The one reason I hate sports as a business. My last holdover from my favorites from the first season, Willie got waived. Don't get me wrong, I like Fotop and Lucks and the others, but Willie was cool. Willie would always be the last player out signing autographs after a game.

Sorry Willie. Hope to see you soon.

I actually enjoyed watching Staci play, She is great! (and I don't say that about many courage players, ok only 2 actually 3 now)! So good luck Staci!

    Willie Got Waived

I agree with you Oddball#34. I'm happy for Brooke and Katie, but I really feel bad for Willie. :( I'm also surprised to find out that another rookie, Meghan, retired. I wish her the best of luck with her new position as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana.

    Sherrill Kester Waived By Spirit

After Sherrill Kester made it known publicly that she would rather play for the Courage, it was no great surprise to find out that she was one of the players that the Spirit waived today. I don't think that the Courage will select Sherrill in the Waivers Draft on Monday, but if no other team takes her, Carolina will probably invite her to try-out for the team.

It will be extremely difficult for Sherrill to make the 16 player roster of the Courage, but she might still be able to earn a spot with the team either as a reserve or as a developmental player. Also if Hege Riise, Unni Lehn, & TR are away on national team duty at the same time, the Courage might need to sign a midfielder to a temporary contract. I would think that a player with WUSA experience who is living in the Triangle Area will probably get first consideration for such an opportunity.

    Willie With the Spirit?

I would love to see Willie get picked up by the San Diego Spirit (aka UNC West). ;) Since the Spirit traded Anna Kraus and waived Fan, they are going to need to acquire some defenders. At the very least Willie could give San Diego a much needed defensive lift coming off of the bench. I'll never forget what a great job she did in those final few minutes of the Founder's Cup Final. :)

  7. since im already angry enough im not gonna crash the coaching staff right now, but Willie man i wish you the best of luck out there, and ill really miss you alot!

I feel badly for you and really hope that Willie gets picked up by another club on Monday, hopefully San Diego. When I hear about someone's favorite player getting waived it brings back for me that sick feeling I had in November 2001, when I found out that Bente Nordby had been waived by the Spirit. :(

    Minna Mustonen Also Waived

As many of us expected, Minna Mustonen was also waived today.
Kim was also waived today so the Power-Courage trade was basically a wash. Perhaps Kim will still get invited to try-out for the Power.

  10. The waivers were BS and BS doesnt stand for Big Soccer!

    Status of Reserve Players

Along with Wilson and Mustonen, the players whose options were not exercised, I'm guessing that the Courage reserve players will also be available in Monday's draft as will all of the other reserves. As I recall, the New York Power's Rachel Hoffman was the first to go from reserve player to roster status and I know that Carly Smolak also went from being a reserve to a backup keeper on the roster and then eventually went on to become a starter.

also mentioned in the article was that meghan anderson is retiring...does anyone know why? i would assume for personal reasons to that sort?

i remember reading right after boyd got drafted by the courage that she was excited to reunite with her former 'husker teammate and play with her, but i guess that didn't quite pan out! lol

    Meghan's Retirement

Here's what the Courage article said about Meghan:

  15. ok im not gettin this

we waived willie, and minna, and meghan retired so as of now we have 14 players on the roster, if carla is gonna have her baby, then shouldnt in the near future she would be at the stage where she can not play so takin her off the roster equals 13 players and we have room for five more players. If meghan retired than y did we have to waive two people?

The only player that I knew the Courage would have to waive was Minna because she was going to put them over the limit for international players. Since Meghan retired I am really surprised that Willie got waived. Maybe this was done to save some money against the salary cap?

If Staci is invited to camp, she might still have a good chance to at least make the team as a reserve or a developmental player (whatever that means). If Carla ends up deciding not to play this season then I think Staci could even have a decent chance of making the Courage roster again.

I was thinking about that too when I first saw that Meghan had retired. Too bad that Meghan didn't have a chance to spend any time with Breanna in the Triangle Area and help her get adjusted. :(

    Question For Elaine

Since I helped you answer your question, perhaps you can help me out with some information about a couple of Canadian players who are currently in Norway. ;) Their names are Randee Hermus and Christina Kiss and they are getting a tryout with the club Fløya which is the same club that is also rumored to have some interest in Minna Mustonen.

    Canadians Arriving In Norway Today

Here's my stab at a very rough translation of the first couple of paragraphs of the article that was posted at the "toppserien.com" site today:

Randee Hermus and Christina Kiss come to Tromsø Friday and receive a chance during this weekend to wear the Fløya uniform.

Cecilie Olsen and the rest of the Fløya women meet Trondheims-Ørn in two indoor matches at Skarphallen this weekend. At that time Hermus and Kiss will have a chance to show that they are good enough for the Norwegian "Topp" Women's League.

They will have traveled 20 hours when they arrive this evening so they won't receive much playing time in the first match against Ørn, but during Sunday's match they will. Both players will stay her until next weekend.

    Canadian Training Camp

Wasn't this training camp held in Florida? So did Breanna go back to Nebraska to get prepared for her big move to North Carolina?

    ooo!! how exciting :)

now it makes sense why kristina said to me that she wouldn't be home until at earliest march 22nd. i would have thought she'd go home after the florida training camp, but with this little "detour" she'll be in europe until after the algarve cup!!!

nordby1, if there are any other articles about them at any norge sites, please do share (over in the team canada thread, since this is the courage boards). i think i need to brush up on my norwegian now ;) lol (like i did my swedish when a player was playing in the swedish league!)

i don't know about the level of play in the league in norway, but both randee and kristina are top-notch players. randee is a defender with speed while kristina is a midfielder with tons of vision and has great texture on her balls etc.

looking foward to see how this pans out for them!

    Re: Canadian Training Camp

from what i know, she went back to lincoln and should be moving to carolina later this month?? something to that sort. i think she should be moving before the algarve cup, because i don't think there will be time for something as big of a deal as a move after algarve!
