Yes, but don't you see? If we were to stop spending vast sums and wasting inordinate effort on this completely ineffective approach to drug control, every 10-year old in the country would be a dead-eyed junkie within minutes. .

Actually, I thought a lot of the Observer's article was weak. Saying "crack ... sure can be nasty" is hardly revelatory journalism. And quotes from "Mothers against Guns" on what to do about it under the headline "What the Experts say" is also not the most engaging take on the matter.

Nonetheless, I agree with the general sentiment that prohibition and criminalisation of drugs and drug users is daft, irrespective of my "sensibilities". If something does not work, has never worked and is not ever going to work, then stop doing it and come up with a new idea. That basic act of logic transcends anything as banal as right-wing/left-wing and all that hooey. Or rather, it should, but it doesn't. Because the majority of people who insist that the correct approach is the one that is a proven, consistent failure do tend to come from the conservative end of the political spectrum.

As to the Tory/Islam piece, I was thinking about that last night and marvelling anew at how utterly devoid of intelligence it was.

Fair enough, I respect your haughty opinion of the media and politcs in general. Now about the Beeb... :D
