Making mini-headlines this morning, San Jose's GK search continues with (retired) former Canadian international and EPL 'keeper Craig Forrest reported here as the latest target.
Interesting...I remember him doing some stella stuff for Ipswich..would be a good move IF he can get back to fitness and form....not convinced right now though -Richard
Yup...Interestingly enough both former ITFC player of the year. FY in 87 I believe and Forrest in 94/95 when they were in the Premiership. Yallop was the starting Full Back that Season. And for some more useless information the current reigning player of the year at Ipswich is Mark Venus, who is from my home town and started his career for the mighty Hartlepool United!! -Richard
Well, he was the guy, Canada should be thankful for winning the CONCACAF Cup. As far as I remember, semifinal game and (possibly) final game was tied 0:0 and decided on penalty shoot-out.
My focus wasn't on why he was out of work, but that he was not playing. We need a keeper that is in form. When has he last played? Maybe Frank feels that his experience will allow him to get back into the game quickly. How much is he going to cost us? If he was still playing in the EPL before the testicular cancer, I would guess that he wouldn't come cheap.
"Previous Clubs: West Ham United England Premier League 1997 - 2002 Chelsea England Premier League 1996 - 1997 loan Ipswich England Premier League & Div. 1 1987 - 1997 Colchester United England Division 3 1989 loan" Well, he's just had a long offseason.
How old is the guy? I read an article on Planetfootball.com, but I don't remember seeing a name. If he's a former Premiereship keeper, he would be great. Age isn't nearly as important a factor keepers. Men, do check for testicular cancer each day, maybe even each hour. You just don't know when it could pop up. If you are unsure what to look for, sjqf and BriFanatic will be available to check you out!
Which is exactly why we should laugh at this silly RUMOR. He's not young and he already retired. He' probably busy working at becoming a store manager at Horton's, not trying out for the eQuakes.
Which is exactly why we should not dismiss this as merely rumour. Many athletes have beaten testicular cancer and continue to perform (on the field, l_d_b) at top level. My only questions at this point would be age and rust. Otherwise, bring him on!
my favorite quote from the canadian bio... Strengths: Craig Forrest is god. Weaknesses: God has no weaknesses ... he must have been a great player when healthy. if he is fit, then suite him up i say. keepers can go until their late 30s so he can probably still compete.
Forrest info Canada's #1 keeper for the last 10 years, and was the hero of Canada's 2000 Gold Cup championship. Named as keeper of the tournament, stopped PKs against T&T in the semifinal (take that Jack Warner) and against Colombia in the final. Memorable moment as Bladder, L'il Jack Horner et al are reluctantly digging out the hardware for the Canadian team, his teammates break into an improvised medley of 'Alouette' followed by 'There's only one Craig Forrest'. Seriously, was very good for Canada and certainly Canada was hurting when he missed the WC qualifying that left Canada out of the hex. Still relatively young for a goalkeeper. A very good guy for the media and excellent presence between the pipes. If he's contemplating a comeback, he is definitely worth a look.
Damn you Spartacus....I was so gonna bust out my bestest sexual inuendo schtick....it's what I do, please don't take that from me.
Forrest will win your hearts!!!! Being the last line of defence for Canada is not an easy task. He was the SINGLE REASON they won the Gold Cup a couple of years back. His shot totals in some of those matches were NHL like. He was the backbone of the National Team - without him things (it is possible btw) would be much much worse for the Canucks. Above all else you won't find many players nicer than the Gentle Giant. I wish him all the best.
