My sister in England got her first Pfizer jab this past week. She said it went well, mostly just arm soreness and a bit of fatigue that day. But, she was quite alarmed by the number of nurses declining a jab though. I'm hoping people come around and it becomes monkey see, monkey do, but obtaining herd immunity is definitely going to be a massive challenge for every country.
I've mentioned elsewhere that there is a lot of people in healthcare that don't believe in vaccines. They will believe in the new age wellness influencer crap. My employers are mentioning getting a system set up for us to have a vaccine.
Thanks, we desperately need it in the smaller developing countries. They don't have the purchasing power of the more developed nations so are last in line to get vaccines.
Pretty solid article in the NYT about the Janssen vaccine, an challenges with production. You also see that they started to set up production facilities in spring 2020. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/13/health/covid-vaccine-johnson-johnson.html
Trevor Bedford has another good thread on the emergence of a number of variants that are increasingly infectious and are raising concerns about making the vaccine's less effective. The tweet below is probably the most interesting part as I hadn't heard it before. He's hypothesizing that the mutations are because of chronic covid cases where the virus is mutating due to pressure being put on the virus by the body's immune system. My (highly speculative!) hypothesis is that the emergence of these variant viruses arises in cases of chronic infection during which the immune system places great pressure on the virus to escape immunity and the virus does so by getting really good at getting into cells. 11/19— Trevor Bedford (@trvrb) January 14, 2021
The layoffs are most likely a result of companies trying to make their bottom lines look better for EOFY. We had to lay people off a week before Christmas because our clients were making cuts at the end of the year to make numbers look better.
What in the actual ******** is going on in Spain? They just exploded for new cases the last 2 or 3 days. Huge increases. The said yesterday had about 5k cases of back reporting, and perhaps today does too. But even after deducting that, it's a very alarming spike. Has B117 spread its wings yet again?
One thing I find interesting about these variants is that they are all occurring in countries where the coronavirus is running rampant, which makes me wonder where the US variant is. According to Bedford, chronic covid is extremely rare, so it makes sense that in countries where it is spreading quickly you'd find more people that have chronic covid and that this means a better chance of a variant evolving.. One thing I saw a couple of weeks ago when the UK variant was first identified was that the UK was mapping the genome on as many of the positive cases they could, while the US isn't necessarily doing. Additionally, the UK is releasing the results of that mapping in only a few days after it was collected, while the US is running a week or more behind on the few mappings they do perform.
My wife got her first shot on Monday. She told me that about forty percent of the people she supervises, when offered the vaccine, chose not to take it. This is at a hospital in San Francisco - UCSF Medical Center - and with a very diverse crew. Many people simply don't trust the government and they don't trust the pharmaceutical companies.
We are so screwed... The US will never get covid under control at this rate.. If only 60% of medical professionals are refusing to get a vaccination, it is going to be much lower among the general population..
We are in so much trouble! Xmas/New Year's boom, and it sounds like the virus has mutated enough in response to human immune system to cause an even worse 2nd wave. The vaccine probably doesn't provide immunity for more than a year, even if that.
My wife got vaccinated Tuesday and didn't mention any large amount of people at her hospital not getting shots.
From what I’ve seen in a few articles and tweets is that 60% vaccination rate is roughly the rate for healthcare workers. With many hospitals requiring their workers to be up to date on vaccines, including flu, one would think anti-vaxxers would be a pretty low percentage..
I got vaccinated right before Christmas. Other than a little arm soreness and Bill Gates trying to communicate with me telepathically I am fine. Got my second dose lined up for inauguration day, and I hear it comes with built in 5g.
I think there are a couple of reasons you may not want to take the vaccine. 1 - General unhealthy distrust of vaccines/Gov/Pharma/Bill Gates. 2 - The vaccine is new and people may want to wait a bit to feel safer since it was developed very fast. Basically let others be the guinea pigs first. Honestly I can understand the 2nd reason.
About the UK and SA variant it is said people infected with it have a far higher virus load in their throats, thus spreading more viruses, but also that the virus itself has improved it's spikes to be more successful in penetrating human cells. So a double whammy. Carehome in the Netherlands with a large outbreak of the UK-virus.
You are in the Bay Area, the home of new age whoo whoo hippies. Given that I've seen Biden get the vaccine, I trust it. I can see why minorities are rightfully distrustful, but whenever I hear a well off white person say it, it's usually something about feeling and natural type things.
