Nancy is the only L2 team that avoided the first round. I dont know why. Maybe someone can fill me in. I think there's usually 4 National teams invited but this year there's only 3 so that might have something to do with it.

they've been dispensed from first round action because they were 18th in L1 last year. the format of this year's competition is here.

    Clermont (0) - Tours (1)"Billy Ketkeophomphone"

    they really wanted to win.

the monegasques too... but only from about the 70th minute on. up to then they played like the victory was going to just plop into their mouths like a roast pigeon. they thought it was in the fine print of their contracts. they're all on the phone to their agents this morning.

i was at OL-SdR and like gourcuff said, it's crazy that lyon had to suffer to the end, they were really good and just gave up two loopy goals; they really need to cut that out.

gonalons excellent, umtiti, bedimo and zeffane all very good (mehdi has become our new first choice RB or i'm much mistaken) but MOTM was yoyo. his shot was royal, but his work on lacazette's goal was intergalactic.

Yeah to me the automatic Europa League spot makes it interesting because we could have a team that qualifies for the EL due to finishing 4th and that same team could win the league cup if its Nantes or OM especially. I guess I dont mind who wins it as long as its not PSG, Troyes, or Evian. Remember how badly we need Uefa points.

what if PSG does win it?? I'm assuming the 2nd placed team earns the EL birth?? but what if the 2nd placed team is already in the EL via standings in the table? lol.

    hang on to your hats:

the winner of the Coupe de la Ligue gets a spot in the 3rd qualifying round for the next Europa Ligue. If the cupwinner has qualified through league standings for either european cup, this spot goes down the ladder of the league standings. there is no case where the losing finalist is given an EL spot.

The winner of the Coupe de France gets a spot in the group phase of the next EL. If the winner of this cup qualifies via league standings for the Champions League, the 4th place team in the championship gets this group spot, the winner of the League Cup gets the EL playoff spot that would have gone to the 4th place team, and the losing finalist of the Coupe de France gets the League Cup winner's 3rd QR spot.

Ludovic Giuly is not retired. He is playing for a club in the CFA called Chasselay and they beat Istres from Ligue 2 in the Coupe de France on penalties and he scored a goal.

we keep close tabs on ludo here, and there was even talk about him coming back a la sidney (but less serious). MDA chasselay is a pretty good club and in the chic mont d'or area i think giuly lives. he's been active in the club for a long time: that's where he started before he entered the OL academy! their stadium is named after him!

back in august he got 2 goals and an assist to beat... OL reserves (!) who are having a tough season since so many of the players that normally would make them dominate their group are in the A squad.

note that jerome leroy was playing for istres so this match must have been a lot of fun to watch.

the MDA on these shirts (not the ones used for yesterday's match) is both the present official name of the club after two neighboring clubs merged, and a local chain of appliance stores that has been a longtime sponsor of OL.

a last note, alain caveglia, another iconic player from Ol's past is also involved with the local club he grew up with AS Minguettes. he was too old to play for their flagship team but before he became sports director at HAC he won a couple of trophies with their veterans (O35) and he's still vice-president or something like that.

i found these pics of MDA Chasselay - Istres:

    MDA 1.JPG
the two famous captains front and center just after the cheesy bothh teams together pic that, along with 50-50 "friendship" scarves is one of the growing plagues of the modern game. no idea what the story is on ludo's t-shirt.

    MDA 2.JPG
just to give an idea of the bucolic setting.

    MDA 3.JPG
ludo off and running (his jerseys don't fit any better than at OL). jerome leroy drawing a bead on his ankle and...

    MDA 4.JPG
    bingo! down goes the champ!

    MDA 5.JPG
but the joy at the end is for the locals.

OL TCOB in the MMA against la suze to advance. with any luck we'll draw MDA! i'd get a kick out of going there (metro D then bus 61) but they'd probably play in gerland, no way stade ludovic giuly would be homologated for a match like that.
