We're all aware of the atrists that totally butcher great songs (i.e. Puff Daddy), but there's a few cover songs out there that are actually better than the original.

    - I like Bush's cover of The 'Stones "Wild Horses", that's pretty cool.
    - Zebrahead did a great cover of that incredibly annoying song by the Spice Girls "Wannabe."
    - Another crappy pop song that was turned cool in a cover was Fountains of Wayne did "Baby one more time", ya know, Britney's first hit? It's amazing how good songs can be when real artists with talent actually perform.
    - A perfect Circle's cover of Ozzy's Diary of a Madman was really great IMO.
    - Cover I've most enjoyed would probably be Goldfinger's "99 red Balloons", that song F'ing rocks!
    - The whole "Music for the Masses" Depeche Mode CD was great, (and no, I am completely heterosexual), and my favorite off of that was Enjoy the Silence.
    - Nine Inch Nails did a great cover of "Get Down make Love" from Queen.
    - I hate The Grateful Dead, and love Sublime, so obviously I'm gonna list scarlet begonias here.
    - "Tainted Love" by The Living End made an 80's peice of crap a pretty cool song.
    - I guess this can kind of be thrown in here, but Vanilla Ice's hardcore remake of Ice Ice Baby was pretty rockin too.
    - While I don't think the covers are better than the originals, I love Pearl Jam, and I love The Who, so naturally Eddie Vedder's fascination with doing Who covers are pretty cool in my opinion.

That's about all that immediately pop into my head.

I had no idea this was a cover.

I posted these in the last reincarnation of the thread, but here goes:
Fiona Apple - "Across the Universe"
Joan Jett - "I Love Rock 'N Roll"
Ben Folds Five - country version of "Champagne Supernova"
    Cake - "I Will Survive"
Radiohead - "Nobody Does It Better"
Rage Against the Machine - "Renegades of Funk"
    Gipsy Kings - "Hotel California"
    [kidding]
Electric Light Orchestra - "Beethoven's Fifth"

Are you absolutely positive The Living End did that song? As in, owning a cd that has it on it? That is not their singer's voice on the mp3 I have of it. It says it's Social D, but I know for sure it's not. It's a great song, though, and I wished I know who did it.

Mike Ness's cover of 'Don't Think Twice' is a great song, as is Social Distortion's cover of 'Ring of Fire'.

Goldfinger's cover of the Cure's 'Just Like Heaven' is better than the original, but could have been much better.

Pennywise's cover of 'Stand by Me' is a good song, even though I don't like Pennywise.

Puddle of Mudd's Nirvana cover on 'She Hates Me' is great.

Oh, that's right, they claim they wrote it themselves. Sounds too much like Nirvana to me.

Oh, and I forgot possibly the best cover ever. It took a freaking *rap* song and it made it music. Ladies and gentlemen, if you have never heard the Gourds cover "Gin and Juice' go find it right now!

Great White's cover of "Once Bitten Twice Shy" is miles better than the original.

Another vote for "Because the Night."

Also, although this is blasphemy to some, I like Reel Big Fish's "Take on Me" better than A-Ha's.

My favorite punk cover is far and away No Use For a Name's version of Turning Japanese.

Also, Moby's covers of That's When I Reach For My Revolver and New Dawn Fades are pretty good. And while Metallica's numerous covers are sort of hit and miss, the one that they really took and made their own is Am I Evil.

It's been done several times, but I think GnR's is the best of the lot

    Eve6 - Leaving on a jet plane

Goldfinger's got several good covers including 99 red balloons and the song at the end of Adam Sandler's Waterboy.

Reel Big Fish did a cover of Sublime's Boss DJ and while it's not better than the original it's still pretty good for a cover.

    Weird Al - Bohemian Rhapsody

The Reel Big Fish cover of "Boys don't cry" is a damn good cover. It's definitely much more fun than the original.

Me first and the gimme gimmies - "different drum".....not better than the original, but I enjoy it very much

Another vote for Dynamite Hack's "boyz in the hood" and Goldfinger's "99 Red balloons"
