Adam Schiff is working on creating a 9/11 style commission on Covid.

Let's hope it gets up and running soon.

It looks as if we will be about flat day over day. But a big jump the previous two days, so over the slightly longer term the trend remains in place. The models suggest getting something north of 2,000 daily at peak.

The Bay Area and Seattle appear to be bright spots in illustrating that containment can be largely successful.

It's kind of amazing that people can believe this is all a media conspiracy at the same time Trump himself is announcing 200K deaths

I haven't believed any of the numbers from California. I wouldn't be at all surprised if other states' numbers are dodgy. Between disjointed ways in which testing is done and "coordinated", the opportunities for deaths to be recorded as having other causes, tgere's a lot of ways (both intentional and accidental) for numbers to get fouled up.

The most important thing is not having a functioning government or sane, capable leadership. The most important thing is pissing off the libs. The second most important thing is sticking a thumb in the eye of experts.

Nope. Still broken. Last update was March 28 at 11:59 PM. I would imagine they are getting the information from other sources.

This has been discussed in germany

If some old guy dies at home or as urgent admission but was not tested for the virus - he does not get counted, unless they do post-mortem testing. But for many places this just has not been a priority

At some later point, academics will comb the data, create models of "expected deaths," measure how far the number of actual deaths differed from the model, and postulate that the extra deaths that were not accounted for with the official coronavirus statistics were likely hidden coronavirus fatalities.

    So much to unpack here.

    1) Dolly Parton is going to save us.
    2) Dolly Parton is longtime friends with Naji Abumrad
    3) Naji Abumrad is Radiolab's Jad Abumrad's father
    4) Radiolab is going to save us, just as I always suspected

Today's second batch of New York numbers came in early, so the national numbers for the day are pretty much done. 1041 deaths, yikes. 505 from New York, 536 from elsewhere.

    Just scary.

Something i have found fascinating being in NZ is observing a govt in English language that is not lying constantly (normally when in Germany I follow events in the UK closely)

In recent days Gove has simply flat out lied to brits about preparations, testing, ventilators etc

I won't say that Jacinda's team don't spin, but they certainly don't just lie about stuff.

You are lucky you are on the right side of the Tasman Sea at the moment. We have a federal Government that has been addicted to not giving out information and although they are starting to realise they need to be a bit more open, most of the info still comes from the announcements of State Leaders. Our Federal Government still refuses to share the modelling that they are using to craft responses and instead are relying on a trust me approach. It is little wonder that people are ignoring the advice and various states have had to introduce firmer measures.

If I may move on to Spanish speaking countries, I can say that Argentina's president, Alberto Fernandez, has done a remarkably good job so far. Frankly, I never liked him, I thought it was cynical of him to run with Christina Kirchner as his VP and basically be seen as her puppet, after having been critical of her in the past. But he's come out of her shadow during this crisis and he has been a strong leader, speaking the truth and taking strong measures. The Argentine people, usually divided and cynical, have responded very well to his measures and his leadership, which is also very surprising.

I think much of it has to do with the fact that the two nations closest to Argentina culturally - Spain and Italy - have been the two most affected countries in the world so far, which brought the crisis vividly to Argentines before things got out of hand there. Most Argentines have loved ones living in either Spain or Italy.

Cases are still increasing, and winter is coming, so we'll see how things play out, but people are staying home and practicing social distancing, and there is a general consensus among Argentines on prioritizing health practices over economic concerns.
