign Etienne. But I'm guessing we're stuck with Matan. I checked his on-loan stats: - appeared in six games, and has never played more than 45 minutes in any of them; - not in the squad for the last five matches; also not in the squad for two recent Romanian cup matches (is he injured, or just not good enough?) - true to form, no goals or assists At least he's not much of a salary budget hit.
Santos was a solid player who could play multiple positions. His age and salary are certainly a factor here but I’d have liked to have him back.
Santos will be turning 35 at the start of next season. The only way the club was going to bring him back would be on a one year contract with significantly reduced pay. I wouldn't be surprised if Pedro and his wife are ready to move back to Portugal to be close to family. They just announced they are pregnant with their 3 child so that probably plays a part in it as well.
When I check a few weeks back, I think Matan came off with an injury, but I am not confident. I would have declined Nagbe's option unless there is a salary reduction already written in or there's a potential trade available. And Scott was replaced as the Crew 2 keeper, so I think he will be deadweight.
I was on the dump Nagbe train, but honestly what other options were available? A winger and LB are much higher needs so unless they wanted to run out a Morris/Artur (which is a bit redundant ) combo every game they had to bring him back
