Could CONMEBOL live with 5 guaranteed places if there were 12 nations instead of 10?

    can not play with geography!

is only 10 nations (guyana and suriman do not have a federation that runs a national team)

we need and deserve 4.5 spots

the spot everyone cries for should be a playoff with a team from concacaf/ oceania/ africa & asia IMHO

I never understood how Oceania deserves a spot if the can't evem baeta 5th best team in the COnmebol. That means their trip to the WC is pointless.

its all about the money making, if they include at least one from Oceania, then from that part of the world they will go to the WC.

tomorrow the rulers of conmebol will sort it out in paris.... eugenio Figereido, vice-president, claims to retain the 1/2 spot

the 36 teams may not have legs, but the australian federation was absorbed by the Ministry of sports, and FIFA does not allow governmet involvement in futbol matters. Meaning that oceania will lose direct qualification vs. new zeland or Soma (joke)

the worse case will be a to fight out the 1/2 spot by playing a home/away games vs the runners up from asia and concacaf..... But, they are confident to get the .5 spot lost to blatter.

I don't honestly think that FIFA will make such a radical change to 36 teams simply to appease CONMEBOL. I feel bad about the fact that one of their spots was robbed, but what can you do? I'm sure that they'll get their fifth spot back for the next WC cycle with all the uproar that this situation has created. Remember - just about EVERY World Cup has changed in its format through all of them. Only back in 1994 there were 24 teams instead of today's 32. I have a feeling that FIFA is throwing the Oceana spot their way to see what kind of an impact it will have on developing the market there, but I imagine they'll only give them one free pass and then send that spot back CONMEBOL's way for 2010. Just a feeling - no requests for links, please.

sounds like they will not do 36 teams, what conmebol really cares for is the .5 spot lost to concacaf/asia

and they will get in there with one team, to fight for it. Or from oceania.... but at the end conmebol will have the same 4.5, they have the time to think about it, hopefully a decision in principle tomorrow.

    32 teams for WC2006

and CONMEBOL will play Oceania's best team. So, it won't lose its own .5 spot that had before. But there is compromise that CONMEBOL will not have an additional team when Brasil hosts the Cup.

Guyana and Surinam do have a national team, but they compete in CONCACAF.

I think for the foreseable future it will not matter if or where Guyana and Surinam compete. But they are in South America, so why are they members of CONCACAF?

It is good to see that FIFA gave back the spot to South America. It is a fair ruling. Whoever finishes fifth should beat Australia, and if they don't, then they shouldn't be in the WC anyway.
