Well done to ESPN NEWS Well done to ESPN News Dept. They covered the Beckham story like a breaking sports story. They had their top man tommy Smyth at the Zone in NY to report. Is this a new angle from ESPN. Or maybe they have a producer who sees the value of soccer storys. Hopefully they will give even more coverage to our fav sport. Lets say I think it is a great start.
If we're going to praise them for covering Becks, we have to damn them for NOT covering the one year anniversary of the US defeating Mexico in the World Cup. ESPN sucks!!!
i posted in the MLS news forum too that the storyappeared on the front page of the Boston Globe's site.
Despite the ramblings of that guy at the New York Post, I think Beckham's trip to the US did help generate interest in him here, though I suppose it depends on what one's expectations were. Maybe the Post guy figured since he wasn't regarded as the second coming of Michael Jordan here there must not be any interest in him. Or maybe he wrote that article before Beckham even got here. In any case, I've heard more about Beckham here in the last couple months than I've heard about any soccer player in recent memory.
When Beckham was here he pre-taped a couple of programs (interviews) that will air in the USA just before the tour. I guess they will either dump them or do a hefty editing job or just state what happened and go ahead with them.
Just saw a 1.5 minute story on Becks on ESPNews; Tommy Smyth gave a some good points, and lots of video of Becks. Good stuff.
Beckham makes CNN front page Interesting that CNNs front page is reporting on Beckhams transfer to Real. That is somewhat surprising to me. http://www.cnn.com/
I think it really shouldn't be. Beckham sorta transends sports. He's really more of a pop icon, especially in this country. Though, he is one of the few big names in soccer who can perk up the US media. Hopefully, in the future, he won't be the only one.
interestingly, this made front page of Yahoo and MSNBC. I also saw a blurb on CNN Headline news...what is this world coming to!
It was given as one of "Today's Top Headlines" on regular CNN TV today, also, at the top of the hour a few times. The end is near.
Becks is worthy front-page material. I mean, have you seen the free kicks he served in "Bend it like Beckam"??
Re: Beckham makes CNN front page Why is it surprising? This story has been on Yahoo's front page off and on since the dance started. He was on the cover of USA Today a few weeeks ago. It's not surprising that a big story is getting coverage.
Holy crap lol My dad came home from work yesterday, and he always has an "interesting soccer fact' and he told me that beckham went to real at first i didn't believe him... but... hot damn. cool.
Re: Re: Beckham makes CNN front page There was an obvious coordinated PR campaign associated with his trip to the US. If his recent semi-high profile has staying power, then I will be impressed. Right now its just the result of a very good PR firm getting him exposure in the mainstream press.
Over here the coverage has been totally OTT. News headlines, not sports , have mentioned Beckham every day for the last week. Last Night the top three stories on the BBC 10 O'clock news were. 1) Parliamentary inquiry into war on Iraq. 2) Important talk by Blair on the future of Britain. 3) Beckham. No news about anything else more important. I'm a big football & ManU fan but this is a sports story, nothing more.
ESPN Radio right now. Talking about Beckham. Then next segment bringing on Tommy Smyth and Ray Hudson.
Man this is great i cant wait to hear how muchTony Kornheiser loves soccer..i think he is a huge soccer fan but is having trouble coming to grips with his love for the sport
