There is significant crossover / capture of Mormons into that culture. I’m not blaming Mormon culture/theology for this particular type of radical and willful rejection of govt authority, although “we” naturally have a lot of skepticism of govt. in general, for some very obvious reasons when you investigate the history. My implication is that Mormons, whom people keep hoping will break from the Trump fever dream, or the traditional conservative fever dream, will disappoint. There have more recently been statements from top church leaders to tone down the rhetoric and not demonize immigrants, but those directives don’t hold much sway when it comes to the greater culture wars and voting. At least not yet.
My feeling is those statements are solely for outreach / missionary work - tone down the rhetoric to remove barriers to conversion. It's similar to how in one of my more recent conversations with a LDS missionary he stressed that the LDS church is totally ok with gays (provided you don't act on it).
I disagreed with him and had many examples. He even mentioned, sadly enough, that one of his gay Mormon friends had just committed suicide, which really solidified the point I was making.
So, uh, when we starting the bird flu thread? US suffers first severe human case of bird flu; California declares emergency https://www.reuters.com/business/he...rms-first-severe-case-bird-flu-us-2024-12-18/
When a person catches it from a person. So not yet. But it does look a bit like the God of the Old Testament is sending plagues whenever Trump is elected.
I’m staying on top of this. It is a large reason why eggs are so pricey. Yes, when it goes human-to-human with more than a couple isolated cases, we’ll start one up. There is a lot of room for criticism about the Covid lockdowns, but one undeniable thing is that they completely worked against flu transmission. One less-common strain of flu might have even become extinct due to them! That, and we already have vast experience with flu vaccines. So, although it still will be ugly, I have a good deal of hope that we actually might make it out OK.
You misspelled Bidenomoics. Caught a story yesterday or Monday about a case with unknown/unclear transmission.
But also Republican states: "Send that federal tax-paid help now! We're 15 feet under water! We're sorry we shat upon socialism! We need government handouts!"
Dunno if to wait for the thread start until the infection is from human to human is really a good idea. There are already concerns about the fast spread among mammal species (40 in a short time) and the unexpected one was in cows. So the fact that a species so close to us, and worse, also close to mice and rats, for jumping species, could be a reason to jumpstart it already.
I'm surprised with your optimism. The guy who would be running the response believes vaccines kill more people than disease. He doesn't want public health investigating infectious diseases, only chronic illnesses (never mind many chronic problems are because of infectious diseases...). I'd be buying toilet paper.
I was talking to a couple of friends this week and we were all hoping this country and the world do not face an other pandemic....If that happens, we will definitely be SOL, specially with this lunatic RJK jr. God helps us....
Seems more a matter of when than if at this point. There will likely be an outbreak (measles, flu, ...) that can easily spread through the US if people are shunning vaccines, and then from the US to the world.
As far as I understand, the general consensus of epidemiologists is that there will be another epidemic/pandemic regardless of how prepared we are. RFK Jr. is just making that more likely.
