I'm guessing that owing to Tarantino, many people will primarily or only know this from the Nancy Sinatra version.
My son and I have had this conversation many times over the years, and a couple of weeks ago I thought of posting the same query. I was going to do it in the P&CE music thread, but here works too! Kudos. The topic came up last week when son and I were talking about Dave Edmunds' cover of Elvis' Girls Talk. I remember loving the cover more back in high school, though Edmunds released his version before Elvis did.. So I listened to it four or five times a weekend ago, and darn, didn't like it as much as I remembered. I think I prefer the Linda Ronstadt version the most, but having listened to all of them, I think Ronstadt really covered Edmunds as opposed to covering Elvis. And Edmunds: Elvis Costello:
Hardy is hardly the only one who has covered Celentano (I think just about every European country must have its version), but her version is probably the most well-known cover and must definitely be one of the earliest. I think the melody fits her voice very well. Another case where I suspect many don't know it's a cover and not her original song.
Modest success when Gainsbourg released it, even in his native France. Later became more appreciated, mostly because a synthpop cover made by Jo Lemaire + Flouze did become a (modest) hit in Europe. Gainsbourg's song itself was a reference to a poem by Verlaine, so there is another layer to this nesting doll.
I'm not one to be on #teamcover or #teamoriginal, but I happen to like "I'm on Fire" by Low. For whatever reason, I'm not crazy about Bruce (except his general persona).
Somewhere Over the Rainbow Judy Garland (1939) Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole (1990) I actually only heard this version a couple of times as a buffer on a radio program I was listening to, but I really like it.
I can't believe it took me this long to remember this one. I Think We're Alone Now Tommy James & The Shondells (1967) Tiffany (1987)
Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels) Jim Croce (1972) Joshua Turner, Carson McKee, Reina Del Cid (Elle Cordova), & Toni Lindgren (2019)
I was looking at a list of the top songs from 50 years ago ('74) and I was surprised how many of them I just did not like. (May explain why I started going off into different artists/genres.) Anyway, one of them was a remake of an earlier hit: B J Thomas - 1968 Blue Swede - 1974 Did not care for the '74 version.
Joy Division - Dead Souls NIN - Dead Souls As a huge NIN fan and a fan of the “Crow” movie (remake just announced) and Soundtrack this one is an all timer for me.
Love hurts is a song covered by several artists/groups. my favourite cover is this one by Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris and then there's this one:
Nope. While it is a very good cover and one of the better Nine in Nails efforts, Trent Rezner's scratchiness doesn't cut it when compared to Ian Curtis. Good version, but not better.
Um the title of this thread has the word rivaled in it. Not horrifically misguided. If we have a thread instead of bad covers, the Jam’s Heatwave is awful.
Death Cab’s Ben Gibbard does Alvvays’ Marry Me Archie. The latter is a fantastic piece of bubblegum pop. Gibbard’s version isn’t as Brady Bunch The OG
